Japanese Country Quilting: Sashiko Patterns and Projects for Beginners [Paperback] Review

Japanese Country Quilting: Sashiko Patterns and Projects for Beginners [Paperback]Traditional Japanese country clothes were quilted for warmth. The quilting patterns on the natural indigo dyed hemp or cotton are called sashiko and often take the form of repeating, geometric patterns.
Karen Matsunaga gives a nice background into the daily life of her Japanese family, and also the history of some of the traditional patterns.
The book has five complete projects, plus sashiko stitching pattern. The patterns are printed on grids, with helpful directional lines to show the direction in which the stitching should take place. Recommended for anyone starting out in sashiko quilting

Deck the Halls: Quilts to Celebrate Christmas (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Deck the Halls: Quilts to Celebrate Christmas [Paperback]This is a beautiful volume that includes a variety of festive holiday projects. Besides gorgeous wall quilts to celebrate the season, there's a door banner to welcome your holiday guests, a mantel runner to decorate your hearth, toppers and runners to make your table extra special, and an elegant quilted stocking for Santa to fill.

Most of the patterns include appliqué, because as Cheryl put it, "I love the shapes and the graceful curves you can create, as well as the flexibility the technique provides." Of course you can use your favorite form of appliqué, but Cheryl gives you full illustrated instructions for the fusible-web machine method, and has even reversed the patterns for you. That's a real convenience.

Very comprehensive, the book includes a whole section of basic information about fabrics, threads, sewing machines, needles, tools, etc. That's before you even get to the Quiltmaking Basics: rotary cutting, fusible web appliqué, pre-assembly, bias vines, and even paper piecing!

Rolling Along: Easy Quilts from 2 1/2" Strips : Jelly Roll Friendly [Paperback] Review

Rolling Along: Easy Quilts from 2 1/2' Strips : Jelly Roll Friendly [Paperback]This book has a number of good designs, but I think it's misleading to call it Jelly Roll friendly.Very few of the designs would make efficient use of the number of strips contained in a Jelly Roll -- you'd either need more strips, or additional fabric (FQs or something) or you'll end up with strips left over.A much better book, with designs which use the Jelly Rolls more efficiently, is Jelly Roll Quilts by the Lintotts, mother and daughter.I can't remember the mother's first name, but the daughter's is Nicky. It's available here on Amazon.

A Dozen Roses: Beautiful Quilts and Pillows (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

A Dozen Roses: Beautiful Quilts and Pillows [Paperback]This book is so lovely and it contains a wide variety of quilting and sewing projects for people of all ability levels. The photography is beautiful and the instructions for each project are very detailed and precise.

One great thing about this book is that there is a wide range of projects for everyone. Some of the projects are traditional (such as the Bed of Roses Baby Quilt) and others are more modern and funky (such as the Roses and Ribbons Strips Pillow). There are projects that could take several months to finish and others that could be completed in a matter of an hour or two.

The authors also explain the inspiration behind their projects and give interesting background information. For example, the Rose of Havana Quilt was inspired by Azulejo tiles from the Moorish period in Spanish history. There are also many interesting legends relating to roses scattered throughout the book.

I love this book and enjoy flipping through it to look at the gorgeous projects.I think my first project will be the Rose Petal pillow to add a romantic touch to my bed.

Super Quick Colorful Quilts [Paperback] Review

Super Quick Colorful Quilts [Paperback]I just picked this book up in a remainder and it was definitely worth the money.I have not yet made anything out of it.But I will.(Only 4 stars because I haven't tried to make anything).I look for quilt patterns that are effective but fast as I have limited time.If you are looking for complexity or a quilting challenge, this probably isn't the book for you.

A similar style to Wilkinson's "Quick and Easy Patchwork and Applique : 14 Lively Designs Using All Kinds of Applied Motifs" - patterns are a similar nature but not repeated (which is nice). When I picked up the book it didn't occur to me that I already own a book by her, but as I adore "Quick and Easy Patchwork and Applique" I can see why this one appealed to me.

Note Wilkinson edits this book (as well as "Quick and Easy Patchwork and Applique").The quilts are designed by a variety of UK quilters, designers, authors and teachers.

This book is split into four sections - Tips and Techniques, "Bright Colours", "Pastel Colours" and "Primary Colours".A bit of a furfy though as, once again, Wilkinson includes 4 alternative colour schemes for each quilt.A brilliant idea as it really gives you an understanding of how colour combinations affect the overall makeup of the quilt.

