French Braid Obsession: New Ideas for the Imaginative Quilter [Paperback] Review

French Braid Obsession: New Ideas for the Imaginative Quilter [Paperback]I have the first book by this author and have made two quilts from it. They are fun and impressive in their construction. I was hoping for many more new ideas with her second book and was disappointed to find that the first 37 pages repeat methods from the first book. So if you don't own the first book, you really can get away with buying just this second book. And if you already own the first book, just be forewarned that the second one repeats a LOT of the first one!

Garden-Inspired Quilts: Design Journals for 12 Quilt Projects [Paperback] Review

Garden-Inspired Quilts: Design Journals for 12 Quilt Projects [Paperback]I anticipated receiving this book because I was drawn to the photo on the cover - a flower represented in half photo, half quilt. I expected the quilts inside to be replicas of nature.Instead there are one or two like this and the rest are not "garden-inspired" at all, as far as I can tell. The first quilt is a basic log cabin quilt. The second is a folk heart type quilt.I was really hoping for more artistic, realistic quilts. The photos are so lovely...I wish the quilts compared!

Native American Designs 2 [Paperback]If you already own "Quilting Patterns from Native American Designs" and "Native American Designs for Quilting" do not bother with "Native American Designs 2."As Ms Mori states in the introduction, which it is unlikely most folks read prior to ordering this book, "Native American Designs 2" is a selection of her favorites from the titles shown above. It does have a few "bonus" patterns, but if you're expecting additions to Ms Mori's previous excellent compilations, this isn't it.

This Old Quilt: A Heartwarming Celebration of Quilts And Quilting Memories [Paperback] Review

This Old Quilt: A Heartwarming Celebration of Quilts And Quilting Memories [Paperback]THIS OLD QUILT is a delightful patchwork of quilts, stories, art illustrations and vintage photographs. I was fascinated from the first moment and didn't want to put the book down.
There are five chapters in THIS OLD QUILT and they offer stories about learning to quilt; the quilting traditions of the Amish, Hopi Indians and African Americans; the warmth and love that comes from homemade quilts; the camaraderie of quilting bees; and many lovely stories and poems concerning the American tradition of quilting.
I was so happy to see many of the paintings of Sandi Wickersham that were used to illustrate this book. Sandi lives close by and much of her work is indicative of my area of Virginia.I own a few of her prints and it was fun to find them featured in THIS OLD QUILT.Several other artists including Diane Phalen's work was also used in the book. Their colorful and detailed quilting scenes add an extra layer of depth and pleasure to the book.
I poured over the vintage photographs that are mostly black and white or color enhanced. The ladies from the past are shown displaying their work or sitting among friends and quilting together. One 1936 Depression Era photograph is so striking! It's of a lady standing on the porch of a wooden cabin and displaying her gorgeous quilt that was made in the Dresden Plate pattern. The viewer senses that inside that unpainted cabin, life was probably pretty difficult, but this lady was able to make a work of art out of scraps, and a picture of her beautiful quilt endures for all of us to admire.
There are many lovely stories to read and enjoy, of both fact and fiction. My favorites are: HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT by Whitney Otto, THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB by Sandra Dallas and HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW by Jacqueline Tobin. THIS OLD QUILT is a treasure trove of quilting, memories and lovely pictures. I'm so happy that I treated myself to this endearing book.

Nature's Beauty in Redwork [Paperback] Review

Nature's Beauty in Redwork [Paperback]I am a Redwork lover (or bluework or greenwork or any other same color work). It is easy in that you don't have to worry about whether the next line to embroider is a different color and it let's me work and watch TV at the same time without worrying about color changes. It is also the first craft I learned as a small child when I stitched my embroidery work to my skirt! And even with this mistake, I still enjoy embroidery today.

Debra Feece found an antique quilt at an outdoor flea market and grabbed it up.She shares 25 of the 72 patterns in this book.Maybe we can talk her into sharing the rest in another couple of books so that way we too can recreate this wonderful antique quilt.

