Early American Patchwork Patterns: Full-Size Templates and Instructions for 12 Quilts (Dover Needlework) [Paperback] Review

Early American Patchwork Patterns: Full-Size Templates and Instructions for 12 Quilts [Paperback]I would not call myself a avid quilter, but I am a pretty good one. One of the books I started out with was this one.
In the introduction one will find a crash course in beginning the quilt, types of materials to use, fabric cutting, sewing, setting, blocking and finishing the quilt, as well as preparation of the top, quilting and binding.
The things I liked were the full size templates, color charts, and easy to follow directions. Not to mention it precisely telling you how much of each fabric is needed.
This book is simple enough for the beginner, yet challenging enough for the avid quilter. I'd recommend it without any qualms.

Free-Style Quilts: A "No Rules" Approach [Paperback] Review

Free-Style Quilts: A 'No Rules' Approach [Paperback]I bought this book after I'd already started a pictorial quilt using techniques I learned about in Focus on Features by Charlotte Warr Andersen (highly recommended, too!). The quilt was coming along nicely and I was glad to see that a couple of techniques I'd worked out for myself are also used by the Author. The coolest thing about this book is its ability to inspire you to loosen up and just try things. I was struggling with the sky portion of my quilt, and following the author's advice, just started free-cutting pieces and layering them. It came together very quickly and I am happy with the results. A fascinating thing about Susan's quilts is this: they LOOK really complicated, but if you examine them very closely, you'll see that they are not. Her choices of fabric and quilting are the key to realistic portrayals and lively artistic qualities. I did find myself wondering how many layers of fabric there were in some areas of her Elements quilt.
This is definitely a book that needs to be on your shelf if you enjoy pictorial quilts! I agree with other reviewers on this, though: techniques are not covered in much depth. That's okay...because in my opinion it encourages people to gravitate toward whatever technique works best for them, whether it's needle turn applique, fusible web applique, complicated piecing, etc. The whole point is to be creative and not get stuck working within the confines of another quilter's approach.

Stack a New Deck: More Great Quilts in 4 Easy Steps [Paperback] Review

Stack a New Deck: More Great Quilts in 4 Easy Steps [Paperback]I like this book SO MUCH more than the original Stack the Deck. The variety in this book is great, and the concept is easy to follow. Plus, the quilts look GREAT. My hand-dyed fabrics really shine in these quilts, and I can showcase special pieces with ease. The Red Onion quilt is my favorite, although I was really attracted to the floral squares one, as well. My only issue with the book is that the borders shown are fairly plain-jane - some different examples would be nice. But hey - if that's the only thing wrong, I can find borders (or create some) for myself!

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps [Paperback]What to do with the scraps from other quilts! That is always a question in a quilter's mind.BITS AND PIECES helps solve that problem. While the book is about making small quilts in the size range of 20" square, there is no reason you couldn't make several of the small quilts, put them together and make a bed sized one!A bit of sashing between each "quilt" and you have a large quilt instead. For example, in One Patch Garden, there are lots of colorful square with a border. So just make more squares from your leftovers and you have the bed quilt

Each pattern, of which there are 17, begins with a bit of information about the quilt. Then the size of the finished project is listed and a materials list is given. Cutting instructions come next followed by how to assemble the top and finishing directions. There are plenty of graphics to help you visualize what the instructions are telling you to do.And lots of tips are found in special boxes through out.

Your quilts will most likely not match the ones in the photos as your scraps are sure to be different than the author's.The quilts are divided into four types, those using squares and rectangles, those using triangles, those using diamonds and those using curves and circles with easy appliqué.This makes the book one in which everyone will find a project to their liking.

Quiltmaking by Hand: Simple Stitches, Exquisite Quilts [Paperback] Review

Quiltmaking by Hand: Simple Stitches, Exquisite Quilts [Paperback]I am truly inspired by this book. I made my first couple of quilts by hand, but I didn't feel that I was a "real" quilter until I had bought the sewing machine. All the books and magazines seemed to be completely geared up to machime piecing and so I felt that hand piecing was seen as quaint and outdated. So it was a revalation to find out that Jinny Beyer, a reknown quilter and teacher whose quilts I had always admired, made them ALL by hand! Her explanation of how quilts can be advanced piece by piece in "found" moments has made me think that perhaps handpiecing is THE way to quilt for busy women today.
Her directions and detailed photographs make it easy for anyone who has never picked up needle and thread and her enthusiasm, on every page of the book, will build your confidence. Also, the photographs of her lovely silver needlework accessories and the insets about quilting history add to the inspiration.
If you think you haven't got time to hand piece, read this and think again.