The tips and techniques appear quite thorough and good enough for a beginner. There are tips also throughout the patterns.

My biggest problem when choosing a book online is the inability to actually flip through the book to see if there really is anything I want to make.So I shall attempt to provide some descriptions of the quilts that particularly appeal to me...
- Candy Bars - "Hot pink fabric frames the colourful bars in this topper for a single bed. Very simple blocks are joined together in rows to make the bars, reminiscent of the most colourful jars in the sweet shop. Simple quilting completes the project, which took just twelve hours to make." - The prime example uses "at least nine" different pink, orange and mauve patterned fabrics that are then combined two to a square, sewn into horizontal bars. These bars are separated by hot pink strips. The quilt is finished with a wave or scalloped machine stitch across the quilt providing a modern feel. The alternative colour schemes include a denim variation "for a teenager".
- Whirligig Quilt - A windmill square using bright, modern colours, tied in the centres.
- Dotty Cot Quilt - A mix of soft pastels - blue, pink, green, yellow - to suit either boy or girl, finished size is 86x70 cm.Fabric is dots and plains arranged into 4 x 5 squares.Every other square is a single fabric with an appliqued circle. In between each is a large square with a small centre square in contrasting colour, tied in the centre.
- Sherbet Twist - "Mouth-watering colours, a broderie anglaise frill and a scattering of mother-of-pearl buttons make this lap quilt the perfect treat for a sweet little girl."Three strips of each contrasting pastel pair (yellow with purple, green and pink, blue and orange) is arranged length wise down the quilt, separated by single strips of white fabric. The colour bands are quilted down the length (like "tubes" with a puffy eiderdown effect) but the white is tied with buttons down the length.A lace border surrounds.Alternative colour schemes include patterns and florals.
- Chenille Hearts - "The chenille technique, also known as "slashing", is a great way to use up all those ugly fabrics from your stash - when they're used for the lower layers, they don't show but add to the felted edges when cut and washed. This technique makes quite a heavy quilt as it's made up of four layers but it is very soft and cozy."Finishe size is 96.5 x 85.5 cm.Basically it is a purple quilt with 12 hearts from three colours (green, yellow, pink) arranged symmetrically across the top. However, it is made from three top layers of fabric (purple and pink) over one background piece (purple). The layers + hearts are then sewn (quilted) in parallel diagonals every .75 cm.The top three layers + hearts are then "slashed" or cut between the stitching (so it is cut on the bias).Once washed, you are left with a soft, felted quilt.

Designed for beginners and those with little time, the quilts use just three shapes--the square, the rectangle, and the triangle. Yet, they involve a wide variety of designs, made all the more graphic by clever fabric suggestions.

Amish Wall Quilts: 15 Brilliant and Beautiful Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Amish Wall Quilts: 15 Brilliant and Beautiful Quilts [Paperback]Rachel Pellman is a Mennonite dealer in amish quilts and she gives a very dutiful account of the Amish lifestyle as a n introduction. She then goes into the quilts breaking them up into geographic location and laying out the colour, piecework patterns and then quilting motifs for you to make an authentic Amish legacy wall-hanging quillt.
I have another one of Pellman's books and the big difference here is one of course the size, most are 47x47 inches and two the use of colour. Most of Pellman's books are black and white but this one is in full colour which is rather funny because once you see these quilts in colour you realise why the cheaper black and white can be used. But still seeing the colour spectrum as the Amish use it is very helpful and cannot be discounted. It's a good reference there just on the colour motifs and how to build or identify an Authentic Amish quilt (Center diamond should be in what colours and what quilting style for example).
Because everything is in the authentic mode, Pellman does not mention anything about machine piecing or quilting, but then you should have Hargreave's book, the definitive source, so you'll never have to care. The instructions are fine, I used them to make 2 quilts, but in the end it's rather plain being Amish all the time (remember no patterns :-).
Still it seems to be comprehensive and answer all of your questions except that I think it should have had some of the quilts as samples so we could see how the various pieces do fit together and look. It's a workmanlike book, not very inspired.

Visual Coloring: A Foolproof Approach to Color-Rich Quilts [Paperback] Review

Visual Coloring: A Foolproof Approach to Color-Rich Quilts [Paperback]This is well produced book with lots of colour photos illustrating Joen's excellent colour sense. It is rather limited in scope, however.
After the introductory chapters on the usual analyses of good design features (fairly brief), the rest of the book illustrates basically one point. That is, you can analyse all the range of colour and value in a source photo to produce a quilt that resonates with the same colours and balance of contrast. Some of the quilts are stunning, particularly one of a bull, using mainly browns. It was seeing that in the 'excerpt'on amazon, that made me buy the book.