The patterns range from flowers, of course as what antique quilt is complete without a flower or two, to birds and animals.Debra provides a page of general embroidery instructions and there is even a photo of a throw pillow as a suggestion of other ways to use the patterns.

If you are a craft teacher or a lover of embroidery, take a look at NATURE'S BEAUTH IN REDWORK.You won't be disappointed.

Quilting Among Friends [Paperback] Review

Quilting Among Friends [Paperback]This is a book that will remain in my library! Not only are there 15 quilt patterns, there is also a section of 53 blocks. This section shows the whole block, an exploded block, a list of colors used, the shapes needed and then a size list for anywhere from three to five different sizes of blocks.I know the cover says 55 so the other two must be counted from one of the 15 patterns.

The book also provides sections on how to do a fabric exchange, a block swap, have a block party, create a row quilt or do a round robin. The actual projects are divided into Charity and Children quilts, quilting retreat projects and milestone quilts - those that mark an event in life. The final section is a gallery of finished quilts.

Each project begins with a colored photo and a paragraph about the quilt.Material and cutting lists are clear and have graphics to help explain the written word. The piecing of the blocks is next and it, too, has graphics to go with the instructions.Templates are provided at full size if they are needed for appliqué.No specific instructions are given on what design to use to quilt the quilt.

When thinking of your next gift for your quilting friend, she/he will thank you for giving them this book. Now I only have to decide which quilt I want to make first and which quilt to have our guild start on first for our charities!!!

Vintage Quilts: Identifying, Collecting, Dating, Preserving & Valuing [Hardcover] Review

Vintage Quilts: Identifying, Collecting, Dating, Preserving & Valuing [Hardcover]First the pros: lots of quality photos, covering a wide variety of patterns and eras.
Cons: basically, this book needs to be titled just "Vintage Quilts".The "Collecting, Dating, and Preserving" material is limited to just 4 pages at the beg. of the book. The rest of the volume is a "Value Guide", with a short description under each quilt photo, a notation as to "excellent condition", "fair condition" etc, and a dollar value estimate. The problem here is that nowhere in the book do they state their definition of what they consider to be good, excellent, etc. There's no excuse for this--both Aug and Newman are listed as judges in the book bios--defining their terms should have been covered in the opening pages.Without that, it makes their appraisals pretty much useless to the reader.(The photos are not large enough to show the quilt's condition.)
The other thing I thought was odd is that they don't compare individual quilts.I.e. show us two twin-size Bowtie quilts and explain [what they're worth.]In other words, show us how to appraise and value individual quilts.Which IS the whole point of the book, according to the title anyway. (Dang it, now I'm annoyed all over again!)
Needless to say, I'm returning my copy.

Photo Fun: Print Your Own Fabric for Quilts & Crafts [Paperback] Review

Photo Fun: Print Your Own Fabric for Quilts & Crafts [Paperback]I purchased this book, because I was looking for a hobby.Something to use my computer and still be crafty.I experimented briefly with Scrapbooking, but it didn't suit my personality, but this book seemed to.The major problem was the inability to locate the inkjet fixative in my local stores, but after going through the book, it told me how to buy the supplies online, which I did.I did a test project and it worked perfectly.I have not performed any of the projects listed in the book yet, but I've used the book as a guideline and have created my own projects. This is great fun, even though it stresses the HP Printer, it works equally well with my Canon Printer. You can buy inkjet printable fabric sheets in the stores, but I liked this because Iam only limited by the printing size of my printer.I can use any fabric, not just the pre cut sizes.

Bound for Glory: Five Patriotic Quilts [Paperback] Review

Bound for Glory: Five Patriotic Quilts [Paperback]As an American, I love red, white and blue quilts that show a patriotic theme.BOUND FOR GLORY provides five such patterns:Paper Pinwheels, Carrie Nation, Sergeant's Chevron, Union and Liberty Star.