Quilts Through the Seasons: A Quilt for Each Month of the Year (Quilt in a Day) (Quilt in a Day Series) [Spiral-bound] Review

Quilts Through the Seasons: A Quilt for Each Month of the Year [Spiral-bound]This is going to be one of my favorites from our friendly laid-back quilting instructor. If you've been longing for something a bit more meaty and advanced from Eleanor, this is the book for you.She will show you how to make things look more advanced than they really are by implementing her clever techniques.

Although I have always learned something new from her prior books (in her elegantly simple manner), I found the older patterns to be too elemental and chunky. There were not enough color changes or pattern varieties, and the blocks always seemed too large and too few; everything had that "very first quilt" look to it. Hence I shied away from her most recent publications and even sold or gave away a few of the old ones.

THIS book, however, is a very pleasant surprise. There are 13 designs, presented in order of the four seasons. You will find blocks based on crazy hearts, "log cabin" pine trees with appliqued cardinals, stars intermingled with 4-patch blocks, fish, flower baskets, and a Twin Sisters block based on a pattern from 1845.I'll save the rest so you can be (pleasantly) surprised!!

In typical fashion, Eleanor uses a range of simple-to-clever techniques: foundations, embellishments, folded borders, curved seams, fusible applique, equilateral finished triangles, and fussy cutting. She also includes her clever method for Flying Geese/Star Points which guarantees a perfect piece, and her fusible applique technique replaces the usual paper-piecing to create a fabulous Lady Liberty circular crown block.

As I mentioned earlier, Eleanor breaks away from her usual huge/chunky block size; most of the blocks are under 9 inches with one as small as 5 inches. She just had to include a block that measures 17 by 22 inches (in a cute fish pattern), but I'll allow her that!

As in her prior books, most projects feature her own fabric lines, but there is a wee bit less emphasis on floral here. And some projects are shown done up in batiks and tone-on-tones, demonstrating how you can personally tailor her simple patterns to your own fabric preferences.Directions are provided for a variety of quilt-top sizes, plus table runners and pillow cases.

Just a few less than positive things to note:The very first design is for a crazy Valentine, and she instructs you to use foundation piecing!!To me, it seems somewhat oxymoronic to call this "crazy" when the exact same foundation is used for every block. When I make this one, I will skip the paper-piecing and do it up in true "crazy quilt" fashion. Also, the publication is in a spiral ring binder; great idea but bad execution for clutzes like me.Once you have spiraled the front or back cover it never seems to go back into place correctly without you having to re-leaf all the pages.Small thing, but a possible minor pain for folks with MS or arthritis. And you will probably find yourself buying yet another rotary ruler (don't we have enough??!!) to take the best advantage of her technique. Finally, I would love to have seen the publisher put a photo of each project on the table of contents page.I've seen this done before and it really saves you from constantly flipping through the pages to find that one design you thought you saw but can't remember where. This would have been especially helpful given that there are 13 different projects here.

Now, so that I can leave on a positive note, let me end by saying there truely is something here for every one, regardless of you preference for fabrics, pattern styles, or block sizes. If you want to add a publication that is sure to become a classic, this is the one to buy!

Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts [Paperback]with lots of applications.

there are a lot of examples of kay nichols' one fabric quilts that show the possiblities of her technique, but, of course, the idea can be used in quilts with more than one fabric.

she shows how clever piecing can expand the use of all those gorqeous border stripe fabrics. the results are surprising and beautiful. some very precise quilters might not be completely satisfied with the way patterns can meet at the miters without more planning than the author suggests, but this technique can result in a very lovely, reasonably easy quilt.

the quilts in the book range from the romantic to the funky. the photographs and digrams are very clear. the instructions are clear and detailed, though i wouldn't suggest this for a beginner. some experience with piecing is necessary. only general suggestions for quilting and binding the finished top are given, which is fine with me, as this is a book on piecing technique. more information on finishing a quilt is available in many other books.

this book definitely belongs in a quilter's library--not just for the one fabric quilts presented, but as an inspiration to try the technique on other types of prints and include it in multi-fabric quilts.

When I asked about it I was told there was no pattern, it was an original design based on this book. And the quilter is 15!That gives me hope.My only tiny complaint is there isn't a good explanation on how to determine before you start cutting what the colors of the finished background will look like. This is likely more a failing on my part than the author's, as I'm not particularly good with color. I recommend this book to anyone looking for something different and creative. The author is truly an artist, and just looking through the pictures of her quilts make your fingers itch to start creating!

