301 Country Christmas Quilt Blocks [Hardcover] Review

301 Country Christmas Quilt Blocks [Hardcover]I guess I was looking for something different when I purchased 301 Country Christmas Quilt Blocks. What I was looking for was a quilt block book with Christmas themes. What was included in this book, was a large majority of reworked patterns, that could've suited any time of year except for the coloring. This book relied almost exclusively on appliqué to make the blocks look 'Christmasy.' As someone who likes to machine quilt and not appliqué, this was disappointing.
There were plenty of photos in this book, but the colors of the quilt blocks looked quite drab to me. To achieve the 'country' look they are sewn crookedly. Ughh.. Not my cup of tea. Also, I wanted to see more full-sized items, such as a bedspread or a throw. Most of the quilt examples were of single blocks, with no visual of how they would look in a larger-sized piece. Personally, I don't think they'd look all that great, as anything except a throw pillow. One crooked block is charming... Many crooked blocks = eyestrain.
While you might find some fun ideas in this book, I felt a tad let down by the contents. I've wanted to quilt a full-sized christmas quilt for a while, and nothing in this book caught my eye.

A Quilter's Diary: Written in Stitches (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

A Quilter's Diary: Written in Stitches [Paperback]As with all of Mimi Dietrich's books, 'A Quilter's Diary' is an attractive and well presented volume. The central concept of the book is the idea of making a 'quilt diary' about yourself or someone else - choosing quilt blocks whose names or patterns represent important mile stones in your life. There are photos of Mimi's own diary quilt and the quilts of some of her students as well as the patterns for 150 patchwork and applique blocks arranged according to various themes such as childhood, parents, true love, home, career and so on. The only reason I haven't given the book five stars is because 150 blocks don't really provide enough choice for a personal quilt, and readers will have to look further at other quilt block books - to be fair, there is a list of possibilites in the bibliography at the end, but it would have been nice to see more blocks presented as well as they are here.

Drafting and Design Simplified (Quilting Library) [Hardcover] Review

Drafting and Design Simplified [Hardcover]I'm new to quilting, but am already growing restless with just creating quilts with established block patterns. I read about this book in one of the quilting magazines I get (it was mentioned in an article) and while it doesn't seem to be available as a "new" book directly from Amazon, I did find several used book sellars that had copies. I haven't been able to clear my head of all the ideas that I have now! Don't let the title intimadate you! There is no complicated math involved in altering block designs to make them "you". Some graph paper and a ruler and your imagination and you're off and running. You'll be amazed at how different you can make an old block design look with just moving a few lines. Be adventurous! Get this book and have some fun!

Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: The Sara Millier Collection [Paperback] Review

Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: The Sara Millier Collection [Paperback]This book presents beautiful and clear color photographs of the Sara Miller Amish crib quilt collection, combined with the authors' detailed knowledge of the Amish quilting experience. Not having known much previously about Amish quilting, I was surprised by how beautiful and modern in appearance the quilts were. If you love to look at photos of interesting quilts, and are interested in American history, this is an outstanding book.

Product Description:
A rare collection of 90 antique Amish quilts for children is show-cased in this brilliantly colorful volume.
Few antique Amish crib quilts remain because they were put to hard use in large families which typically averaged seven children.
But Sara Miller of Kalona, Iowa, herself a member of the Old Order Amish, began building a collection of lovely antique crib quilts which she learned about as the proprietor of a fabric and quilt shop.
Thus began an unusual odyssey-Sara, who once disparaged the quilting tradition of her heritage, thinking it dull and drab, began to see its graphic beauty when outsiders became intent on owning Amish quilts.
The richly colorful quilts featured here come from Amish communities through the Midwestern United States.
In addition to 90 full-color plates of the exquisite quilts is interpretive commentary and documentation, plus three essays elaborating on the significance of the collection. Author Janneken Smucker descends from a line of quilters in the Amish-Mennonite community of Goshen, IN; Dr. Patricia Cox Crews is Director of the International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln, NE; Dr. Linda Welters is Professor of Textiles at the University of Rhode Island.
Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: The Sara Miller Collection is an unusual feast visually. The analyses that accompany the boldly beautiful images contribute scholarship to this intersection of art and the life of the Amish.

