The Quilt I.D. Book: 4000 Illustrated and Indexed Patterns [Hardcover] Review

The Quilt I.D. Book: 4000 Illustrated and Indexed Patterns [Hardcover]THE QUILT I.D. BOOK is a book that every quilter would love to have in her personal library. There are so many quilting patterns and many of them have several names that were used to describe them. This guide can help with quilt identification and it also presents 4,000 patterns for quilters to use.

The book was published in 1986 and I can't even begin to think of the hours of research that went into identifying the patterns and combing them with the various names they were given over several hundred years of quilting. Judy Rehmel, the author, is from Indiana and I'm assuming that her research has been mostly American quilting names.

Wonderful book!

Mandala Quilt Designs (Dover Needlework Series) [Paperback] Review

Mandala Quilt Designs [Paperback]If you want a bit of magic in your quilting knowledge to date, this is a "best to be owned" type of book.Ms.Pasquini introduced certaintechiniques in quiltmaking in this book that I thought the quilt police would come and lock up me upfor having too much fun and relaxation while tryingmore challenging techniques...
I am a fan of this lady's books, she introduces certain new concepts in cutting out fabrics, and how to utilze angles into circular motifs. The other nifty thing is that the circle quilts can easily have corners added to them, or project outwards for a non traditional wallhanging. With some of the newer "pellan" products available online,an odd shaped quilt can be hung, and still keep it's shape. It is my favorite of two books of Ms. Pasquini's that I own.

The Quilt Maniac's Playbook / Fuel for the Quilt Imagination [Paperback] Review

The Quilt Maniac's Playbook / Fuel for the Quilt Imagination [Paperback]The Quilt Maniac's Playbook, Fuel for the Quilt Imagination by Nicole Chambers not just another quilting book.
Before reading the author's biographical information, it was clear that this book was written by a polished, professional writer with an imaginative use of language that makes her book a pleasure to read. Glancing at the first few color plates of her quilts, it is just as obvious that she is a meticulous quilter with a well-developed flair for color and design. All but three of the striking quilts in the chapter, Quilt Gallery, are designed and made by Nicole herself-a testament of her dedication to her own book.
Color is Only the Beginning presents thorough, easy to understand color fundamentals. Other teachers of color and design like me will find it refreshing in its approach. "Value is the Big Kahuna, the Big Cheese, the Big Daddy when it comes to color and design," the author declares. "How you use value will have a significant effect on how the colors will interact with one another.""...it's not surprising to find that contrast and unity are the central components of good design and the heart and soul of making good color choices," Nicole adds then proceeds to explain and illustrate these positions.

Uncovering Traditional Quilts: Adventures in Piecing [Paperback] Review

Uncovering Traditional Quilts: Adventures in Piecing [Paperback]This book is more than what it might seem at first look.Yes, it is a primer for making simple traditional-style quilts.Beginners as well as more experienced quilters will have excellent results using Joyce Jones' easy techniques, largely new to America. One happy fact is that no triangles have to be cut or pieced to create any of the many new designs in the book - hard to believe, but true! The author presents her system of quilt construction and her "quilt shorthand" language for analyzing any traditional quilt patterns clearly and with humor. But what I found even more intriguing are the many original designs themselves.I've been quilting for a number of years, and I'm pretty familiar with traditional designs. These quilts look like they might have been made one hundred years ago by our great grandmothers - almost! In each case, there is a freshness to the design; a bit of a different look that lets the reader know this book comes from somewhere else - New Zealand in this case.I'm tempted to make several of these quilts, because I know that each one is going to look original and refreshingly new to my fellow quilters. If you like to piece, like the geometry of traditional designs but want to make something just a bit different from the usual, and want to work quickly and accurately, give this book a try.The author covers, with thoroughness and clarity and excellent illustrations and photos, the basics of fabric selection, preparation, all the steps in quilt construction, and finishing techniques. From inspiration to standing back and listening to the complements, this book will be an invaluable guide to you in your next several projects.

