Snuggle Up: 8 Lap Quilts to Warm Your Home [Paperback] Review

Snuggle Up: 8 Lap Quilts to Warm Your Home [Paperback]This is the best quilting book I have bought yet.I have only been quilting for 3 years and these projects are both fun and easy. The instructions are very well written and are great for beginners and others. Each quilt is pictured on a seperate page by itself in great detail.I made the Americana Stars quilt as a gift for my cousin who just returned for the war and it was a great success!I am also in the process of making this quilt with different colors into a king sized bed quilt. The quilts are all throw sized but can easily be modified to make them larger or smaller.I am actually shopping to find other books by these authors.Few books I have found give such good instructions and clear pictures.I would recommend this book to anyone!Happy quilting!

Piecing the Piece O' Cake Way: 15 Skill-Building Projects / 27 Quilts Today's Guide to Quilting Basics Color Choices Made Easy (Piece O'cake) [Paperback] Review

Piecing the Piece O' Cake Way: 15 Skill-Building Projects / 27 Quilts Today's Guide to Quilting Basics Color Choices Made Easy [Paperback]I am a tried and true fan of Piece O Cake designs.I have been quilting for seven years and I have almost all of their books.Although they generally concentrate on applique designs, this book is a very useful guide for piecing. (Piecing is when you sew patches together to make blocks.Applique is when you sew one fabric on top of another, often to make a pictorial design like a flower.-- I hope that makes sense.)
If you don't already have a good general knowledge book on piecing, get this one. They walk you through all of the general techniques quilters should know and in a way that is very easy to understand and is not intimidating.I lent this book to a beginning quilter friend of mine and she read the whole thing and now owns it, too.
If you are interested in applique, the Piece O Cake ladies really know their stuff and have several books covering a wide variety of different applique projects. They have such a positive and engaging teaching style which I have always found encouraging and stimulating.I have completed several of their projects that, if I'd stopped and thought about it for a minute before jumping headlong into them, I might have abandoned because they were beyond what I thought was my skill level. But, these ladies helped me find the confidence in myself to tackle and complete the projects and they break everything down in such a way that you won't feel lost and in over your head.

Aunt Millie's Garden: 12 Flowering Blocks from Piece O' Cake Designs [Paperback] Review

Aunt Millie's Garden: 12 Flowering Blocks from Piece O' Cake Designs [Paperback]I am a huge Piece O' Cake fan, and have purchased just about every book and pattern they have published. I use their book "The New Applique Sampler" when I teach needleturn applique, because it includes fantastic photos and detailed instructions for those learning to applique. I think it is the best technique book out there on needleturn applique.

"Aunt Millie's Garden" is the latest spectacular quilt by Piece O' Cake's Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins. It is twelve symmetrical flower designs (that finish to 14" square) done in bright colors on red backgrounds, with more flower designs in the borders.

This is not a book in the traditional sense. It is an envelope-style sleeve that holds a 16-page booklet with excellent instructions (many from the "New Applique Sampler" book) that describes and shows in photos how to prepare, applique and finish the quilt. There are also six separate pattern sheets (printed on both sides) with full-sized diagrams for each block. A separate sheet has the two border patterns. I really like this presentation, because it allows you to work from the patterns without struggling with a bound book.

Hawaiian Applique [Paperback]This book has everything you need to know to make your first Hawaiian quilt - history, Hawaiian terminology, techniques from start to finish, and gorgeous patterns to choose from. Hawaiian quilts are a unique quilting tradition; appliques based on island nature, cut using a snowflake folding method and generally quilted with radiating "echo" lines. Books on this technique are few and far between, and this one is excellent. Aloha and happy quilting!

Polynesian design and new quilting patterns allow you to go beyond the typical echo quilting. Awed by the beauty of the islands and fascinated by their handwork, Ms. Fleming began making Hawaiian quilts more than 20 years ago. Over a dozen of her original quilt designs are featured, including an extraordinary variety of folded cutwork patterns and quilting designs that reflect a traditional approach to this style of quiltmaking. A brief overview of Hawaiian quilting and a glossary of Hawaiian terms will help you give special meaning to your quilt creation. Celebrate the history, philosophy, and natural beauty of an alluring locale in this exotic collection of patterns.

Quilts for Mantels & More: 11 Delightful Designs [Paperback]While I enjoyed the designs in this book and got many ideas, I found the actual following of putting the quilts together difficult. It seemed that I was jumping back and forth between the actual pattern I was making and the basic instructions in the front of the book.I understand that making it to one's own desired size is difficult to cover but I ended up calculating all of my own setting and corner triangles.