The Sampler Quilt Book [Paperback] Review

The Sampler Quilt Book [Paperback]This lovely book contains fully illustrated instructions on how to make a sampler quilt using twenty quilt blocks, each of which uses a different patchwork technique.

It's an excellent guide for the beginner or for someone who has made a couple of quilts and wants to learn more about different techniques. The book includes both hand and machine pieced techniques and the gallery photos show pictures of quilts made from beginners in Lynne Edwards's classes. This is a feature I like because not only does it show what the quilts look like when made by relatively experienced workers, it shows that the quilt can be made by someone who is new to quiltmaking and also gives you some idea of how the blocks look in different colourways.

This is a book that is enjoyable to look at as well as to work from and can be recommended to anyone looking for a clear, comprehensive manual of quiltmaking techniques.

Simple Quilts that Look Like a Million Bucks [Paperback] Review

Simple Quilts that Look Like a Million Bucks [Paperback]As a beginning quilter, I have purchased many books that were highly recommended. This one, I picked up because I was so attracted to the beautiful quilts. What a wonderful surprise to find that the author has such a winning style of writing and her instructions are detailed and easy to follow as well. The book lives up to its title-these quilts are simple and can be constructed fairly quickly using rotary cutting and strip piecing techniques. The designs are strongly graphic in style (no applique or simple squares) with several of the quilts variations on each other so you get a sense of how to make color choices or design your own variation.Half-square triangles are used creatively to form beautiful diagonals and sashing is used imaginatively to form beautiful star designs. The instructions are clear enough that I used this book to make the first quilt ever entirely by myself after having taken a sampler class. I would recommend more of a how-to beginner's book like Doak's "Your First Quilt Book" or "Quilts, Quilts, Quilts" by Nownes for basic information and then use this book to branch out. It's such a pleasure to look at and read that I refer to it again and again.Thank you, Nicole!

Color Harmony for Quilts: A Quiltmaker's Guide to Exploring Color [Paperback]Read the book through once, then go back and really read it!
Not only do the authors show us their own quilts, they have showcased some of the best known, and unknown quilters intenationally. Every quilt is broken down as to which colors, values and proportions were chosen by the quilter...even the amount of black used in each quilt is represented on a scale. If youdon't like the colors the quilter chose, they give you at least 3-4 other colorways and designs to choose from for every quilt shown! I only wish I had this information when I began quilting. Now I know I can break out of the box and create quilts that are really mine.
Thank you Weeks and Bill.

The key element in putting a quilt design together is colour, yet many people do not have a good grasp of colour theory - from what colours best complement others to what type of mood each colour evokes. Quilting expert Barbara Albright leads readers through a clear explanation of colour theory and how it relates to quilting, complete with tips on how to combine the right colours to get the look you want. From there, she presents 15 colour adjectives chosen to represent different moods - whether dynamic, romantic or natural - and illustrates each with two actual quilt patterns that best illustrate each colour concept, along with 8 colour variations for each quilt. Covering the historical relevance as well as the patterns and techniques used for each quilt, Wright illustrates how variations in colour, size and placement affect the mood of the finished piece.

Water, Water, Everywhere! [CD-ROM] Review

Water, Water, Everywhere [CD-ROM]This CD-ROM may be the best SG pattern collection ever and infinitely better than a pattern book because you can color-fill, resize, and print through Glass Eye.My favorites are the numerous splendid seaside, riparian, and lakeside landscapes. The one thing I miss is a printed image sheet listing the pattern title. It would save some time scrolling through the thumbnails in Glass Eye.I printed the pages from Paned Expressions' website, but not all patterns on the disc are shown there. Also the colored images stored on the CD aren't the same as on the Paned Expressions website. The former are flat color-filled images, while the latter have richer glass-like color variations.I find myself looking at the images from the website rather frequently to get glass ideas.

