A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs [Paperback] Review

A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs [Paperback]This is a beautiful book about appliqueing and their designs for Christmas. They cover everything from quilts, wall hangings to table runners, stockings and Christmas tree rounds. You can mix and match the ideas here and make everything you need for Christmas.
The nice parts are that the directions are complete for both hand piecing and machine (called fusible in the book) sewing & that most of the designs require small amounts (1/2 yard; 5/8 yard there) of fabric so if you have leftovers you can find places to use them here. Also nice is the ability to copy the designs for your own use.A nice present in itself.
The downside? You should be near a copier and have sharp scissors.
All in all, a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. It's a real joy to view and look at.I wish some of the designs were shown bigger in colour but it's a minor quibble.

Fantastic Fabric Folding: Innovative Quilting Projects [Paperback] Review

Fantastic Fabric Folding: Innovative Quilting Projects [Paperback]Compared to many quilting books, this one is easy to use and offers fresh ideas. It provides detailed step-by-step instructions with photographs. There are photos on almost every page--this makes the book more stimulatingthan many quilting books that rely on black and white diagrams anddrawings. In addition to the table of contents, the book offers a usefulindex and bibliography. With this book, even people who have never doneorigami (or used folding techniques) can add this method to their quilting. However, this may not be the book for those who want to make quilts thatlook traditionally Japanese. The book's kimono designs are very Japaneselooking, but the quilting arrangements are not typically Japanese. Forthose interested in making authentically Japanese looking quilts, I wouldrecommend "Honoring the Seasons" (1996) by Takako Onoyama. Still,"Fantastic Fabric Folding" is a great book for those who wouldlike to add some Japanese flavor and new designs to their quilts.

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc! [Paperback] Review

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc [Paperback]This book has hundreds of design possibilities, all shown in grayscale diagrams. There are photographs of some of them made up, but for most of them you'll have to do your own color choices and placement. These blocks could be made up into bed-sized quilts, starting with large squares as building blocks, or into blocks to go into a quilt, or as a single smaller block as a wallhanging or other small quilt project. This is not for someone who needs handholding and precise step-by-step directions. But if you're confident in your own taste and able to make decisions for yourself as you go along, and can look at a block diagram and see how it should be sewn together, this offers you lots of options. All the blocks are made from simple units -- squares, four patches, "rail fence" units (two rectangles), and half-square triangles. The author gives you lots of possible ways to combine those units into quilt blocks of any size you choose, determined only by the size of square you start with. This is a book I'll return to again and again.

Product Description:

The latest trend in fabric is precut squares or rectangles. Layer Cakes from Moda are 10 inch squares. Sweet 16s from Maywood Studios are 9 inch x 11 inch rectangles. Marcus Brothers cuts their Spoonfuls into 8-1/2 inch squares. This book contains ideas for all these large squares. Or you can cut you own large squares. One Fat Quarter can be cut into four 8-1/2 inch squares. Making the designs even more flexible, these patterns will work for ANY SIZE SQUARE! The popular 5 inch charm packs will make a fun baby quilt size or table topper. Or maybe you have cut leftover fabrics from past projects into 4 inch or 6 inch squares (or any other uniform size). These patterns will work perfectly for those squares as well! You could even start with a 16 inch or 17 inch square and use one of these patterns to make a king size quilt. It just takes 36 squares of any size to make any or all of these quilts. This book contains instructions to make 238 quilts! All of the instructions are written for beginners. This book offers beginning quilters several benefits. The quilts are all made up of basic blocks. The fabric in the precut, prepackaged fabric bundles all match. The book describes several methods for organizing scrap quilts. Beginning quilters are introduced to the creative process of quilting. However, these quilts are not just for beginners. Experienced quilters can enjoy making a quick project as a gift or to experiment with new colors. This book takes quilters through four steps of basic quiltmaking. Step 1: Choose Your Pattern. Step 2: Organize Your Fabrics. Step 3: Sew Your Blocks Together. Step 4: Layout and Sew Your Quilt. Going through these steps involves quilters with the entire process of quilt making in a fun, simple way.Big Block Quilts contains patterns for 238 quilts with full color pictures of 21 of these patterns. See how similar patterns look in different colors, and see how the same fabrics look in different patterns. This book contains hundreds of ideas for using charm packs, layer cakes, sweet 16s, spoonfuls, fat quarters, and your personal stash!

Blendable Curves: Stack, Slice & Sew Unique Quilts in a Weekend [Paperback] Review

Blendable Curves: Stack, Slice & Sew Unique Quilts in a Weekend [Paperback]I just got to talk to Peggy and now I know why I love her book - Blendable Curves. She takes basic blocks that are simple for any quilter - like nine-patches - and cuts them in half with a free form curve.THEN, she has you sew the curved sides back together to complete the block.

