Stitched with Love: A Mother's Quilting Legacy; with CD-ROM [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Stitched with Love: A Mother's Quilting Legacy; with CD-ROM [Paperback]Here are some excerpts from my review of this book. You can see the complete review on the Quilter's Review website.
"...'Stitched With Love' includes clear how-to instructions and recipes. Not only do you see photos of quilts, you see these cute quilts in rooms showing the other projects included in this book. The beautiful double-page photos by Mark Packo make you think you are looking at a decorating magazine instead of a quilting book...."
"Robyn's easy applique patterns look real nice in her vintage fabrics, but I would like to make the quilts in bright colors for baby shower gifts. She anticipated this by including a nursery brights palette along with a country colors palette and a contemporary fabrics palette.
"There's also a teaching video on the CD-ROM, in which Robyn shows her method of needle-turn applique step by step. The best part of this video is that each step is a separate mini-video, making it easy to repeatedly watch just the pieces on which you need clarification...."

Sizzle 'n Pop: Six Strip-Pieced Quilt Patterns Using Bali Pops [Paperback] Review

Sizzle 'n Pop: Six Strip-Pieced Quilt Patterns Using Bali Pops [Paperback]I have been construction the quilt on the cover, Clerestory Window.I have run into several problems.First, I have had to buy a LOT more fabric than she lists.Second, there are problems with the lists of cuts of fabric to use for each section: her color names ("medium brown" versus "brown") are not consistent. And with there being 3-4 shades of each color being used, this is VERY important. Her instructions on how to piece the quilt together are very lacking.I've made it through sections A and C easily enough by working with the picture of the actual quilt, but I do not look forward to Section D (the upper right side of the quilt).Unless you are an expert quilter who needs little instruction, I do not recommend this book.

Product Description:
Clerestory Window is for those of you who want to spend some time creating more of an art quilt. Simple techniques, with thought to choosing fabrics, values and sewing angles --result is a gorgeous heirloom quilt. Includes a tips page for ideas and techniques. Hollyhocks is for beginners and uses two versions of the same block. Even the setting triangles are easy! Great for a weekend project or for a retreat. In the Courtyard at Dawn is beginner to Intermediate level, using 3 different blocks (one is a twist) and is set on point so takes a little more time to sew. French Roast is beginner level and great for retreats or a weekend project. Three different blocks cause the interlocking weave, and the piano keys border is the perfect (and fast) ending. Trellis provides a basic repeat block pattern. Using two different blocks, you can whip this one out. No worries about fabric placement, either, as it is all very simple and very clear. An ideal weekend or retreat project. Stars and Garters uses repeat blocks and pieced sashing to make this quilt a lot simpler than it looks. The challenge is your color placement so use a design wall for ultimate success!

336 Ten-Minute Quilt Blocks: to Foundation-Piece, Quick-Piece, NoSew Applique, Stamp, Stencil, Paint & Embellish [Paperback] Review

336 Ten-Minute Quilt Blocks: to Foundation-Piece, Quick-Piece, NoSew Applique, Stamp, Stencil, Paint & Embellish [Paperback]I purchased this book, sight unseen, because I am a collector of quilt block books. I love reviewing the books and planning my next project, this book, claiming to have '336' quilt blocks seemed to be ideal. Well, I was wrong. Dead Wrong.
The layout of this book is TERRIBLE. It features six eye-poppingly colorful blocks per page which most of which are not pieced, but are merely DRAWN. There are illustrations which claim to be patterns but there are no actual measurements included. Sure, this looks good....But...The reader is left wondering how to put it all together.
I think it is disingenuous NOT to show completed pieced blocks in a quilt block book or measurements. I probably will try to put a couple of the "Tree" blocks together, but I think it will be challenging.
Recommended: No. A good 'idea' book, but not for careful piecers, and certainly NOT easy to complete in 10 minutes!

Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks [Spiral-bound] Review

Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks [Spiral-bound]Better Homes and Garden books have sure improved since I became disenchanted with them in the 80's.And this is an excellent book no matter if you are a beginner or more accomplished at quilting. It is in an easy to use large spiral book form which makes laying it open as you work on one of the quilts or refer to a procedure for making quilting easier much easier.
It is laid out in a decades genre, where 1830-1860, 0n into 1920-1950 and borders are discussed in excellent detail with clear photos and exact size templates you can copy and use. Since I am fond of the Sunbonnet Sue (page 168) quilt my Grandma Katie made for my bed and dolls cradle I wanted to learn how to make one myself.
I make quilts but they are self designed appliqué types and I wanted to discover the old quilt arts. Although the crazy quilts shown (page 104) come close to what I do.
I personally don't know anyone who wouldn't find this excellent book helpful and being well used.Everytime I start to put the book away I realize that I need it out since I am always doing some type of quilt work....

