Feathers That Fly: How to Design, Mark, and Machine Quilt Feather Motifs [Paperback] Review

Feathers That Fly: How to Design, Mark, and Machine Quilt Feather Motifs [Paperback]I purchased this book sight unseen based on the author's description.Once I received it, I was disappointed in the lack of new information or insights. Most of what is provided in this book is more thoroughly presented in other machine quilting books. The only "new" technique presented is a description on how Caryl Fallert creates her machine quilted feathers.I also found the exercises and sample quilts uninspiring. I would heartily recommend Guide to Machine Quilting by Diane Gaudynski and Infinite Feathers by Anita Shackleford instead. At a minimum, view the book in person so you can decide whether its worth spending your money on.

Quilts for All Seasons (For the Love of Quilting) [Paperback] Review

Quilts for All Seasons [Paperback]I have enjoyed this book, it has many cleaver patterns to use with their quilts. While making one though I discovered they are pretty vague on the directions. Saying something like attach piece b to piece a but not telling which side of the piece to attach. I have had to take out several rows of stiches and now realize I have to look carefully at the picture and try to figure out which way the pieces go. I'm making the turtle quilt right now and their are many pieces each with many sides. It's a good idea book though. Enjoy! Just try the pieces before actually sewing them.

American Doll Quilts: 16 Little Projects That Honor A Tradition [Paperback] Review

American Doll Quilts: 16 Little Projects That Honor A Tradition [Paperback]I first became interested in doll quilts in October 2004 as I tired from a creative binge of sewing doll clothes, but still wanted low commitment sewing projects to work on. Little quilts and doll quilts are smaller versions of larger quilt patterns. Doll quilts are an excellent start for any beginning quilter or for those who prefer short term projects. Historically, doll quilts were often made by children as they practiced sewing and quilting skills. Today, they are suitable projects for beginning adults as well as supervised children.

"American Doll Quilts" breaks quilt styles into time periods, giving several different quilt patterns for each time period. There are 16 historical quilt designs in this book; complete with lists of materials, directions, color illustrations of each step and full color photos of completed quilts. The author describes fabric, color, and pattern choices for making historical quilts as well as how and when to tea dye a fabric for an antique look.

Although no specific dolls are mentioned or endorsed in this book, I wanted to mention that the historical nature of these quilt patterns makes them a nice accessory to the American Girl historical dolls (as well as antique and reproduction dolls). A Colonial quilt could be given to Felicity, a Western pioneer quilt could be made for Kirsten, a Civil War Era/Underground Railroad quilt could be made for Addy, a Victorian Crazy Quilt might look nice on Samantha and Nellie's beds, and Depression and WW2 era quilts can be made for Kit and Molly. Pattterns for all of these eras and quilt types are included in this book.

Whether made by an adult or an older child, these quilts are absolutely suited for today's audience of young historians and nostaligic adults. This book is well done. Whether you are interested in sewing historical little quilts for wall hangings, to display with antique or historical dolls, or for child's play, this book can help you create something you will be proud to have made.

Celebrate the sweet, centuries-old American tradition of antique doll quilts with stories of the past and heirlooms for the future. These simple projects will capture the charm of yesteryear for a child-or the child within.
Sixteen designs represent doll quilts made during different periods in American history, starting with the colonial period and moving through the Civil War, the Victorian era, the Great Depression, and World War II. Make the past come alive with simple patterns much like the ones children learned to stitch long ago.
Projects in a range of sizes up to 20" x 22" include an embroidered medallion quilt, a crazy quilt, Civil War era quilts and needle cases, an Amish quilt and a friendship pillow easy enough for a child to make.
Also includes information on fabrics and designs popular during the different historical periods.

