World Of Amish Quilts [Paperback] Review

World Of Amish Quilts [Paperback]I ordered this book as part of my mother's Christmas present. In all fairness, the information about the book did not indicate that it included templates, so I really couldn't deduct any stars for that. I just presumed it included the templates. The pictures are truly beautiful as are the quilts. Mom's pretty smart, so she'll figure out the pattens. I read Beverly Lewis's novels about the Amish, so seeing some of the patterns she has mentioned in her books was great.I even learned what Shoo-fly pie is.

Amish Wall Quilts: 15 Brilliant and Beautiful Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Amish Wall Quilts: 15 Brilliant and Beautiful Quilts [Paperback]Rachel Pellman is a Mennonite dealer in amish quilts and she gives a very dutiful account of the Amish lifestyle as a n introduction. She then goes into the quilts breaking them up into geographic location and laying out the colour, piecework patterns and then quilting motifs for you to make an authentic Amish legacy wall-hanging quillt.
I have another one of Pellman's books and the big difference here is one of course the size, most are 47x47 inches and two the use of colour. Most of Pellman's books are black and white but this one is in full colour which is rather funny because once you see these quilts in colour you realise why the cheaper black and white can be used. But still seeing the colour spectrum as the Amish use it is very helpful and cannot be discounted. It's a good reference there just on the colour motifs and how to build or identify an Authentic Amish quilt (Center diamond should be in what colours and what quilting style for example).
Because everything is in the authentic mode, Pellman does not mention anything about machine piecing or quilting, but then you should have Hargreave's book, the definitive source, so you'll never have to care. The instructions are fine, I used them to make 2 quilts, but in the end it's rather plain being Amish all the time (remember no patterns :-).
Still it seems to be comprehensive and answer all of your questions except that I think it should have had some of the quilts as samples so we could see how the various pieces do fit together and look. It's a workmanlike book, not very inspired.

Amish Patterns for Machine Quilting (Dover Needlework Series) [Paperback] Review

Amish Patterns for Machine Quilting [Paperback]A useful tool for the machine quilting library. There are about 50 templates including very basic, simple designs, plus flowers (lots and lots of them), baskets, stars, leaves, hearts, and combinations. Each templateis shown on one page along with a diagram showing arrows of how to sew thedesign with only one starting point. Some designs do require multiplestarting points but many are single-line (although much turning) designs. Some corner designs are shown and some attention is given to patterns thatturn a corner. About half the patterns are the kind that might be used in aquilt block (not continuous border-type designs), such as tulips, stars, orbaskets. I was looking more for new continuous-line, border-type patternsand did not see much new in that area. One page provides a detailed diagramshowing how to quilt feathers. Being more of a beginner-level, self-taughtquilter, the feathers always looked too difficult to me. But now I seeclearly how to proceed and might actually try this design!

How to Make an Amish Quilt: More Than 80 Beautiful Patterns from the Quilting Heartland of America [Hardcover] Review

How to Make an Amish Quilt: More Than 80 Beautiful Patterns from the Quilting Heartland of America [Hardcover]I recommend this book to any experienced or inexperienced quilter--especially those who are interested in the Amish people. It has excellent, easy to follow patterns that are all about the same size, and itincludes some beautiful quilting designs that are also easy to follow andeasy to use. The ideas for color schemes and traditional Amish patterns arevery useful. I especially liked the way pictures were included in order toillustrate the origins of certain quilt designs. For instance, a picture ofa barn window is included with the pattern that represents a barn window. Ifound the religious themes in the book, and in the quilts themselves, veryinteresting. I really enjoyed using this book, and I am very satisfied withthe quilt that I made using the patterns and designs provided in the book. This book is a helpful guide to quiltmaking, and the cultural informationit includes is a very interesting supplement to anyone interested in quilthistory or Christianity.

Amish Quilt Patterns [Paperback] Review

Amish Quilt Patterns [Paperback]I bought this book because the patterns looked amazing. While they are very good, and can be used at all skill levels, I'm not pleased with the pattern measurements.

I've now made several quilts from the patterns, following each exactly. My latest turned out to be well over 20 inches wider than it should have. Some of the math appears to be incorrect.

That being said, the patterns ARE useful, and the color suggestions are great - just be prepared to modify your quilt while you're working on the top if you have strict measurements in mind.