Applique Masterpiece: Little Brown Bird Patterns [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Applique Masterpiece: Little Brown Bird Patterns [Paperback]I found this book to be an absolute delight. The illustrations are exquisite and Margaret Doherty's conversational style is easy to read and understand. I learned a lot of new techniques, for instance, using parts of a large scale fabric to piece a very small bird. In one instance, she used a cobblestone fabric for the birds breast.
I am interested in developing small projects and feel that any one of the 40 squares would make a masterpiece item.
A quote from the author's preface: "I work as a pediatrician and each night after dinner, I do a crossword puzzle and sew for about six hours." sums up the author'sapproach to this form of fabric work. The challenge in looking at fabrics, colors, and techniques in a new way is worth the price of the book.

Kaffe Fassetts Caravan of Quilts (Patchwork & Quilting Book 6) [Paperback] Review

Kaffe Fassetts Caravan of Quilts [Paperback]In my experience in using this book, I have never been unhappy with anything that I have quilted. But the this book takes the cake in being disgraceful. I'm talking about the big bang quilt on page 49.None of the directions are checked. The list of what you have to buy to make one of these is wrong and the author has you cutting pieces that you don't need or use in the quilt. I have never been so involved in a quilt before but now that I know that one set of direction is faulty. I should have known. Buyer beware. Quilter beware. I'm usually a great fan of Fasserr's fabric and patterns but this time I'm very disappointed in him.

Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad [Paperback] Review

Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad [Paperback]I agree with most of the reviews of this book that the material is indeed fascinating. It just doesn't happen to be true.Sadly, the "quilt code" myth has been invented by a couple of vendors who sell quilts, and now also sell books, speaking engagements, memorabilia, etc.
This isn't the place for a "debunking", however. If you're interested in seriously evaluating the facts of the issue, and comparing this book's unfounded (indeed unique) claims against real scholarship on the Underground Railroad and the history of quilting, a good place to start is the research of Leigh Fellner, which appears in the March 2003 issue of Traditional Quiltworks magazine as well as the Hart Cottage Quilts website.

Star Quilts II: More of the Legendary Kansas City Star's Quilt Patterns [Paperback] Review

Star Quilts II: More of the Legendary Kansas City Star's Quilt Patterns [Paperback]this is apparently the second quilting book with patterns from the kansas city star newspaper archives of the 30s-40s.

now, in my opinion, just because a pattern was printed in the 30s does not necessarily make it a '30s' pattern--after all, a log cabin or lone star pattern printed in a magazine today is not a 21st century pattern. these basic patterns date to the 19th century. many of the pieced patterns in this book also date to the 19th or very early 20th century, but were printed in the k.c. star in the 30s. happily for me, there are several pieced patterns that have the flavor of the 30s, whether variations on tradition or originals.

the reason i am keeping this book in my too large quilting library is because, in addition to pieced patterns, there are twenty fabulous applique patterns from 1930 which are completely 30s in design.

there are some very nice aspects to the presentation of the patterns: a setting is shown both straight and on point (i first thought this was unnecessary, until i realized how convenient it is to see both side by side), there is a section showing various combinations of the pieced patterns, and there is a color picture of a newly sewn block and sometimes a complete quilt to illustrate the individual pattern.

unfortunately, the updated cutting instructions too often substitute half-square triangles for square-in-square patterns. i don't understand why contemporary quilters are considered less competent than those in the 30s.

there is a section of quilting patterns from the 30s included, and some are wonderful, but all are good. there is a two page section on making a quilt. good luck to absolute beginners!

each pattern is also paired with a short article or advertisement from the day it was originally published. these were very interesting, too.

so, taken all in all, there is a lot of value in this book. i gave it four stars only because of the inclusion of so many traditional patterns that can be found anywhere.

There are some clever ideas and some where you will think, "Are they kidding?"The rooms are gorgeous, but frankly, my children would have reduced them to rubble in a few short weeks. Many of the ideas are adaptable to guest rooms or for incorporation into more practical environments. Some ideas are silly, but then we expect a certain amount of that from decorators and prefer to dream about that life where we might actually live in rooms like these.

Quilting Illusions: Create over 40 eye-fooler quilts [Hardcover] Review

Quilting Illusions: Create over 40 eye-fooler quilts [Hardcover]I give this book only three stars because the title & cover illustration give you high expectations about what is going to be inside the book and once you open the book you might find yourself disappointed. This book does contain some optical illusion quilts but most of the examples are not particularly remarkable or interesting. They are for the most part, the same type of quilt blocks that you can find in your typical, genericbook of quilt blocks.
This book does have some good points, though. It has many fine and detailed illustrations about how to make a quilt. It would be a great guide for a beginning quilter. However, if you are an experienced peruser of quilt books and/or maker of quilts you will probably not find this book to be terribly exciting.

