Quilting Block & Pattern-a-Day 2007 Day-to-Day Calendar [Calendar] Review

Quilting Block & Pattern-a-Day 2007 Day-to-Day Calendar [Calendar]I purchased this product last year, and while I enjoyed many of the patterns, I disliked having the loose leaves floating around cluttering up my space. I think the design would be better if the calendar were flippable on a ring for archiving, otherwise the pattern pieces tend to get rumpled and miss-placed.

Many of the patterns were cute though. Although I admit, I used it more for the patterns than as a calendar.

Lap Quilting With Georgia Bonesteel [Paperback] Review

Lap Quilting With Georgia Bonesteel [Paperback]I love Georgia's books and have been using them for years.I am not interested in creating a few intricate artsy masterpieces, but, rather many beautiful, fun, useful quilts.Georgia's books are filled with ideas to make that happen.I used to hit the library looking for Georgia's books when inspiration was needed. Finally, I realized these were books I well worth owning.Whether you lap quilt a block at a time (and each book in the series gives great instructions for this) or quilt after piecing the entire top, these books will provide more ideas and direction than you can imagine.

Feathered Friends: 18 Paper-Pieced Blocks for Bird Lovers [Paperback] Review

Feathered Friends: 18 Paper-Pieced Blocks for Bird Lovers [Paperback]Paper piecing is not my favorite type of quilting mostly due to my dislike of the fabric waste. However, this book has excellent patterns / projects for birds that I think those who don't like to applique or want a faster way to achieve these designs will truly enjoy.Directions are easily understood and implemented.TIPS:(1) If you are new to paper piecing, try using BATIK fabrics that have no right or wrong side. This helps you to avoid using "Mr. Ripper" when you place your fabric the wrong way against the paper piecing pattern. (2) Use a two-ply thread like Aurifil Mako 50 wt (Aurifil 50 wt Taupe is my color preference for all piecing) and a thinner needle 75/11 or 70/10 sharps. These help eliminate bulk especially with the very small pieces.

Color Design in Patchwork: With Plastic Templates for 10 Pairs of Blocks (Dover Needlework Series) [Paperback] Review

Color Design in Patchwork: With Plastic Templates for 10 Pairs of Blocks [Paperback]Just got this book four days ago and can hardly wait to start making puzzle quilts. This book really turned my mind around and pointed my brain in a whole new direction. The patterns are totally simple and clear. The concept is startling. EX: Block #1A is solid triangles. Block#1B is also solid triangles but totally different in appearance due to the use of Light, Medium, and Dark colors. Nothing complicated except the results. This book has changed the way I think.

A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs [Paperback] Review

A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs [Paperback]This is a beautiful book about appliqueing and their designs for Christmas. They cover everything from quilts, wall hangings to table runners, stockings and Christmas tree rounds. You can mix and match the ideas here and make everything you need for Christmas.
The nice parts are that the directions are complete for both hand piecing and machine (called fusible in the book) sewing & that most of the designs require small amounts (1/2 yard; 5/8 yard there) of fabric so if you have leftovers you can find places to use them here. Also nice is the ability to copy the designs for your own use.A nice present in itself.
The downside? You should be near a copier and have sharp scissors.
All in all, a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. It's a real joy to view and look at.I wish some of the designs were shown bigger in colour but it's a minor quibble.

Fantastic Fabric Folding: Innovative Quilting Projects [Paperback] Review

Fantastic Fabric Folding: Innovative Quilting Projects [Paperback]Compared to many quilting books, this one is easy to use and offers fresh ideas. It provides detailed step-by-step instructions with photographs. There are photos on almost every page--this makes the book more stimulatingthan many quilting books that rely on black and white diagrams anddrawings. In addition to the table of contents, the book offers a usefulindex and bibliography. With this book, even people who have never doneorigami (or used folding techniques) can add this method to their quilting. However, this may not be the book for those who want to make quilts thatlook traditionally Japanese. The book's kimono designs are very Japaneselooking, but the quilting arrangements are not typically Japanese. Forthose interested in making authentically Japanese looking quilts, I wouldrecommend "Honoring the Seasons" (1996) by Takako Onoyama. Still,"Fantastic Fabric Folding" is a great book for those who wouldlike to add some Japanese flavor and new designs to their quilts.