The Pinwheel has been a favorite pattern of mine and this one is done in mostly red.I would "flip" the red and the blue positions but the pattern is gorgeous.Simple squares and triangles and you have it!

Carrie Nation is all squares while Sergeant's Chevron is simple triangles and strips even though it looks more complicated. It has a star appliqué to complete the chevron.Union is triangles and squares and strips and the Liberty start has a square in a square along with squares and strips.None of the five are extremely complicated but all have the look of being that way.

There are three pages of quiltmaking techniques that include diagrams which make following the instructions very easy. Each quilt is shown on a full page in the colors the author chose.Remember, you can always flip the colors to suite your own room or tastes just like I will do in the Pinwheel.Which one will you make first?

Treasury of Quilting Patterns [Paperback] Review

Treasury of Quilting Patterns [Paperback]This book contains 128 pages of patterns for quilting. That is, the patterns to stitch the quilt not patterns for blocks. Each motif has several variations, including a pattern to be used on the boarder and around corners.I especially like the art deco floral motifs. There is also a motif called 'bouncing bunnies' which I will use on a baby quilt I'm designing. The pages are easily copied either on a copy machine or with tracing paper and pencil. My daughter can manipulate them on the computer but I'm not that high tech, yet. Many of the motifs could be done in embrodery or made into templates for applique. What a shame this book is out of print!I found a copy in a library but must have one of my very own.If you need instructions on how to quilt this is the wrong book for you. There is some information on hand and machine quilting in the beginning of the book but the real focus in on the patterns. The book also includes a metric equivalent table and an index (can you tell I'm a librarian?).

Blossoms by the Sea: Making Ribbon Flowers for Quilts [Paperback] Review

Blossoms by the Sea: Making Ribbon Flowers for Quilts [Paperback]I purchased this book directly from Faye during a workshop, and after I read the story, I've referred back to the book over and over again for the instructions for making ribbon and cloth flowers.I loved the story about Celia Thaxter and her life and gardens in what many would consider an inhospitable environment. This book is a loving tribute to Celia, but it is so much more. It tells the story of the quilt Faye made to commemorate Celia's life and includes instructions for many of the flowers on the quilt. So, you get two for your money - a piece of history with glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman as well as a reference book to use again and again. Faye may not have intended to write a book when she began, but what a book she ended up with!

101 Log Cabin Flowers with full-size pattern for foundation piecing [Paperback] Review

101 Log Cabin Flowers with full-size pattern for foundation piecing [Paperback]The book contains 101 beautiful flower blocks, and instructions for 3 projects using these blocks. All blocks and projects are shown in full color.
I'm not a beginner paper (foundation) piecer so I didn't pay all that much attention to the directions at the beginning of the book, although at a quick glance, they do look quite detailed and well thought out, and there are lots of "how-to" drawings.
Block size is NOT shown on the individual patterns. The block sizes are listed in the General Directions at the beginning of the book.[I think they should be listed on each block - my memory isn't what it used to be].The color photograph of the block is not on the same page as the pattern, so you need to refer back and forth for color placement. There is a "grey tones" drawing for each pattern, but I don't find that very helpful - it should be in color (either a drawing or a photograph).Multi-piece patterns are NOT separated, and I find the bold lines (separating the pieces) hard to distinguish from the piecing lines.Seam allowances are also not included.Personally, I find it annoying to have to photocopy the pattern, then cut it apart and add (or account for when sewing) the seam allowance. Lots of people don't mind, tho, so I might be in the minority :).The assembly directions for multi-piece patterns are clearly diagrammed.
I like my patterns to be done a certain way, and in this book, they are not. However, I still love the book because the patterns and projects are gorgeous, and shown in full color. The patterns range from fairly simple to extremely detailed, so there is something for most skill ranges. If you like florals and you like paper (foundation) piecing, I think you'll enjoy the projects in this lovely book :)

Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks [Spiral-bound]Better Homes and Garden books have sure improved since I became disenchanted with them in the 80's.And this is an excellent book no matter if you are a beginner or more accomplished at quilting. It is in an easy to use large spiral book form which makes laying it open as you work on one of the quilts or refer to a procedure for making quilting easier much easier.
It is laid out in a decades genre, where 1830-1860, 0n into 1920-1950 and borders are discussed in excellent detail with clear photos and exact size templates you can copy and use. Since I am fond of the Sunbonnet Sue (page 168) quilt my Grandma Katie made for my bed and dolls cradle I wanted to learn how to make one myself.
I make quilts but they are self designed appliqué types and I wanted to discover the old quilt arts. Although the crazy quilts shown (page 104) come close to what I do.
I personally don't know anyone who wouldn't find this excellent book helpful and being well used.Everytime I start to put the book away I realize that I need it out since I am always doing some type of quilt work....

This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers' Bible Quilt and Other Pieces (Kindle Edition) Review

This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers' Bible Quilt and Other PiecesA sensation from the moment it was first exhibited, since 1886 the Bible Quilt and its reprise, the Pictorial Quilt, made by Georgia native and former slave Harriet Powers has been featured in more than 150 news articles, books, poems and plays. It is thus both remarkable and embarrassing that not until Kyra Hicks's latest work has anyone bothered to verify the received wisdom about the woman who is arguably the world's best-known quilter.

Hicks's easy, conversational and very personal tone belies the painstaking care of her research. What apparently began as an annotated bibliography snowballed into an astonishingly detailed provenance which both documents the lives of key figures in the quilts' history and refutes commonly held, if perennially evolving, assumptions about Powers.

It soon becomes clear to the reader that from the first, everyone who saw Powers's Bible Quilt regarded it as not only unique, but a work of art - high praise given its abstract design, the status of quilts as homely craft, and the tenuous role of black women in turn-of-the-century rural Georgia. Among the visitors of both races crowding to see it at the 1886 Northeast Georgia Fair was Jennie Smith, a white art teacher at an Athens girls' school. Smith was so captivated she tracked down Powers and offered to buy the quilt. After three meetings in four years, she convinced Powers to sell, agreeing to supply the avid quilter with fabric scraps and granting her what can best be described as visitation rights to the quilt. Smith carefully recorded Powers's description of the quilt's subjects, and exhibited it at least once thereafter, identifying Powers as the maker. In 1969 Smith's executor donated the quilt to the Smithsonian, and again it became a sensation.

Other Powers admirers purchased or commissioned a variation now known as the Pictorial Quilt, presented to Charles Cuthbert Hall in 1898 probably when he became Union Theological Seminary's new president. For years Hall displayed it on the wall of his summer house, and even as a child, Hall's great-grandson knew the quilt was "a living thing, not meant to be on a bed, but meant to be art." Like the Bible Quilt, the Pictorial Quilt long remained in appreciative private hands; then in 1961, art collector Maxim Karolik acquired it on behalf of Boston's Museum of Fine Art, where it has been on display since 1975. (It is currently in storage while the MFA undergoes renovation.)

Hicks's tenacious pursuit of primary sources uncovered crucial details about Powers's life which future researchers cannot ignore. She also confirms suspicions that these were not Powers's only quilts. In fact, Powers appears to have been something of a competitor, winning at least one prize for another 1880s quilt. Powers herselfdescribes a fourth quilt's distinctive appearance; is it still hidden, unidentified, in some collection?
It is hard for any diligent researcher to resist sharing every tidbit we unearth; too often, every toy is our favorite. But this can distract rather than illuminate. The reader feels ungrateful complaining that Hicks sometimes provides *too much* information about peripheral characters; nevertheless it is hard not to wish that, for example, the thirteen pages on Karolik's life had instead been devoted to Powers's early years (rarely discussed in other sources) and careful descriptions of the quilts' materials and techniques, both of which Hicks seems to have omitted. But this is praising with faint damns. Hicks's main fault is modesty: she seems to view her book as supplemental when it should be the axis on which any reading on Powers revolves.