Product Description:
It's a winning combination - the ease of rotary methods partnered with the appeal of traditional bed quilt designs. Your next quilt cover story begins on location in New Zealand. There the author has developed an international shorthand to help those who are making the quilts destined to become tomorrow's heirlooms. Designed to spark creativity, this book offers breakthrough understanding - and mastery - of quilt units. Each of nearly two dozen stunning quilts in the projects sections is made using simple squares and triangles. AUTHORBIO: Joyce Jones' first step into the quilting world was taking a class on how to make templates and do English paper piecing. But the idea of making a quilt was put into her 'too hard' basket for a number of years. Later, when Joyce wanted to make a quilt for her son, she turned to a self-taught quilter, Eileen Haycock, who taught her everything needed to make that first quilt. Joyce's continuing desire to find easier ways to do things led her to begin teaching the methods in this book. REVIEW: The Midwest Book Review says, "Joyce Jones' Uncovering Traditional Quilts provides piecing tips and techniques, showing how to explore combinations of piecing techniques and how to use squares and rectangles to easy advantage. A recommended pick for avid quilters."

Shoreline Quilts: 15 Glorious Get-Away Quilts [Paperback] Review

Shoreline Quilts: 15 Glorious Get-Away Quilts [Paperback]This compilation of designs captures that distinct place and season, the sunny summer beaches and shores as seen through the varied styles of dozens of talented quilters. These quilts use a wide variety of different techniques, explained and illustrated in great detail, and there are quilts at all levels, for beginners and veterans alike. My favorite of these is Flavin Glover's 'A Day at the Beach,' a traditional geometric rendering of the beach with its colorful umbrellas done in modified log cabin blocks. Bringing a smile is Ami Simms' 'Bikini Quilt,' dubbed by her mother 'Boobs and Bellybuttons,' which is made in a kind of tessellated arrangement of hourglass blocks. And Elsie Vredenburg renders the lighthouses of Fundy in a wonderful profusion of snail's trail blocks. This book will inspire you to raid your stash for beachy blues and browns and go dig out your flip-flops.

Triangle-Free Quilts [Paperback]This book may feature quilts made entirely of squares and rectangles, but several of the designs are really gorgeous, and even quite imaginative. Product Description:

Easy Quilts from Your Closet is a guide to making the most of the fabrics you love. Quilting is a great way to recycle T-shirts, blue jeans, neckties, pj's , and even prom dresses-to give old favorites a quick and cozy makeover.

These fifteen projects teach three of the most basic quilting techniques: patchwork piecing, foundation piecing, and applique. Readers learn how to "deconstruct" their favorite garments and then reconstruct the pieces to form the small individual blocks that are stitched together to form a quilt.

Block by block, they'll learn how to make quilt tops and "sandwiches" and then decoratively stitch their surfaces by machine-with straight lines or freeform shapes. They'll also learn how to assemble blocks to make three full sampler quilts, adding sashing, binding, and designer labels.

Big Book of Small Quilts (For the Love of Quilting) [Paperback] Review

Big Book of Small Quilts [Paperback]For some years now, I've been waiting for new books by Berg, Von Holt and Johnson. The three authors wrote two excellent books for quilters:
"Little Quilts" and "Celebrate with little quilts". These were inspiring
books for quilters who want to sew quilts from traditional American block
patterns.
Recently I found what I've been waiting for: the "Big Book of Small Quilts". This book by Mary Hickey continues in the style of the "Little quilt books". The instructions are easy to follow; the patterns are traditional block patterns; and the size of the quilts are small, so the results may be enjoyed in a short while.
I am very happy to recommend this book!

Pepper Cory Quilting Pattern Collection [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Pepper Cory Quilting Pattern Collection [Paperback]Pepper Cory first published this book in 1987. The old book featured full size patterns and was 11 x 17" which still doesn't fit in my book shelf. The new book is a much better size to make it easier to resize patterns. It has more patterns plus pages with photos of how to make stencils, mark quilts, choosing the right quilting design for your quilt, and 70 pages of quilting designs. There is a small section of "judging tips" in case you are interested in entering your quilt in a show. Some, but not all of the patterns are continuous line designs for machine quilting.I believe that the others could be adapted if you wanted to use them for machine quilting. There is also a 2 page section of miniature quilting designs.
I think the Pepper Cory Quilting Pattern Collection would be a good edition to your quilting library

Product Description:
Pepper Cory authored two classic books of quilting designs - Quilting Designs from the Amish and Quilting Designs from Antique Quilts. Long out of print and now considered to be collectible vintage quilt books, they easily sell for over $100 apiece on the Internet! The very best patterns from among those in both books were chosen, completely redrawn, and compiled into this new collection of five dozen patterns. Twenty original patterns were resized to fit a standard 8-inch block for easier enlargements, reductions, and scanning. Some of the traditional patterns were updated into continuous-line designs for today's machine quilters. A few new blocks were designed to co-ordinate with the originals. Pepper was one of the first quilt designers to make the leap to plastic. Her impressive collection of quilting patterns is available from StenSource. What makes this book unique is Pepper s photo essay on how to use stencils. The step-by-step photographs show how to make your own plastic stencils from the patterns in the book, and how to mark your quilts with the newest tools and pens available. A handy reference icon identifies patterns already sold as stencils.