At Piece with Time: A Woman's Journey Stitched in Cloth [Paperback] Review

At Piece with Time: A Woman's Journey Stitched in Cloth [Paperback]If I was asked which book I would recommend as a great Christmas gift for a quilter, I would not hesitate to recommend the book titled At Peace with Time - a Woman's Journey Stitched in Cloth, written by Kristin C. Steiner & Diane C. Frankenberger. This absolutely beautiful book is published by C & T Publishing and is available at any good bookshop. (See link below)

The one thing that shines from the beginning to end in this book is its essential highlighting of the goodness of the human spirit, the wonderful fellowship of fellow stitchers that we enjoy, all tied up with a pinch of wisdom and a sprinkle of words from the gospels, and the awesome watercolors and drawings by Diane C. Frankenberger.

If you never make the quilt, blocks or other goodies displayed in this book, it is such a wonderful manuscript to read, that you will feel like you've been stitching. I was given this book when "doing time" in hospital. It was the most wonderful dose of medicine, every time I picked it up, I felt fully satisfied that I had enjoyed a quilting moment.

Apart from the full instructions for making their lovely quilt of pieced and appliquéd blocks, the book also includes instructions for creating a Travel Journal, A traveling Sewing Kit, a lovely baby quilt titled Ring Around the Rosy, a doll and doll quilt, a gorgeous pillow with a title of Profound Pillow and as a bonus, a number of yummy recipes and lots of sayings, quotes and simply inspiring words.

The Authors Kristin C. Steiner and Diane C. Frankenberger have given a great deal of thought to the layout of the book, keeping its integrity of providing simple pleasure throughout the whole book. The illustrations are extremely clear and concise and easy to understand. The cutting instructions are incredibly simply described, no chance of getting the wrong message here.

As mentioned previously, this is not necessarily a book that only a "doer" will enjoy. All of us go through cycles of getting quilting done, and then not getting quilting done. Sometimes our heart isn't in its right phase, or the family is demanding more of our time.

This book is a perfect solution to the "don't have time to stitch" syndrome that we all suffer from time to time. A few minutes spent pouring over this book; will give you the feeling of having stitched. I try to use the same theory when on a diet. I spend a bit of time looking through a recipe book with the hope that I'll feel like I've eaten!! (I wish!!). Go and have a look at this delightful creation. It's one of my all time favourites.

Sizzle 'n Pop: Six Strip-Pieced Quilt Patterns Using Bali Pops [Paperback] Review

Sizzle 'n Pop: Six Strip-Pieced Quilt Patterns Using Bali Pops [Paperback]I have been construction the quilt on the cover, Clerestory Window.I have run into several problems.First, I have had to buy a LOT more fabric than she lists.Second, there are problems with the lists of cuts of fabric to use for each section: her color names ("medium brown" versus "brown") are not consistent. And with there being 3-4 shades of each color being used, this is VERY important. Her instructions on how to piece the quilt together are very lacking.I've made it through sections A and C easily enough by working with the picture of the actual quilt, but I do not look forward to Section D (the upper right side of the quilt).Unless you are an expert quilter who needs little instruction, I do not recommend this book.

Product Description:
Clerestory Window is for those of you who want to spend some time creating more of an art quilt. Simple techniques, with thought to choosing fabrics, values and sewing angles --result is a gorgeous heirloom quilt. Includes a tips page for ideas and techniques. Hollyhocks is for beginners and uses two versions of the same block. Even the setting triangles are easy! Great for a weekend project or for a retreat. In the Courtyard at Dawn is beginner to Intermediate level, using 3 different blocks (one is a twist) and is set on point so takes a little more time to sew. French Roast is beginner level and great for retreats or a weekend project. Three different blocks cause the interlocking weave, and the piano keys border is the perfect (and fast) ending. Trellis provides a basic repeat block pattern. Using two different blocks, you can whip this one out. No worries about fabric placement, either, as it is all very simple and very clear. An ideal weekend or retreat project. Stars and Garters uses repeat blocks and pieced sashing to make this quilt a lot simpler than it looks. The challenge is your color placement so use a design wall for ultimate success!

Setting Solutions [Paperback] Review

Setting Solutions [Paperback]If you make quilt blocks, you want to own this book.Sharon will show you how to create your own quilts with blocks that are not matched in size or color and the results will be better than you would ever expect.   As I read through, marveling at her creativity, I kept wondering why she had such an endless supply of mismatched blocks of the month. She does it on purpose! She likes the challenge of starting with something and making it better, rather than making her own orderly and boring quilt from scratch.
There is no way to overstate how much you will get out of this book.Another recent book by Margaret Miller dealt with the same subject but her solutions were so much work that I doubt I would ever use them. This book contains easy, approachable solutions to problems all of us have faced. If you make blocks, you will want to have it in your library for endless inspiration.