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc! [Paperback] Review

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc [Paperback]This book has hundreds of design possibilities, all shown in grayscale diagrams. There are photographs of some of them made up, but for most of them you'll have to do your own color choices and placement. These blocks could be made up into bed-sized quilts, starting with large squares as building blocks, or into blocks to go into a quilt, or as a single smaller block as a wallhanging or other small quilt project. This is not for someone who needs handholding and precise step-by-step directions. But if you're confident in your own taste and able to make decisions for yourself as you go along, and can look at a block diagram and see how it should be sewn together, this offers you lots of options. All the blocks are made from simple units -- squares, four patches, "rail fence" units (two rectangles), and half-square triangles. The author gives you lots of possible ways to combine those units into quilt blocks of any size you choose, determined only by the size of square you start with. This is a book I'll return to again and again.

Product Description:

The latest trend in fabric is precut squares or rectangles. Layer Cakes from Moda are 10 inch squares. Sweet 16s from Maywood Studios are 9 inch x 11 inch rectangles. Marcus Brothers cuts their Spoonfuls into 8-1/2 inch squares. This book contains ideas for all these large squares. Or you can cut you own large squares. One Fat Quarter can be cut into four 8-1/2 inch squares. Making the designs even more flexible, these patterns will work for ANY SIZE SQUARE! The popular 5 inch charm packs will make a fun baby quilt size or table topper. Or maybe you have cut leftover fabrics from past projects into 4 inch or 6 inch squares (or any other uniform size). These patterns will work perfectly for those squares as well! You could even start with a 16 inch or 17 inch square and use one of these patterns to make a king size quilt. It just takes 36 squares of any size to make any or all of these quilts. This book contains instructions to make 238 quilts! All of the instructions are written for beginners. This book offers beginning quilters several benefits. The quilts are all made up of basic blocks. The fabric in the precut, prepackaged fabric bundles all match. The book describes several methods for organizing scrap quilts. Beginning quilters are introduced to the creative process of quilting. However, these quilts are not just for beginners. Experienced quilters can enjoy making a quick project as a gift or to experiment with new colors. This book takes quilters through four steps of basic quiltmaking. Step 1: Choose Your Pattern. Step 2: Organize Your Fabrics. Step 3: Sew Your Blocks Together. Step 4: Layout and Sew Your Quilt. Going through these steps involves quilters with the entire process of quilt making in a fun, simple way.Big Block Quilts contains patterns for 238 quilts with full color pictures of 21 of these patterns. See how similar patterns look in different colors, and see how the same fabrics look in different patterns. This book contains hundreds of ideas for using charm packs, layer cakes, sweet 16s, spoonfuls, fat quarters, and your personal stash!

Aurora: An American Experience in Quilt, Community, and Craft [Bargain Price] [Hardcover] Review

Aurora: An American Experience in Quilt, Community, and Craft [Hardcover]The quilts tell this story...
Author Jane Kirkpatrick wrote two series of books taking place in the Willamette Valley of Oregon during the 1800s.Aurora, a German Christian commune, existed at that time. The members worked together using their skills to survive.

Aurora:An American Experience in Quilt, community, and Craft is a celebration of their lives and the artifacts they left behind. The skills and talent varied from quilts to furniture to numerous other items. This book is filled with photographs.I was particular impressed with the quilts, for each one tells a story. One of the quilts that caught my eye is a piece-appliquéd quilt. The background is brown and black with colorful appliquéd birds. This quilt seems to break the barriers that prevent friendships.

The hand-stitched samplers are beautiful.Needlework is quickly becoming a lost art.Few people in today's world have the time or take the time to put needle and thread to fabric.Aurora:An American Experience in Quilt, community, and Craft is a book to be cherished. It is gift quality.

Le Rouvray (International Quilt Shop Series) [Paperback] Review

Le Rouvray [Paperback]The "content" of the book was wonderful, but the patterns were not quite my thing.A couple were contemporary, most were very traditional. Also, this book comes in a French and an English version -- beware the French as all the measurements are metric. I still highly recommend, the photos are lovely and the contributions from the various French quilters are terrific. I just visited this store in Paris, Le Rouvray, and it's delightful. If you can't actually visit the store in France, this book gives a wonderful peek at French quilts and quilters.

Although I have always liked the cathedral windows pattern, I have always resisted making one due to the tremendous amount of hand sewing. This book allowsyou to create a beautiful quilt using machine techniques. The instructionsare brief, to-the-point and clear. The illustrations appear to behand-drawn, but they serve to explain the process and do not detract fromthe text. The net result is a beautiful old-style quilt streamlined forthose of us who do not have the time to create it all by hand. My nextfull-sized project will be a cathedral window quilt.