Machine Quilting with Alex Anderson: 7 Exercises, Projects & Full-Size Quilting Patterns [Paperback] Review

Machine Quilting with Alex Anderson: 7 Exercises, Projects & Full-Size Quilting Patterns [Paperback]I loved this book. It was simple to read and apply the directions. I am a machine quilter and much of what was offered I was already familiar with, but my familiarity was gained through much trial and error. I would have saved myself a lot of time to have this book at the start of my efforts in machine quilting. The photos are very clear, the projects are way simple and I learned some new tricks, such as the way to make a "light" table by stretching a piece of Plexiglass over two chairs with a light underneath. I especially like how Alex freely admitted that she was afraid of machine quilting but finally just did it. So many quilters I know are in her old shoes! Thank you, Alex!

Quilt This Practical Patterns for Everyday Quilting [Paperback] Review

Quilt This Practical Patterns for Everyday Quilting [Paperback]So I've been machine quilting for 16 years now.Back in 'the day' you were told NEVER CROSS YOUR STITCHING.Whew, that rule is now bashed plenty!
This is a very lovely pattern book. This is NOT A HOW TO book.
It is divided into Gardens & Woods, Swirls & Curls, Motifs & Other Stuff, and Children & Playtime.

You can either take your inspiration from the designs and free quilt your own interpretations of the ones you see.Take them apart, combine them, enlarge, reduce to fit your quilts.I think it wouldn't be very hard at all to use with a longarm to make up your own combinations to follow with your laser light as well.

I was looking for more unique filling ideas and this book meets my needs.

Photo-Inspired Art Quilts: From Composition to Finished Piece [Paperback] Review

Photo-Inspired Art Quilts: From Composition to Finished Piece [Paperback]I have been looking, searching and buying all sorts of books on the topic of creative "photos-to-art-quilts", this one hits the high "HIGH" mark on inspiration, clear and thorough directions. The author does a great job in walking the reader through the basics of good design, composition, photo selections and getting your ideas actually done! The included companion DVD is fantastic as it was so much better yet to actaully see and hear how the author achieved such fantastic results! The demonstrations of thread-painted accents and applique really cleared up some questions I had while reading the book.A lot of design and planning is done with the use of a computer which is explained in easy to understand details but the author has also offered simple and clear directions for what some might call "low-tech" alternatives. All the steps of making a "photo-inspired" art quilt are covered in very clear writing and step by step photos. I do both traditional quilts and art quilts, if I could give it 6 stars ****** I would!

Quilts from the Selvage Edge [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Quilts from the Selvage Edge [Paperback]This book is worth every penny! The quilts are amazing and they are easy to make. There is a Log Cabin, a Tree-of-Life, Tumbling Blocks, a Pineapple, a Basket Weave, and a Star quilt. Thirteen in all. They look complicated but really aren't! The instructions are clear and simple. You can easily see how these quilts go together just by looking at the step-by-step pictures.

I bought this book a week ago and I finished my first selvage quilt already, a Log Cabin. It came out really well and inspired me to create my own design. What I really like about this book is that you can quickly learn enough to create your own designs. Also, I was glad to see the photo of a selvage quilt after machine washing and drying. It looked fine. So I'm hooked! This is so much fun.

The Foreword by Mark Lipinski (Quilter's Home magazine) is hilarious!

"Quilts from the Selvage Edge" is beautifully done and full of inspiration. Definitely one of my favorites, a 5-star quilting book!

Mystery Quilts [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Mystery Quilts [Paperback]We at Checker are fortunate to call Rita a friend -and after you read her book, you will see why. That's right - I said "read" - because her personality shines through on each and every page! Not only does she share patterns for over a dozen quilts, she also provides recipes, sewing tips and personal anecdotes. So, grab a cup of coffee and prepare to be entertained.

In our neck of the woods, her mystery quilt classes have become legendary. For each event, she designs a quilt simple enough for a beginner, kits and cuts the fabrics, and provides food, fun and wenches - assistants who press, encourage, and rip out seams if necessary. Her goal is to create successful first time quilters - but they return again and again to socialize, share, and finish a quilt top in an afternoon.

Now, she has written the instructions for 15 of these quilts so that you can host your own event. You don't have to own a shop - just get together with a group of friends and have some fun.

Or, sew solo - this is the perfect set of patterns for those times when you need to make a quilt fast! We all tend to procrastinate, don't we!