It's a Stitch: 21 Patchwork Quilt Projects with an Eye on Tradition [Paperback] Review

It's a Stitch: 21 Patchwork Quilt Projects with an Eye on Tradition [Paperback]It's a stitch

21 Fresh and vibrant, occasionally odd and exciting quilt projects, perfectly presented instructions and a light hearted tone.

While all the quilts have at lease some connection with traditional patterns, they have been reworked in quirky ways, and much effor invested in each.

An excellent beginners bork, because of the concise and easy to follow instructions - the whole book is a joy to read, terribly easy to flick through and delightful to follow. Well worth the modest price.

The authors amuse & educate with many pages of quilters tips, obviously concocted by true quilting enthusiasts.

With a humorous '12 step program for Stash Reduction'& 'gifts for a quilter', dinner suggestions (`Quick Suppers'), `A Quilting We Will Go' (where to vacation to inspire your next quilt), (Quilting) `Classroom Etiquette', `Organizing a Raffle Quilt', and many other delicious and entertaining tips I confess I found these inserts -which are layered through the book like chapters- just as pleasing as the quilts showcased.

The quilts themselves are not to be sniffed at of course, whilst not all were great favorites with me, there was enough to satisfy.

I found the quilt makers had done interesting things in terms of fabric selection, and improving upon old designs. There is a special Wedding Ring quilt which has been appliquéd with origami roses and vines - beautiful! (if you look close, this is featured on the cover in the upper right corner)

A little snippet from the end of the book:

Sports for Quilters:

RUNNING to the quilt shop
HURDLING over piles of books
LIFTING large quantities of fabric
RACING to finish a project deadline
SWIMMING through pages of quilt magazines
KICKING around new ideas
SPINNING new yarns about quilting adventures
CYCLING through decades of quilting designs.
There you have it. Scrap the gym and start scraping!

A true quilting addict's (dare I say nerd's?) manual - Great.

Double Wedding Ring Quilts: Coming Full Circle [Paperback] Review

Double Wedding Ring Quilts: Coming Full Circle [Paperback]I only received the book yesterday, therefore I have not yet tried any of the instructions yet,but leafing through it makes me itch to start a quilt of my own. There are several wallhanging size projects to choose from: the rings as background for an applique, as a graphic art statement, with raw edge applique, combined with rubberstamping and so on. The quilts use up to date fabrics and technics and are great visual stimuli. There are pattern pieces for a 15" ring included and the instructions seem to be detailed enough for someone with basic knowledge of quiltmaking to follow.
I am looking forward to trying the ideas in this book.

Doubledipity: More Serendipity Quilts [Paperback] Review

Doubledipity: More Serendipity Quilts [Paperback]this title was in my recommendations list, and, while i thought the cover quilt was very interesting, i hesitated to buy it, even with good reviews. however, a fellow quilter raved about it, so i took a chance.

i'm glad i did--the technique is simple, the variations are endless, the instructions are well written and complete, the black-and-white diagrams are detailed and well drawn, and the author is generous with suggestions for using and combining the patterns. many border designs are included, and also ideas for the filler blocks that add even more pattern. the diagrams of the blocks and layouts could be easily copied to test color schemes.

the quilts in the color section are stunning and inspiring. there is a wide range of fabric styles and color schemes that demonstrate the versatility of this technique.

there is a definite relation to the stack-and-whack technique, but i like this better because there is more control of the design elements without too much extra effort.

the only problem i have with the instructions is that the author does not use templates. rotary cutting some of the shapes may be quick, but wastes fabric. when (definitely not if) i make a quilt this way, i will make templates.

while this is not a book for the absolute beginner, since there are bias edges and lots of points, the instructions are so thorough that a confident or adventurous quilter with a couple of piecing projects under her belt could make one of these quilts.

Young at Heart Quilts: 15 Designs With Color and Style [Paperback]This quilt book is aptly named. The colors in some are very bright or very wild but there are some in softer, more subtle colors. There are 15 quilts patterns of which six caught my attention.

There are eight pages of general and finishing instructions to get you on the right path to making your quilt. Each pattern has a full color photo of the finished project. It also contains a materials and cutting list, instructions on making the blocks and assembling the top and how to finish the project. There are illustrations which show in greater detail what the instructions are telling you.