Simply Scrappy Quilts [Paperback] Review

Simply Scrappy Quilts [Paperback]Quilting has for the past 20+ years been one of my passions. When I started quilting here in Norway around 1980 there were very few quilters around. And I started in the most simple way, cutting fabrics and piecing it together.
During the years quiltbooks came on the market, and it was always interesting to see new techniques.
Then, I think it was in 1993 Nancy J. Martin came to Norway to give quilt classes. I spent a week-end with her and learned so many new things, a whole new world opened for me.
Nancy J. Martin has written more than 25 books on quiltmaking, and she is the founder and president og That Patchwork Place Inc, the publisher of America's Best-Loved Quilt Books. Nancy introduced me to the Bias Square cutting ruler, for me, and many quilters with me, a totally new way of cutting your fabric and sewing it together again to make the most wonderful patterns.
In this book Nancy J. Martin shows us the bias ruler - a way to make the most wonderful quilts with a scrappy look in her new and time-saving technique. From simple, but intricate looking friendship star quilts, to scrappy house quilts, Ocean Waves, Road to Oklahoma.....you find them all in this book. The book starts with a full color gallery section, and you also find color illustrations and photos all through the book. A must for every quilters book collection.

Magical Four-Patch and Nine-Patch Quilts [Paperback]Though I love her work, I am disappointed in Porcella's new book. Not only do the projects lack her work's usual vibrancy, but the diagrams and directions contain inaccuracies--for example, a drawing showsa strip of seven 2-inch squares as being the same length as a 20-inch strip.

Lynne Edwards' New Sampler Quilt Book: Twenty Techniques for Machine and Hand Patchwork: New Ideas New Methods [Hardcover] Review

Lynne Edwards' New Sampler Quilt Book: Twenty Techniques for Machine and Hand Patchwork: New Ideas New Methods [Hardcover]There are several things that sets this book apart from other quilt sampler books.First, and most important is that the instructions for each block are provided individually, as opposed to general instructions provided in the front section of the book. The instructions are quite detailed, clear, precise and specific to each block. It is the next best thing to having an instructor in the room with you.Second, there are many variations of the quilts and blocks provided throughout the book, one more beautiful than the next.Third, the actual blocks are quite interesting and would be appropriate for any level of quilter.I believe that the novice and experienced quilter will benefit from and enjoy this book equally.Personally, I am a much better quilter for having used this book.

Say It with Quilts [Hardcover] Review

Say It with Quilts [Hardcover]I agree with the reviewer from Incline Village, NV.The book has cute patterns! I saw the HGTV show where they showcased "Molly's Quilt" -- the beautiful pansy quilt. They said on the show the quilt was good for beginners. That inspired me to purchase the book. We all have to start somewhere in quilting and this book gives me ideas for selecting colors, something so hard to do when we all start out.Maybe the quiltsin the book are not perfectly sewn, but I would be glad to claim any one of them as mine. Quilts don't have to be tiny complicated triangles and curves to be beautiful and this book proves it.

Baby Patchwork: Small Quilts & Other Gifts [Paperback] Review

Baby Patchwork: Small Quilts & Other Gifts [Paperback]Baby Patchwork / 0-8069-9933-0

I have about 50+ second-hand quilting books (okay, not that many, but it's still a lot). Since they all cover a lot of common ground (use rotary tools for cutting, sewing machines are nifty, thimbles prevent massive internal bleeding, etc.), it's usually just best to note whether this one covers the basics well (it does) and what sets it apart from all the other quilting books.

First of all, the book is very pretty and modern. The page backgrounds exude a crisp, clean, shiny white and there's not very much of the "country quilting" motif here. Definitely, the editors were going for a "not your grandmother's quilting resource" here.

Second, there's a lot of new ideas here. The quilted braided wreaths are great, and provide a new way to display your craft on the wall besides the standard "quilt on a wall" design. There's some decent gift bags here, and plenty of baby quilts, and (believe it or not) a quilted "cake" to trot out on baby's birthday. I'm not really sure that baby would prefer a quilted "cake" to a yummy, messy confection, but it's cute, different, and low-fat.

I recommend this book if you can get it at a decent price. It's got some new ideas in it, and the presentation is certainly very clean and crisp.

The Quilting Bee [Hardcover] Review

The Quilting Bee [Hardcover]This is a simple introduction to quilting for kids.It starts out by telling a little history on quilt making. Then it goes on to tell about various quilt patterns. The book features a helpful page of pictures of items used in quilting such as quilting frames and rotary cutters. In the end of the book is a great idea we hope to use in our home school.A classroom quilt project is started by writing letter and mailing squares of fabric to children's book authors and illustrators. They are asked to decorate the square and mail it back to the student. The squares are made into a quilt.

What did you like or not like about the book?

I enjoyed sharing this book with my great grandmother. She is a sewer and we liked looking at all the patterns for the quilts.