AnglePlay Blocks: Simple Half-Rectangle Triangles, 84 No-Math Quilt Blocks, Easy-To-Follow Charts [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

AnglePlay Blocks: Simple Half-Rectangle Triangles, 84 No-Math Quilt Blocks, Easy-To-Follow Charts [Paperback]Since there is no book description to-date, I guess I'll be the one to tell you: This book is a companion to the template set by the same name. The template set is NOT included but can be ordered (from the author) for $60, plus another $20 if you want a holder for them. The book relies on your buying the templates. It gives tracings of each in the back, so you could make your own, but as most quilters know, there is a big difference between homemade sheet-plastic templates and laser-cut plexi-templates, both in accuracy and safety. Just be aware: an additional purchase is almost certainly required with this book!! I wish they'd said that up front, and I'd have passed on this one.

On-Point Quilts: Designs on the Diagonal [Paperback] Review

On-Point Quilts: Designs on the Diagonal [Paperback]As quilters, we become accustom to making quilts in squares. This book will help you break that habit by turning the squares on point. What a different look an "old" square will have when it is set on point. And you get an added "extra".It will take less squares to make a quilt than if you set them "straight".

The trick with doing an on-point quilt is the setting triangles.Ms. Warehime does the math for you.All you have to do is follow her lead. She gives the square size needed to make the corner and side triangles in easy to follow steps.Making a quilt on point is no harder than doing it in a square. You simply assemble it row by row but instead of using all squares, you incorporate the corner and size triangles in the rows.

There are ten quilts and she also includes an overview of the basic quilting steps in case you are a new quilter or need to refresh your memory on a certain step. Each project has a full color photo of the finished quilt, along with a paragraph about it.The instructions include finished quilt and block size and a materials list needed to create the project.

A cutting list is found next in the instructions. Then the assembling steps come next which include graphics to help you visualize the written words.Top assembly and finishing suggestions complete the steps. There is a three paragraph bio about Ms. Warehime at the end of the book.

Why not try giving your old quilts a new look by setting them on point? You will be surprised at how different they will look set on point.

Grab this book for help in getting the needed triangles cut and then make several of the projects in the book as well.

Design and Make Your Own Contemporary Sampler Quilt (Dover Needlework Series) [Paperback] Review

Design and Make Your Own Contemporary Sampler Quilt [Paperback]I make large quilts based on single block themes, something about which this book talks about.I learned alot of pointers, and I have to say if I wrote a "how to" book,I would aspire to write something clear and uncomplicated as this author manages to descibe her techniques and ideas.
Its a smart purchase,if you want direct, yet a different understanding of how to design your own work.Even measurements for fabrics are simple to understand, and very easilly understood for someone who wants to try designing their own work. The Author gives many examples of how certain 4,5,9 patch designs can be elaborated into a lage bed spread.Very nice diagrams too!On the whole,I would say to another quilter,if you have made 4 or 5 quilts, and are looking for a next step up in your techniques, this book might be enough to keep you happy in your work for another couple of years.I wish I wrote it.

Thoroughly Modern Dresden: Quick & Easy Construction 13 Lively Quilt Projects for All Skill Levels [Paperback] Review

Thoroughly Modern Dresden: Quick & Easy Construction 13 Lively Quilt Projects for All Skill Levels [Paperback]I have been quilting for seven years and devour as much quilt literature and periodicals as I can.I thought this was a well written, easy to understand, and enjoyable book.I recommend it for anyone who wishes to expand on the Dresden plate theme.Anelie Belden, the author, understands quiltmakers and encourages us to use her projects as a jumping off point to expand our own ideas. She does that beautifully.
Visually, the book is stunning and the fabric choices of her projects are cheerful and engaging.
**All of the projects in this book are for plates with twenty blades.**My Dresden tool is for plates with sixteen blades (I use the Marti Michelle tool, not the "Fast 2 Cut" one she recommends in the book) but I am having no problems adapting the projects accordingly.I do strongly recommend, that if you are going to make a lot of Dresden plates, you should get yourself a Dresden plate rotary cutting template.Life will be a lot easier!!