The author does yeoman's work viewing her subjects in historical context. A self-identified Christian familiar with Biblical iconography, she avoids the common pitfall of treating Powers's imagery as inscrutable and exotic, and she refrains from Rorschach-test psychologizing. While frankly confronting the patronizing racism of another era, she is also heroically "slow to wrath" (although the reader is baffled by her observation that "no African-American made quilts [were] included" in the groundbreaking 1971 Whitney quilt exhibition, as none of those quilts' makers appear to have been identified.)

Hicks might be amused that white vaudevillian and "Negro mimic" Lucine Finch, fabricator in 1914 of a grotesquely stereotyped "interview" with Powers (who had died four years before), appears to have been no respecter of persons regardless of race - even when she knew them personally. One review sneered that as Mother Goose in her friend's operetta, Finch "unfortunately trusted to her own capacity for making up things on the spur of the moment in preference to adhering to the lines of the part." Hicks's careful work marks a break with this kind of poetic license, and our appreciation of Powers is better for it.

Product Description:
The powerful quilts of Harriet Powers (1837-1910), a former Athens, Georgia slave, continue to capture our imagination today. Her two-known creations, the Bible Quilt and the Pictorial Quilt, have independently survived since stitched more than a century ago. Over the years, thousands of museum visitors to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston have stood transfixed viewing her artwork.

Powers' two quilts are arguably the most well-known and cited coverings in American quilt history. But, until today, no one has told the entire, dramatic story of how these two quilts, one of which initially sold for $5, were coveted, cared for, and cherished for decades in private homes before emerging as priceless, national treasures.

This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers' Bible Quilt and Other Pieces brings to light new, exciting facts - many never before published: complete exhibition history for both known quilts; proof Harriet Powers was a literate, award-winning quilter, who stitched at least five quilts and promoted her own artwork; profiles of the two nineteenth century women who sought to purchase the Bible Quilt; profiles of the three men who once owned the Pictorial Quilt; unveiling of a young artist who embellished the Pictorial Quilt; and the name of the person who first made the connection in the twentieth century that Harriet Powers stitched both quilts.

This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers' Bible Quilt and Other Pieces is the most comprehensive resource guide on this influential African American quilter. The book includes nearly 200 bibliographic references, most annotative, including books, exhibition catalogs, newspapers, plays, poetry, interactive map and more. For the first time ever, readers are provided with clues and encouraged to search for Harriet Powers' lost 1882 Lord's Supper Quilt.

This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers' Bible Quilt and Other Pieces is written by Kyra E. Hicks, a quilter whose story quilts have appeared in over forty group exhibitions in places such as the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY, the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the American Folk Art Museum in NY. Hicks is the author of Black Threads: An African American Quilting Sourcebook and Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria. She lives in Arlington, Virginia.

North Carolina Quilts [Paperback] Review

North Carolina Quilts [Paperback]I checked this book out of the Cashiers, North Carolina Library and spenta week browsing it. It has many fascinating color plates of NorthCarolina's historical quilts. There is an early embroidered farm scenequilt that is particularly spectacular and worthy of reproduction. Thereare also many black and white vintage photos of North Carolina's quiltersin period dress. I spent almost as much time looking at the vintageclothing photographs and the names of the women as I did the photos of thequilts. This is not a "how to quilt" book, but I think the photos and historical information in this volume would be beneficial to anyoneinterested in primary source research in vintage clothing and quilts ofsouthern origin.