Any templates that are needed to create a specific quilt are provided at full size. There is no need to run out to the copy shop.A six-page gallery show several of the quilts in different colorways which can help to spark a color idea for your particular tastes.

The last page gives a paragraph bio about author, Julie Popa.If you have a flair for the more off-beat type of quilts, this book will give you plenty of ideas and could even spark a creation or two of your own.

The Aloha Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel [Hardcover] Review

The Aloha Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel [Hardcover]Hawaii is about as far away from Pennsylvania as you can get.And in this book, that's exactly where Elm Creek quilter Bonnie Markham is headed.(Avid readers will recognize Bonnie as the one-time owner of the Grandma's Attic quilt shop, as well as being one of the founders of the Elm Creek quilt camps.)Bonnie and her husband Craig are in the middle of a contentious and stressful divorce. When Claire, Bonnie's old Penn State roommate, invites her to spend the winter on the island of Maui in order to help establish an Aloha Quilt Camp, Bonnie takes her up on the offer. Why not exchange a few months of Northeastern snow for a warm and sandy beach in Paradise?

Bonnie soon finds herself in the unique position of being perched in a vacation destination, where she is neither tourist nor resident. With her friends Claire and Eric, she explores some of the tropical landscape. But at the same time, she and Claire must hunker down and do all of the planning for creating a brand-new quilt camp, based in Claire's large, restored inn.Claire's savvy native assistant Midori introduces Bonnie to the intricacies of crafting Hawaiian-style quilts.Midori's nephew, Hinano, serves as a native guide and historical expert for Bonnie as well, even though the two of them often end up arguing about something. One question continues to linger throughout the storyline:Will Bonnie really return to Elm Creek Manor when her consultation duties are done?Or will she instead decide to relocate to Maui and teach full-time at the Aloha Quilt Camp?

The best fiction is enlightening as well as entertaining.Purists scoff whenever Ms. Chiaverini dares to move her plots away from the safe cocoon of Elm Creek Manor in central Pennsylvania, either geographically or historically. But that's exactly the way Life works.Rarely does a group of individuals remain static. Its members have obligations far and beyond their affiliations with one another.Following those threads away from the center gives these characters (and us) a chance to learn more about their personalities. It also helps us discover the various traditions of quilts in other places and at other times.Kudos to Ms. Chiaverini for once again providing another interesting insight into the universal heritage of intricate stitchery.

Soon Bonnie finds herself looking out on sparkling waters and banyan trees, planning quilting courses, and learning the history and intricacies of Hawaiian quilting, all the while helping Claire run the inn.
As Bonnie's adventure unfolds, it quickly becomes clear that Claire's new business isn't the only excitement in store for her. Her cheating, soon-to-be ex-husband decides he wants her stake in Elm Creek Quilts, which threatens not only her financial well-being but her dearest friendships as well. Luckily she has the artistic challenge of creating her own unique Hawaiian quilt pattern to distract her-and new friends like Hinano Paoa, owner of the Nä Mele Hawai‘i Music Shop, who introduces Bonnie to the fascinating traditions of Hawaiian culture and reminds her that love can be found when and where you least expect it.

Bold and Beautiful: Artful Quilts from Just One Fabric (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Bold and Beautiful: Artful Quilts from Just One Fabric [Paperback]Have you ever picked up a piece of hand dyed fabric or a batik and seen shapes in the way the color flows? Well, that is the key step in creating the projects in Judi Dains new book "Bold and Beautiful Artful Quilts From Just One Fabric". Judi's quilts, and the techniques she uses to create them, will captivate your imagination. The book covers everything you need to know about what to look for when purchasing the fabric, to marking out what designs you see in the fabric. After the piece is marked, you will need to quilt it and there is a terrific chapter on choosing thread. You will need several types of thread for outlining the design elements, quilting the design elements and quilting the background. My favorite lesson on machine quilting the elements was quilting inside the flowers and leaves. The results are stunning and the quilt patterns are well worth the price of the book. After this you will color the quilt using either fabric paints or inks. Just add a little bling with embellishments like rhinestones, beads, buttons and yoyo's and your project is finished. You will soon master Judi's techniques by working your way through the five projects included in the book.