Christmas Quilts From Hopscotch: Warm and Cozy, Merry and Bright [Paperback] Review

Christmas Quilts From Hopscotch: Warm and Cozy, Merry and Bright [Paperback]I will be telling my age with this review but if you remember "flip-books", then you will know how this book is printed. For those of you who are not old enough, a flip-book is one where you "flip" the book in order to read all of it.Half of the book is printed reading one direction and the other half you need to "flip" the book over to read the rest.

One half of this book is MERRY AND BRIGHT and the other is WARM AND COZY.Each has the same patterns but each side is done in different color schemes.Like the title says, one is done in bright colors and the other is done in earthy tones.

Beginning with the WARM AND COZY side, you find the information on appliquéing the pieces for each project.A discussion between using wool or cotton is given farther back in the book. The patterns are of Christmas stockings, Cloth balls, a tree skirt, two wall hangings, an Advent calendar and a lap quilt. Each side has complete instructions for doing the projects --- one in bright colors and one in earthy tones.

Color photos of the project are shown at the start of each set of instructions.Finished size and skill levels are given next with a materials list following that.Cutting and piecing instructions are next with very good graphics to help you follow along. The wording of the instructions is well written so you don't have any trouble figuring out what the next step is.Assembling and binding are the final steps in the list of directions.

If you have never understood what the choice of fabric can do to make the same project look different, this is a book that will help you grasp that concept.Besides, how many times have you made a project for one friend and wished to make the same for another friend whose home decorations are the exact opposite of what you just made but weren't sure what color choices would be best?I know I have and this book shows you both sides of the color spectrum. It is a great "twofer" for one price.

Pieced Curves So Simple: The 6-Minute Circle and Other Time-Saving Delights [Paperback] Review

Pieced Curves So Simple: The 6-Minute Circle and Other Time-Saving Delights [Paperback]PIECED CURVES spends the first twenty four pages explaining things like the essentials such as materials and equipment; color and design principles, where to get inspiration and things about fabric such as to wash or not to wash, building a fabric pantry (I call it a stash) and creating a color palette. That is fully a quarter of the book.

The technique, which was what I wanted to learn, was explained in four pages. It wasn't the simple thing I thought it would be.It was involved because it takes eleven steps to create a circle on a square. When I make such a square, I cut out a circle, iron under a seam allowance and blind stitch it to the square.Done.This technique involves glue, sewing between the square and the circle on the cut seam allowance and removing the freezer paper pattern.Too much for me.

Of the quilts shown in the book. I might try my hand at four or five of them. The rest were way too involved for my tastes. They were more like fiber art than quilts, something very beautiful but nothing I would want to do.This is a good book for anyone who is involved in fiber arts or needs a good review of color and design principles.

Nickel Quilts: Great Designs from 5 Inch Scraps [Paperback] Review

Nickel Quilts: Great Designs from 5 Inch Scraps [Paperback]If you are like me, you have fabric pieces of all sizes, from tiny scraps to major yardage, stashed on shelves and in boxes and drawers all over your house. This book is perfect for people like us. The quilts are beautiful and surprisingly simple to construct, for the most part. The authors devote the first part of the book to a series of techniques for converting 5" squares into checkerboard blocks, half-square triangle blocks, quarter-square triangle blocks, and "picket fences" as efficiently as possible. These directions are very complete and well explained. They also suggest buying a little extra fabric each time you shop, and ctting off a five-inch strip right away. Plus they give great instructions on how to hold a 5-inch square swap, including how to keep track of everybody's contributions.
Then, in the second part, they give directions for a series of quilts from very easy to a little more complicated (though none of them are actually difficult). Even the easiest quilts are surprisingly complex-looking, and all of them are designed to be made in three sizes. The color scheme of most of the quilts shown is medium-to-dark traditional prints on cream, but there is no reason not to choose a completely different scheme. (I am thinking about oversize splashy prints on a black-and-white background for one of the simpler quilts, for example, or bright plaids on batik.) Now all I have to do is start cutting...