Instant Bargello (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Instant Bargello [Paperback]I have always liked the Bargello pattern when I used it in needlepoint or plastic canvas patterns.I definitely do not like it in a quilt. This book shows picture quilts changed into the Bargello pattern. It makes them hard to look at, in my opinion, and difficult to see what the picture actually is.

The book itself has six pages on basic quilting. The patterns give the finished size and a color photo of the quilt.A materials and cutting list is provided.Assembly instructions follow these lists. There are no graphics to show what the written steps are talking about. There are no quilting suggestions and the only finishing instructions are lay the quilt top on batting and backing, baste and quilt. Not much help for a beginner.

There are six projects and a two photo gallery of other quilts. There is a short bio on the author.

This is not a book I would recommend purchasing unless you are extremely excited about the Bargello look and have enough quilting experience that you don't need finishing suggestions.

9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day [Paperback] Review

9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day [Paperback]My private stash is loaded with large-scale fabrics. I just can't seem to resist buying stunning African, Asian, Hawaiian, seasonal, juvenile, and floral fabrics. I loved them when I bought them and abhor the thought of cutting them into small pieces.

With Judy Sisneros' 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day, I can use these beautiful fabrics to make scrumptious quilts for my children and grandchildren. And because the projects are easy (not to mention fun) and fast, those numerous family members won't have to wait in line as long for "their" special quilt.

Every quilt in Sisneros' collection is a combination of solid pieces of fabric and Nine-Patch blocks (with the occasional Rail Fence block). The quilt patterns are beginner friendly but experienced quilters will have fun also. All the quilts consist of a focus fabric and a minimum of three companion fabrics.

If you want to piece a quilt in one day, 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day would be a good book to use as a guide or for actual patterns. The directions are clear, concise and easy-to-follow. The quilts are lovely patterns that everyone would love to have. I'm making Oriental Flight. It's set on point and I'm using some of the beautiful Asian cotton fabric I bought in various Asian countries.

Armchair Interviews says: Beginners or experienced quilters will love 9-Patch Pizzazz. It's a keeper for your quilt book library.

Great American Quilts, Book Nine [Paperback] Review

Great American Quilts, Book Nine [Paperback]I own the Great American Quilts books starting from 1987. They are among my most treasured books. I love these books because they include quilts from all over the country and from quilters of all different degrees of experience. My favorite part is seeing the photograph of the actual quilter (or quilters) and reading the history as to how they got involved in quilt making or what was the inspiration for their quilt or the history of the quilt's making. The photographs of the quilts are beautifully taken and color rich. Also included are the patterns for most of the quilts including the templates and fabric requirements. What could be more enjoyable than owning a book that captures the history and advances of quilt making? Truly a must have.

Everyday Folk Art: Hooked Rugs And Quilts To Make [Paperback] Review

Everyday Folk Art: Hooked Rugs And Quilts To Make [Paperback]I LOVE books that have a dual purpose and EVERYDAY FOLK ART does just that!If you are a quilter, buy this book and make the quilt, then hook a rug to go along with it.And, remember the reverse, if you are a hooker, buy this book, hook a rug and then make the quilt to go along with it.Either way, you will learn a new technique.AND, if you already do both crafts, the book will keep you busy for many days and nights to come.

There are eight patterns that range from stars to animals to patriotic themes to game themes to a Log Cabin and finally an Irish Chain. The quilts are made by piecing alone or with piecing and appliqué.There is even a easy technique for making a Log Cabin (not the pattern but the actual Log Cabin) that uses "ragged" fabric. The rugs are hooked to match the themes of the quilts. You could even use up all those scraps you hate to throw away as a quilter and make a "scatter" rug --- one that is just a maze of colors.

Each quilt pattern has a materials list, cutting instructions and then instructions for putting the quilt together, along with graphics to help explain what you are suppose to do.If special templates are needed, they are also included.A full color photo of the finish quilt is provided. For each rug, the same things are provided as for the quilts.

There are tips in special colored boxes throughout the book and each author gives a brief overview about the pattern. The chapters at the end of the book include ten pages of basic quilting how-to's, 16 pages of basic rug hooking how-to's and a page of resources in case you cannot locate any of the supplies you might need to create these wonderful folk art pieces. This sister duo sure has a knack for fabric arts.