Knockout Blocks and Sampler Quilts [Paperback] Review

Knockout Blocks and Sampler Quilts [Paperback]I am impressed with this book and a little dissapointed. The book is filled with stars that look different and very neat. Also, the settings are wonderful and something you don't see everyday. The things I didn't like were the pictures of the quilts. The quilts are not real quilts but filled in with color. I guess I get more inspired by the real thing. And these quilts would take an exceptional amount of time to make. I didn't care for the layout of the directions either. I am glad that I purchased it for the different ideas.

Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts [Paperback]with lots of applications.

there are a lot of examples of kay nichols' one fabric quilts that show the possiblities of her technique, but, of course, the idea can be used in quilts with more than one fabric.

she shows how clever piecing can expand the use of all those gorqeous border stripe fabrics. the results are surprising and beautiful. some very precise quilters might not be completely satisfied with the way patterns can meet at the miters without more planning than the author suggests, but this technique can result in a very lovely, reasonably easy quilt.

the quilts in the book range from the romantic to the funky. the photographs and digrams are very clear. the instructions are clear and detailed, though i wouldn't suggest this for a beginner. some experience with piecing is necessary. only general suggestions for quilting and binding the finished top are given, which is fine with me, as this is a book on piecing technique. more information on finishing a quilt is available in many other books.

this book definitely belongs in a quilter's library--not just for the one fabric quilts presented, but as an inspiration to try the technique on other types of prints and include it in multi-fabric quilts.

The United States Patchwork Pattern Book [Paperback] Review

The United States Patchwork Pattern Book [Paperback]I purchased this book to assist me in making better quilt blocks. However, I was very disappointed that block measurements were NOT given. Block patterns were supposed to be transferred to fabric, but did not include the measurements of each section. This was frustrating if you are a careful piecer and want to make sure each block is the correct size and don't like to trace. Instead, the piecer is forced to trace every section, which isn't practical for larger-sized quilts.
The lack of block dimensions made this book frustrating for me.I would recommend it only for people who like to trace, and don't mind the extra chore of photocopying the patterns, adding seam allowances etcetera before getting started.

Jelly Roll Quilts & More [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Jelly Roll Quilts & More [Paperback]This book offers a different approach than many of those currently out there on the market, and I found it to be a refreshing change. It reads a little bit like a blog & goes in a similar (but not identical) personal/chatty direction that a famously exuberant male quilter used in his magazine. But it's all Kimberly Einmo. Her unique voice comes across loud and clear. There are tons of us out here who really respond to that. Even my totally nonquilter, non-artistic-in-any-way-shape-or-form sister was impressed. She said that looking through the book gave her more of a sense of what I go through to assemble a quilt, but in a way that made sense even to her. And she liked the recipe for Nuts & Bolts!

I think many quilters are looking for this type of approach to quilting, and Ms. Einmo is "a right person at the right time" to help the process along. If I were a brand new quilter (I'm probably "intermediate"), I would not be intimidated by the book. I'd be encouraged to try some of the quilts, feeling that, as the author says in her introduction, that I had a friend who knew what she was doing right by my side as I worked.

The book appeals to more experienced quilters as well. I'd be willing to bet those quilters will love the quilt designs and be able to find tips that will make their quilting life easier and their quilty outlook refreshed. The fact that the quilt designs don't look "dumbed down" because they employ pre-cuts is huge. I can see an experienced quilter enjoying the simplicity of using pre-cuts, but also enjoying the fact that the resulting quilts don't LOOK simplistic.

Although you don't need to use the tools recommended by the author (a triangle/flying geese ruler and a ruler designed especially for pre-cuts), they are very helpful, making the subcuts so much easier. One of the other many thoughtful touches is that directions are also provided for those who want to use fabric from their stash instead of (or in addition to) the pre-cuts.

Useful book, fresh approach, great tips, very nice designs and impeccable, well thought out directions.Buy it and enjoy!

Grandmother's Garden Quilt (Quilt in a Day) [Spiral-bound] Review

Grandmother's Garden Quilt [Spiral-bound]I was delighted to find this book.for years I have admired quilts made with 3-D flowers, but feared that they were too difficult of a challenge to take on.Burns and Knoechel have provided me with an easy-to-follow guide to constructing these flowers--and, yes, I have been able to actually make several of them (as samples) in a short time.
Besides the pattern for the main quilt, the book provides detailed instructions for two other projects and photos of others that provide inspiration to use the included patterns as a springboard for original applications of their designs.I found all of the instructions to be very thorough...and very easy to follow. The authors have kindly provided color photographs to "show" as well as "tell" through the applique process.
I would recommend this book to any quilter, from beginner to advanced, for its combination of technical instruction, quilt history and imagination stimulation.