A MUST HAVE for every machine quilter. At last, a detailed road map to skilled machine quilting, written by one of the top quilters in the field. Distinguished quilter Diane Gaudynski serves up a practical new approach to quilting by machine. Based on her popular machine quilting series in American Quilter magazine, this book gives readers the ins and outs of creating a design that instantly improves accuracy and fluidity of line. This international prize-winning quilter, author, lecturer, and teacher debunks six common myths about machine quilting. Holding nothing back, Diane includes techniques for several charming unmarked free-hand, free-motion designs, such as 'headbands,' 'bananas,' 'Dianeshiko,' spirals, leaves, fronds, and clamshells. Quilters will especially enjoy the author's detailed description of echo quilting and echo-quilted feathers. Diane states her goal is to add to the quilter's knowledge of machine-quilting skills and solve some common problems. She says, 'Dispelling some myths, learning some simple aids and techniques, and tackling the job in an organized and informed way will allow you to master this most basic of machine tasks.'

Colorwash Bargello Quilts [Paperback] Review

Colorwash Bargello Quilts [Paperback]When I first received the book, I thought, there is absolutely "no way" I can do this. I had never done any strip peacing work before. But, this book took me step by step through the strip peacing, Bargello process. Beth's thoughts and words about color and value are more thorough than anything I learned in college art classes. One could use the book for color theory alone. Beth's approach to Bargello is almost a "trust me" theory. I honestly did have my doubts but I followed her explicit instructions faithfully and my "Star Kindler" top is nearly complete. And it is fabulous beyond anything I could have hoped for or imagined.

Baby's First Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Baby's First Quilts [Paperback]Like all good quilting books, this one starts out with a section on choosing fabric and how to personalize your quilt.Tools needed and quilting basics are the next sections and cover such things as rulers, matching seams and chain piecing. In the Finishing Techniques section, there is a very good idea on how to make a light table with things you already have in your home just in case you don't own one.

A baker's dozen of quilt patterns are written in language that is easy to understand and has plenty of graphics of the steps so you can see if you are reading the written words correctly. There is a list of the materials needed and how to cut the fabric. There is also a photo of the finished quilt with the finished quilt size and finished block size being listed.A small paragraph about the quilt is also given.Making the blocks, assembling the quilt and finishing suggestions complete the patterns instructions.

Ms. Martin has chosen fun fabrics for the shown quilts such as blocks with alphabet letters or piggies playing. There are also quilts with retro fabric and even ones that use up all those left over bits and pieces.

The last page has a photo of the author along with two paragraphs about her.

Blended Borders: Quilts With a Creative Edge (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Blended Borders: Quilts With a Creative Edge [Paperback]I'm sorry, but this book is worthless and indicative of some of the junk that is being published as everyone wants to jump on the billion $ quilt industry band wagon. I consider myself an intermediate quilter and buy numerous quilting books because I love getting inspired by new ideas and techniques. The quilt on the cover is misleading regarding this book. In reality, the quilts are not inspiring, in fact they are quite homely. There is nothing new in the way of techniques.I paid $14 and wish I hadn't paid $1. I wish I had read the couple of comments that dind't rate it a 5!

Simple Strategies for Scrap Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Simple Strategies for Scrap Quilts [Paperback]I've been a quilter for a long time, and I have the fabric collection to prove it. This book offers hope that I will be able to transform my stash into beautiful quilts, not random ones that don't really work. I liked the fact that there is just enough color theory to get me started, but not so much that I feel I need an art degree to understand it.The quilts shown are true examples and are tied to the lessons. Incidental tips, such as basting with binder clips and sewing a striped border, are worth the price of the book. My favorite line - "Everyone knows that stash quilts are free."

Instructions for each quilt are very clear and easy to follow. The book even suggests which way to iron each and every seam!!

A Joy Forever: Marie Webster's Quilt Patterns [Paperback]I cannot wait to start making a quilt using the designs in this book!If you've seen a quilt with roses, irises, daisies...before and weren't impressed, try this book for designs that are fresh and clean.According to this book, a lot of the designs of the 1920's-1950's were based off of these.I have not seen these patterns used in this way ever before. In this book you will find patterns for many flowers including: iris (pictured on the cover), daisy, may tulips, poppy, white dogwood (fabulous!), french baskets, and a very beautiful grapes and vines pattern.
If you've never appliqued before, this book will be a challenge to you.The instructions are written for a quilter with some experience. The beginning of the book gives wonderful details of the life of Marie Webster who is the original creator of these designs.
I also enjoyed Marie Webster's Gardent of Quilts which, I think would be a bit easier for a beginner eager to try traditional designs.