Product Description:
This magnificent volume features color photographs of more than 100 quilts crafted in North Carolina between the early nineteenth century and 1976.Included are chintz applique quilts, intricately pieced and appliqued quilts, crazy quilts, and examples of ingenious thrift in quilting with found and salvaged materials.
The quilts were chosen from more than 10,000 that owners brought to be recorded by the North Carolina Quilt Project during a series of statewide Quilt Documentation Days in 1985-86.Because the quilts are privately owned, many have never been seen publicly. The text presents the lives and times of the quiltmakers, accompanied by many vintage photographs from family collections.Whether these women made quilts to pass the time, warm their families, beautify their lives, or serve as symbols of love and togetherness, they used their fabric with uncommon artistry and craftsmanship.

Album Quilts of Ohio's Miami Valley (Ohio Quilt Series) [Paperback] Review

Album Quilts of Ohio's Miami Valley [Paperback]I have well over 100 quilt history books, this being one of my top 2 favorites. The detailed history behind the Miami Valley Quilts is second to none. The beautiful photos are plentiful. As I pondered over a black and white photo of the Eli Hoke quilt in another book,I wished I could just see a color photo of it. Forgetting that I had pre ordered this book, I received it the next day.If you love sampler/album quilts this book is sure to delight you. A few weeks ago I went to a local quilt show. I had no idea the author of this book would be there as well asMary's quilt (pictured on page55). I was certainly thrilled. These quilts are truly an important part of our quilt heritage and study of regional quilts unique to the Miami Valley in Ohio.As you study over the quilts in this book you too will be able to spot a true Miami Valley quilt. There are uniquemotifs in these quilts that will trace the quilts back to the Miami Valley in Ohio.I highly recommend this book to anyone that truly loves quilt history.

Product Description:
From 1888 to 1918 a community of miami valley neighbors and relatives made album presentation quilts to celebrate life passages. Their sharing of designs and construction techniques led to the development of a distinctive regional quilt style that has never been duplicated in any other region of the state or country. Sue C. Cummings documents several unique characteristics of the Miami Valley album quilts, such as the applique′d Ohio Eagle and other design motifs. Nowhere else in the United States have so many similar eagles been documented in such a specific time period and in such a narrow locale. While other areas have their unique quilt patterns and traditions, Cummings's documentation and collection of this remarkable grouping is a landmark moment in quilting history. Album Quilts of Ohio's Miami Valley presents more than two dozen never-before-published color photographs of these folk art album quilts. Relying on thirty-five years of research, Cummings builds the case for each quilt from family genealogies and interviews, census records, local histories, and cemetery visits. Quilt historians, as well as genealogy and history buffs, will value the book as an inspired "how-to" guide for its impeccable research and for Cummings's ingenious tracking down of the clues in the sometimes hidden messages in the quilting. Beautifully illustrated and affordably priced in a paperback edition, this book is a valuable addition to the Ohio Quilt Series and will appeal to quilt researchers across the country who may discover a quilt from the Miami Valley of Ohio far from its place of origin.

Star-Studded Quilts: Sampler Blocks to Mix and Match [Paperback] Review

Star-Studded Quilts: Sampler Blocks to Mix and Match [Paperback]of star variations makes this book a great resource.

i gave it only four stars for a few reasons:most importantly to me, though others won't object, is the piecing techniques used.not only is averything made with squares and triangles, instead of using diaonds or parallelograms (sometimes the lack of that extra seam is a good thing), the directions are only for the 'folded corners' technique, which i hate because i can't stand wsting fabric (and i don't have trouble sewing triangles). so, i'll have to do some math (horrors) to adjust.

the second reason for not giving five stars is the uninspiring borders on all but two of the quilts. a little extra effort there would have made a big difference, and while it's easy enough to create or adapt a border of your own, i would have liked to have the author's ideas to study.

third reason is the very limited introductory instructions. this is not a book i'd give to a beginning quilter.fabric preparation is not mentioned at all, the piecing instructions definitely assume a level of experience along with the drawback i've already mentioned, and the actual quilting gets litle attention, with 'quilt as desired' the usual instruction, followed by a brief description of the quilting.