Product Description:
Charming bird designs were everywhere in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They graced linens, china, fabric, jewelry, greeting cards, feed sacks, and more, and inevitably found their way into embroidery kits and quilt patterns, too. From the front parlor, to the bedroom, to the kitchen, bird designs were indicative of the era. Susan McKelvey's much-loved collection of antique bird design items inspired the designs in 'Fancy Feathered Friends for Quilters.' Her aviary of exquisite birds, from the whimsical to the realistic, will enchant quilters of every skill level. Two dozen patterns feature popular bluebirds, purple martins, doves, and swallows, with blocks ranging in style from folk-art to Baltimore Album. Birds swoop in flight, flutter over branches, stand in classic profile, and snuggle together as lovebirds. Susan adds vines, leaves, flowers, branches, vases, and fruits to showcase each bird perfectly. To add to their versatility, patterns can be appliqued, embroidered, or painted. Mix and match elements to create your own unique designs. An extensive gallery of quilts beautifully showcases the designs, providing inspiration and options. Susan shares her expertise on how to use ink pens to create shading and outline details. A section on color shows how to use hue, value, and intensity to advantage. AUTHORBIO: Susan McKelvey caught the quilting bug in 1977 in a quilting class in Greensboro, North Carolina. Although quilting was not a part of her family heritage, it has become a part of her children's lives - they grew up under her design and dewing tables. In 1984, Susan wrote her first quilt book, "Color for Quilters", and many have followed. Through her company, Wallflower Designs, she has produced many patterns and tools for quilters. REVIEW: This wonderful book is crammed full of information, techniques and illustrations.

336 Ten-Minute Quilt Blocks: to Foundation-Piece, Quick-Piece, NoSew Applique, Stamp, Stencil, Paint & Embellish [Paperback] Review

336 Ten-Minute Quilt Blocks: to Foundation-Piece, Quick-Piece, NoSew Applique, Stamp, Stencil, Paint & Embellish [Paperback]I purchased this book, sight unseen, because I am a collector of quilt block books. I love reviewing the books and planning my next project, this book, claiming to have '336' quilt blocks seemed to be ideal. Well, I was wrong. Dead Wrong.
The layout of this book is TERRIBLE. It features six eye-poppingly colorful blocks per page which most of which are not pieced, but are merely DRAWN. There are illustrations which claim to be patterns but there are no actual measurements included. Sure, this looks good....But...The reader is left wondering how to put it all together.
I think it is disingenuous NOT to show completed pieced blocks in a quilt block book or measurements. I probably will try to put a couple of the "Tree" blocks together, but I think it will be challenging.
Recommended: No. A good 'idea' book, but not for careful piecers, and certainly NOT easy to complete in 10 minutes!

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs Volume Four: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback] Review

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs Volume Four: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback]I have been eagerly anticipating the publication of a new quilting book and was very excited to see it finally available. I already own all of the other books in this series (Volumes 1, 2 and 3) and have been waiting for months for the publication of this volume.

Mary Covey''s latest volume in her Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs series is technically not a book, but rather separate sheets packaged in a box. This "book" has just been published by Martingale and Company and it promises to be as wonderful as the previous 3 volumes.

You may ask why I like these designs so much. Well, there are several reasons. I like the fact that these are continuous line designs. I am a 'hurry up' kind of gal and like to get things done quickly, before I lose interest, so... continuous line quilting designs are my favourite motifs to work with. I don't have to stop, re-position and start quilting again.

Now, sometimes you may want to do blocks separately. If this is the case, Mary has an answer for this too. For each continuous line design in the book, there is also a block design in various sizes. That's great, but what is even better is that she also provides corner triangles to match, so you're covered no matter where you want to quilt. Oh, did I mention that her border designs include turning the corner, so you are able to keep right on going up the side of your quilt without having to turn and match motifs? Yes, Mary has thought of everything.

Sometimes I have trouble determining where to start and how to follow a continuous line motif. Again, Mary comes to my rescue. She includes a 'start' point and has arrows and numbers for you to follow so you don't get confused stitching the patterns.

Another feature that I like in this series is that each design is on its own page. The pages open up and the border motif, with the turning corner and side repeat, are there. This is easier, and more accurate, to use than trying to trace a quilting design from a book.

Best of all is Mary''s choice of designs. I find her motifs easy enough for a beginner, yet interesting enough, and with enough variety, to complement any project.
