Stitched with Love: A Mother's Quilting Legacy; with CD-ROM [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Stitched with Love: A Mother's Quilting Legacy; with CD-ROM [Paperback]Here are some excerpts from my review of this book. You can see the complete review on the Quilter's Review website.
"...'Stitched With Love' includes clear how-to instructions and recipes. Not only do you see photos of quilts, you see these cute quilts in rooms showing the other projects included in this book. The beautiful double-page photos by Mark Packo make you think you are looking at a decorating magazine instead of a quilting book...."
"Robyn's easy applique patterns look real nice in her vintage fabrics, but I would like to make the quilts in bright colors for baby shower gifts. She anticipated this by including a nursery brights palette along with a country colors palette and a contemporary fabrics palette.
"There's also a teaching video on the CD-ROM, in which Robyn shows her method of needle-turn applique step by step. The best part of this video is that each step is a separate mini-video, making it easy to repeatedly watch just the pieces on which you need clarification...."

Finish It with Alex Anderson: 6 Quilt Projects Choose the Perfect Border Options for Edges [Paperback] Review

Finish It with Alex Anderson: 6 Quilt Projects Choose the Perfect Border Options for Edges [Paperback]Whenever you begin to learn a new skill -- whether it's cooking, quilting, or computer programming -- the best asset to have is a friend standing next to you, showing you the details. ("No, move it more to the left!" or "The dough should feel like _this_.") Alas, we don't always have someone to call upon, so we turn to books written by experts. Often, they know their skill... but are imperfect at getting the point across.

That's not a problem here. "Finish It With Alex Anderson" is very much like having a friend standing at your side. While it includes 6 full quilt projects (they're nice, but not astonishing), the primary emphasis of this book is on -- as promised -- the steps in finishing a quilt, making good design choices for borders and other "edgy" issues.

I'm a rank beginner at quilting, and I've gotten confused over the stupidest things. For example, I know that it's easy to miter corners on the binding... once you know how. Most books give an arm wave to what's involved, as if you've seen it done and simply need a reminder. Alex Anderson's shows several different ways to bind a quilt, with so many pictures that I can't do it wrong. And, in fact, I didn't; my binding looks great, and I finally understand what I'd missed before.

Great book. This one won't get far from the sewing machine.

Your First Quilt Book (or it should be!) [Paperback] Review

Your First Quilt Book [Paperback]You too can read this book and feel like a quilting bee! I love this book because Carol Doak explains every stupid little detail you need to know inorder not to screw up big time withquilts. It's not easy to sew all thoselittle pieces together and have them come out symetrical. If you wack offthe excess with a rotary cutter, (which seems pretty fun at the time), theblock is the wrong size. Carol has a gentle and humorous voice and thisbook must be written at about the third grade level because even Iunderstand it. I like the black and white shaded diagrams because it'seasier to keep your colors straight if you use different color combinationsfor the same quilt. Best of all, there are simple projects in this bookthat are beautiful and truly suitable for a beginner. I made a variation ofthe simple stars quilt for my Mom for Christmas and she loves me again. Mydaughter has been whining for one of her own ever since she saw Grandma's.I ironed on wonderful antique photos of four generations of mothers anddaughters in the star centers--which made the quilt an instant family hit.As a result, Mom loves me second best of all the kids again, although sheprobably still loves my brother the best because he bought her the weedwacker she wanted for Christmas and she always liked him better anyway.
