The Quilter's Album of Blocks and Borders : More than 750 Geometric Designs Illustrated and Categorized for Easy Identification and Drafting [Paperback] Review

The Quilter's Album of Blocks and Borders : More than 750 Geometric Designs Illustrated and Categorized for Easy Identification and Drafting [Paperback]The first was Ruby McKim's.
I made a lot of single blocks out of this book, I think friends still have denim--lots of variations on indigo--pillows made at the time.
I learned how to analyze a block, draft the pattern.
This book won't help you with the nuts and bolts of sewing.
It won't help you visualize a whole quilt. But I expect that this book still holds up as a block book. Everyone needs at least one. After I worked with it for a while I forever lost my shyness about drafting patterns in almost any size, three inches to 25.

Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks [Spiral-bound] Review

Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks [Spiral-bound]Better Homes and Garden books have sure improved since I became disenchanted with them in the 80's.And this is an excellent book no matter if you are a beginner or more accomplished at quilting. It is in an easy to use large spiral book form which makes laying it open as you work on one of the quilts or refer to a procedure for making quilting easier much easier.
It is laid out in a decades genre, where 1830-1860, 0n into 1920-1950 and borders are discussed in excellent detail with clear photos and exact size templates you can copy and use. Since I am fond of the Sunbonnet Sue (page 168) quilt my Grandma Katie made for my bed and dolls cradle I wanted to learn how to make one myself.
I make quilts but they are self designed appliqué types and I wanted to discover the old quilt arts. Although the crazy quilts shown (page 104) come close to what I do.
I personally don't know anyone who wouldn't find this excellent book helpful and being well used.Everytime I start to put the book away I realize that I need it out since I am always doing some type of quilt work....

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc! [Paperback] Review

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc [Paperback]This book has hundreds of design possibilities, all shown in grayscale diagrams. There are photographs of some of them made up, but for most of them you'll have to do your own color choices and placement. These blocks could be made up into bed-sized quilts, starting with large squares as building blocks, or into blocks to go into a quilt, or as a single smaller block as a wallhanging or other small quilt project. This is not for someone who needs handholding and precise step-by-step directions. But if you're confident in your own taste and able to make decisions for yourself as you go along, and can look at a block diagram and see how it should be sewn together, this offers you lots of options. All the blocks are made from simple units -- squares, four patches, "rail fence" units (two rectangles), and half-square triangles. The author gives you lots of possible ways to combine those units into quilt blocks of any size you choose, determined only by the size of square you start with. This is a book I'll return to again and again.

Product Description:

The latest trend in fabric is precut squares or rectangles. Layer Cakes from Moda are 10 inch squares. Sweet 16s from Maywood Studios are 9 inch x 11 inch rectangles. Marcus Brothers cuts their Spoonfuls into 8-1/2 inch squares. This book contains ideas for all these large squares. Or you can cut you own large squares. One Fat Quarter can be cut into four 8-1/2 inch squares. Making the designs even more flexible, these patterns will work for ANY SIZE SQUARE! The popular 5 inch charm packs will make a fun baby quilt size or table topper. Or maybe you have cut leftover fabrics from past projects into 4 inch or 6 inch squares (or any other uniform size). These patterns will work perfectly for those squares as well! You could even start with a 16 inch or 17 inch square and use one of these patterns to make a king size quilt. It just takes 36 squares of any size to make any or all of these quilts. This book contains instructions to make 238 quilts! All of the instructions are written for beginners. This book offers beginning quilters several benefits. The quilts are all made up of basic blocks. The fabric in the precut, prepackaged fabric bundles all match. The book describes several methods for organizing scrap quilts. Beginning quilters are introduced to the creative process of quilting. However, these quilts are not just for beginners. Experienced quilters can enjoy making a quick project as a gift or to experiment with new colors. This book takes quilters through four steps of basic quiltmaking. Step 1: Choose Your Pattern. Step 2: Organize Your Fabrics. Step 3: Sew Your Blocks Together. Step 4: Layout and Sew Your Quilt. Going through these steps involves quilters with the entire process of quilt making in a fun, simple way.Big Block Quilts contains patterns for 238 quilts with full color pictures of 21 of these patterns. See how similar patterns look in different colors, and see how the same fabrics look in different patterns. This book contains hundreds of ideas for using charm packs, layer cakes, sweet 16s, spoonfuls, fat quarters, and your personal stash!

America's Best Quilting Projects: Star Quilts (A Rodale quilt book) [Hardcover] Review

America's Best Quilting Projects: Star Quilts [Hardcover]... and you have a thing of beauty when you're done!
I was lucky enough to scoop this book up in our public library. It was the beauty of the cover that attracted me.I had never quilted before, but had wanted to learn how.I knew this was not a how-to book, but was aimed at an audiencewho had more experience than I.It assumes you have some knowledge ofterms and techniques, like strip piecing, but a short beginner's class willbring you up to speed fast enough!I have never been disappointed whenbuying a book by Liz Porter and Marianne Fons. The instructions are clearand concise, and you can avoid some pitfalls if you follow the instructionsliterally, as in assembling star pieces in the same order as they do - itmakes it lie flat and you can ease the seams together better.
I alsolike the little tidbits they throw in.They're a wonderful team and theywrite wonderful books.I did my first strip-pieced Starburst quilt in aclass that made alot more progress thanI did and I used this book tofinish the project. It's a great addition to any home quilting library.

Beautiful Foundation-Pieced Quilt Blocks [Paperback] Review

Beautiful Foundation-Pieced Quilt Blocks [Paperback]Hiney's book has absolutely beautiful samples of foundation-pieced blocks that I have not found anywhere else. The quilt and wall-hanging examples that are in the book are beautifully done, and most could easily be done bysomeone who has had some experience foundation piecing. However, for thosepeople who like to pick a quilt out of a book and make it exactly, this mayor may not be the book for you. About a third to half of the blocks areonly shown in singles (not in an actual quilt), so you may have toexperiment a bit with them in order to find how they will look whenassembled. If you are a quilter who likes to make up her own designs, butneeds a little help designing the basic blocks, this book is a must have!