I know what you're thinking - I don't sew curves.Well I didn't either, until now - because once you've sewn the curve, the block is re-sized!Nothing has to match - shoot, it's not SUPPOSED to match - so this is the perfect beginner project. You can just have fun with color and design. And while you're at it, you can take all of those blocks that WEREN'T perfect - and transform them into works of art!

Our local guild just hosted a nine-patch exchange. As you know, not all seam allowances are created equal, so the blocks are not all exactly the same size.Peggy has the perfect solution. In "A Leap of Faith" she used the "blended nines" to create a breathtaking backdrop for an applique quilt.

Pleasantville is my favorite quilt in the book because it is very graphic - reds, whites and blacks - or if you are in Buckeye country, we swear it reads as Scarlet and Gray! But, for those of you who cheer for the wrong team, this quilt would work just as well in other school colors.

In this particular quilt, Peggy inserted red piping between the curved sides of the black and white log cabins. It gives the whole quilt an "art deco" look with a very masculine feel - and as a mother of four boys, I love finding a quilt that the men in my life appreciate!

For those of you who loved Piping Hot Curves by Susan Cleveland, this is a natural progression.

Peggy describes this as a transitional book.First, beginning students can learn to make the traditional blocks - half-square triangles, nine-patches, quarter-square triangles, etc. There is no pressure because if their points don't match, they will learn how to "curve them up" in the next class! She has totally eliminated the intimidation factor!

Once the students have learned the basics, they can bring those blocks to a "Blendable Curves" class and let their imagination soar! Now that they have learned the rules - Peggy can promptly show you how to break them - with absolutely stunning results!

And, PLEASE take the time to read her instructions!!! I know it is more fun to skip to the projects, but this woman knows what she is doing.I especially like her explanation about how to press seams.AND, she actually gives instructions - with graphics - on how to bind a quilt the right way!Keep this book by your machine so you can pull it out every time you finish a project - you'll be glad you did!

Once you have explored her techniques, you will want to play with all of those loose blocks in your stash left over from other projects.Remember, the blocks are resized after the sewing is complete so you are free to mix and match to your heart's content! The skies the limit!

Material Obsession: Modern Quilts with Traditional Roots [Paperback]First of all, I just want to say that it is a wonderful book, with lots of lovely and inspiring text and pictures. But I have to say I was a bit disappointed when I realised that it was exactly the same book as 'Material Obsession - Contemporary quilt designs', which I bought a year ago. American Jane's Quilts For All Seasons: And Some for No Reason (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

American Jane's Quilts For All Seasons: And Some for No Reason [Paperback]I love Sandy Klopp's free-spirited mix of colors, as well as her vintage style. She offers up a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced projects to appeal to a range of quilters' abilities. And while I would love to have the quilt that's featured on the cover, I plan to start with some of the easy applique projects:the adorable Scottie quilt and the heart quilt.

In collecting fabrics for my projects, I'm already wishing that her directions for fabric amounts were easier for a beginner to cope with. For example, directions to assemble 3 yards total of assorted fabrics doesn't really tell you what size of cut to get.A quilter with intermediate or advanced skills, of course, can certainly figure it out by measuring the size of the templates.Someone just starting out might not think of it.

Overall, however, the book is appealing from start to finish.Whether you actually make any of the projects or not, it's great eye-candy for armchair enjoyment.

Quiltmaking by Hand: Simple Stitches, Exquisite Quilts [Paperback] Review

Quiltmaking by Hand: Simple Stitches, Exquisite Quilts [Paperback]I am truly inspired by this book. I made my first couple of quilts by hand, but I didn't feel that I was a "real" quilter until I had bought the sewing machine. All the books and magazines seemed to be completely geared up to machime piecing and so I felt that hand piecing was seen as quaint and outdated. So it was a revalation to find out that Jinny Beyer, a reknown quilter and teacher whose quilts I had always admired, made them ALL by hand! Her explanation of how quilts can be advanced piece by piece in "found" moments has made me think that perhaps handpiecing is THE way to quilt for busy women today.
Her directions and detailed photographs make it easy for anyone who has never picked up needle and thread and her enthusiasm, on every page of the book, will build your confidence. Also, the photographs of her lovely silver needlework accessories and the insets about quilting history add to the inspiration.
If you think you haven't got time to hand piece, read this and think again.

The quilting stitch is simply and clearly explained, and detailed photographs illustrate how neat, even lines of stitching are achieved.