Quilt: Handmade Style (Handmade Style (Thunder Bay Press)) [Paperback] Review

Quilt: Handmade Style) [Paperback]Initially I bought this book for the Japanese hexagonal quilt pattern inside. I love Japanese fabric and had collected a lot of it over the years. The thought of making a patchwork quilt hadn't occurred to me until I was inspired by the design in this book. If you want to make a quilt with a contemporary feel, then you should be able to find something suitable here - there are many different designs in this book and I'm about to start a scrap quilt using 1930s fabrics. The book introduces basic techniques of quilt making. These were sufficient for me as I've been making clothes for many years but may not be good enough for a beginner. A word of warning about the hexagon quilt -the template in the book is not an exact hexagon so you will need to correct this by remeasuring all the sides, otherwise the fabric pieces will not fit very well.

Applique Lace Patterns [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Applique Lace Patterns [Paperback]There's no denying that the award-winning lace applique quilt on the cover is fantastic - and the author's techniques excellent. There were a great many lovely individual lace patterns that could be used for a 'one design item' like a wall hanging. But I had hoped that there would be more discussion of how the author goes through the process of creating one huge, grand design like the cover quilt - with more suggestions of what makes a good design, and more little 'bits and pieces' of lace patterns that could be used to fill in small spaces, instead of 'stand alone' designs.I think it will be necessary for me to do a bit of research on lace 'design' - enlarging photos of the types of lace 'bits' I need, before I can complete a full quilt design like the author's.I do wish she had included this information - so I wouldn't have to search for it AFTER buying the book!I would love to make a SIMILAR quilt - not a copy of the author's - because the reverse applique process is so easy and 'portable'.

This first time author is known throughout the quilt world for her beautiful applique work. Her prizewinning quilt LINDA'S LACE has been seen throughout the world. This easy-to-do technique is fun, fast, and portable- perfect for quilters on the move. All you need aretwo pieces of fabric, scissors, thread, and a needle - the projects are quite portable. Lacy applique is also good for scissor-less airline travel. To prepare, just cut and baste your block, and it's ready to go. Linda also tells how to find design ideas, represent them in a drawing, and create an applique pattern from the drawings. Blendable Curves: Stack, Slice & Sew Unique Quilts in a Weekend [Paperback] Review

Blendable Curves: Stack, Slice & Sew Unique Quilts in a Weekend [Paperback]I just got to talk to Peggy and now I know why I love her book - Blendable Curves. She takes basic blocks that are simple for any quilter - like nine-patches - and cuts them in half with a free form curve.THEN, she has you sew the curved sides back together to complete the block.

I know what you're thinking - I don't sew curves.Well I didn't either, until now - because once you've sewn the curve, the block is re-sized!Nothing has to match - shoot, it's not SUPPOSED to match - so this is the perfect beginner project. You can just have fun with color and design. And while you're at it, you can take all of those blocks that WEREN'T perfect - and transform them into works of art!

Our local guild just hosted a nine-patch exchange. As you know, not all seam allowances are created equal, so the blocks are not all exactly the same size.Peggy has the perfect solution. In "A Leap of Faith" she used the "blended nines" to create a breathtaking backdrop for an applique quilt.

Pleasantville is my favorite quilt in the book because it is very graphic - reds, whites and blacks - or if you are in Buckeye country, we swear it reads as Scarlet and Gray! But, for those of you who cheer for the wrong team, this quilt would work just as well in other school colors.

In this particular quilt, Peggy inserted red piping between the curved sides of the black and white log cabins. It gives the whole quilt an "art deco" look with a very masculine feel - and as a mother of four boys, I love finding a quilt that the men in my life appreciate!

For those of you who loved Piping Hot Curves by Susan Cleveland, this is a natural progression.

Peggy describes this as a transitional book.First, beginning students can learn to make the traditional blocks - half-square triangles, nine-patches, quarter-square triangles, etc. There is no pressure because if their points don't match, they will learn how to "curve them up" in the next class! She has totally eliminated the intimidation factor!

Once the students have learned the basics, they can bring those blocks to a "Blendable Curves" class and let their imagination soar! Now that they have learned the rules - Peggy can promptly show you how to break them - with absolutely stunning results!

And, PLEASE take the time to read her instructions!!! I know it is more fun to skip to the projects, but this woman knows what she is doing.I especially like her explanation about how to press seams.AND, she actually gives instructions - with graphics - on how to bind a quilt the right way!Keep this book by your machine so you can pull it out every time you finish a project - you'll be glad you did!

Once you have explored her techniques, you will want to play with all of those loose blocks in your stash left over from other projects.Remember, the blocks are resized after the sewing is complete so you are free to mix and match to your heart's content! The skies the limit!