all that said, it's defintely a worthwhile addition to my library.the stars presented are not the run-of-the-mill stars, but a very interesting mix.i compared alex anderson's star book with this one, and bought this one.

the directions for the blocks are very well presented--there's a list of the patch sizes needed and how many.the illustrations are clear, and a good large size for easy reading while making a block. alternate color schemes are shown for four of the fourteen blocks.it would have been nice to have uncolored diagrams in addition to those presented, for designing other color variations.

however, for the variety of designs and the price, this is a great buy.

The Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook: Patterns, Projects and Inspirations [Paperback] Review

The Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook: Patterns, Projects and Inspirations [Paperback]Please pardon the review title. This book deserves it. It's interesting, clearly organized, and easy to use. You can read through it for enjoyment or ideas, or you can use the clear headings, the big color photos, or (if you're more of a words person than an images person) the very navigable table of contents or index, to find exactly the information you want in no time flat.

That's another nice thing about this book. It's jam-packed with information. It has a good history of sashiko. It has some historical info on different sashiko patterns. It has photos of sashiko through the ages. It has good explanations. It has loads of stitch patterns, all with full-color examples, reasonably idiot-proof directions, and suggestions for use so that you can design your own projects. It has a good variety of sample projects, plus a gorgeous gallery of what stitching experts have done with sashiko. It even has suggestions for what to use to get the right look if traditional Japanese tools and materials aren't available where you live.

If you want to learn sashiko and can only afford one book, this is the book to get. I'm very impressed with it.

Product Description:
Sashiko, the traditional Japanese technique of needlework quilting, uses simple running stitch to create beautifully decorative patterns ideal for patchwork, quilting and embroidery. Sashiko (pronounced shash-ko) means 'stab stitch' and refers to the small running stitch that is worked to build up distinctive decorative patterns, of which there are hundreds. The book begins by exploring the origins of the technique to strengthen clothes and to make them warmer. Getting Started describes everything you need to begin stitching, including selecting suitable fabrics and threads, marking out patterns on the fabric, as well as the stitching technique itself. Ten project chapters show how easy it is to use sashiko patterns to make beautiful items for the home. The sashiko patterns are described in step-by-step detail in the pattern library, showing you exactly how to achieve each individual pattern with ease. Finally a gallery of work by contemporary Japanese textile artists provides extra inspiration.

The Quilter's Guide to Amish Quilts [Paperback]The reason that most of my book reviews are 5 stars is because I usually check the book out of my library system before making a decision to purchase it; that or I've seen it in a shop and want to get a bargain on a used one.Since the morning I saw Joe Cunningham on Alex Anderson's TV quilt show, I've wished I had taped that show.He made everything look so straightforward and do-able, but I did not catch the whole show.I began looking for a how-to book on Amish quilts, even bought a few. Some of the books I looked at have limited instruction in the actual making of the quilts, or have directions for miniature ones, and some of them are just pretty pictures with the history of the Amish and their quilts. This book has excellent directions and photos for constructing the full size quilt tops from start to finish, and also includes photos and history of the Amish communities. An aspect of this book that is very important to me is that the user does not need to keep referring backward or forward to another chapter in following the steps in making the quilt top. Most quilt books have a very large general section in the front, then get to the specific construction per item, group the color photos of completed quilts in the center, and conclude with a section on tips and finishing. Those books are like reading a mystery with a dictionary in the other hand, disruptive to the flow of thought. They are probably alright for the experienced quilter, but not the beginner. Not so with this book. You get the beautiful quilt photos and the history right along with the very specific instructions for each one, then get to a short section each on how to cut templates, sew by hand or machine, and two pages on putting the quilt sandwich together. There is nothing in here that will tell you how to perfect your quilting stitch, but it will surely show you how to get to that point, and two different ways to finish the edges when the quilting is completed.
