Quilts for Rosie: Paper Piecing Patterns from the '40s [Paperback] Review

Quilts for Rosie: Paper Piecing Patterns from the '40s [Paperback]Everyone that truly loves to paper piece should have this book!It does what many other books try to do, but don't. These are blocks from the WWII era, and There are two sizes for each of the many patterns, along with a short history. (it tells how to change sizes also).I made the "Army Star" right after i got the book, and got many complements on it before it went in the mail for a block exchange.
It was worth every cent, and it is one of the few in my collection I can say that about.

Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs [Paperback]The floral designs in Jane Townswick's second Artful Appliqué book are beautiful, natural, and detailed. Never fear, Jane takes you step-by-step through her way of mastering this realism. While advising beginners to consult one of her previous books or another reference book for the basics of appliqué, she introduces many fantastic techniques to throw into your appliqué bag of tricks.

In this volume Jane introduces Scrapliqué, a technique for creating mosaic-like fabric compositions for your motifs without having to stitch tiny pieces together. There's also information on unit appliqué, where you can stitch an entire flower before stitching it to the background. Jane explains several advantages to this strategy.

The book has sections on color blending, free-form stems and branches, and a unique way of stitching sharp points. There's a gorgeous gallery of quilts and 12 floral blocks with step-by-step instructions and photos. You'll find anemone, camellia, iris, lady's slipper, pansies, sweet peas, and more!

A rich resource for the appliqué enthusiast.

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs Volume Four: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback] Review

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs Volume Four: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback]I have been eagerly anticipating the publication of a new quilting book and was very excited to see it finally available. I already own all of the other books in this series (Volumes 1, 2 and 3) and have been waiting for months for the publication of this volume.

Mary Covey''s latest volume in her Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs series is technically not a book, but rather separate sheets packaged in a box. This "book" has just been published by Martingale and Company and it promises to be as wonderful as the previous 3 volumes.

You may ask why I like these designs so much. Well, there are several reasons. I like the fact that these are continuous line designs. I am a 'hurry up' kind of gal and like to get things done quickly, before I lose interest, so... continuous line quilting designs are my favourite motifs to work with. I don't have to stop, re-position and start quilting again.

Now, sometimes you may want to do blocks separately. If this is the case, Mary has an answer for this too. For each continuous line design in the book, there is also a block design in various sizes. That's great, but what is even better is that she also provides corner triangles to match, so you're covered no matter where you want to quilt. Oh, did I mention that her border designs include turning the corner, so you are able to keep right on going up the side of your quilt without having to turn and match motifs? Yes, Mary has thought of everything.

Sometimes I have trouble determining where to start and how to follow a continuous line motif. Again, Mary comes to my rescue. She includes a 'start' point and has arrows and numbers for you to follow so you don't get confused stitching the patterns.

Another feature that I like in this series is that each design is on its own page. The pages open up and the border motif, with the turning corner and side repeat, are there. This is easier, and more accurate, to use than trying to trace a quilting design from a book.

Best of all is Mary''s choice of designs. I find her motifs easy enough for a beginner, yet interesting enough, and with enough variety, to complement any project.

The Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook: Patterns, Projects and Inspirations [Paperback] Review

The Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook: Patterns, Projects and Inspirations [Paperback]Please pardon the review title. This book deserves it. It's interesting, clearly organized, and easy to use. You can read through it for enjoyment or ideas, or you can use the clear headings, the big color photos, or (if you're more of a words person than an images person) the very navigable table of contents or index, to find exactly the information you want in no time flat.

That's another nice thing about this book. It's jam-packed with information. It has a good history of sashiko. It has some historical info on different sashiko patterns. It has photos of sashiko through the ages. It has good explanations. It has loads of stitch patterns, all with full-color examples, reasonably idiot-proof directions, and suggestions for use so that you can design your own projects. It has a good variety of sample projects, plus a gorgeous gallery of what stitching experts have done with sashiko. It even has suggestions for what to use to get the right look if traditional Japanese tools and materials aren't available where you live.

If you want to learn sashiko and can only afford one book, this is the book to get. I'm very impressed with it.

Product Description:
Sashiko, the traditional Japanese technique of needlework quilting, uses simple running stitch to create beautifully decorative patterns ideal for patchwork, quilting and embroidery. Sashiko (pronounced shash-ko) means 'stab stitch' and refers to the small running stitch that is worked to build up distinctive decorative patterns, of which there are hundreds. The book begins by exploring the origins of the technique to strengthen clothes and to make them warmer. Getting Started describes everything you need to begin stitching, including selecting suitable fabrics and threads, marking out patterns on the fabric, as well as the stitching technique itself. Ten project chapters show how easy it is to use sashiko patterns to make beautiful items for the home. The sashiko patterns are described in step-by-step detail in the pattern library, showing you exactly how to achieve each individual pattern with ease. Finally a gallery of work by contemporary Japanese textile artists provides extra inspiration.

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs, Vol. 2: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback]I have had a short-arm home quilting system with a laser and pantograph shelf for only about 6 months now, so am a beginner at machine quilting.I find Mary's designs very easy to follow, and very well planned.Start and center lines are indicated on the papers, as well as lines for aligning the pattern to the border. She also includes numbers for learning the flow of the pattern.Best of all, her design sheets show you how to get around the corner of your quilted border! The designs range from all purpose scrolls and feathers to leaves and garden flowers, as well as more whimsical designs such as dogs and stars/moons.She includes sub-designs for corner squares and quilt blocks as well.I have several machine quilting books but but find myself relying almost exclusively on these designs!I am hoping the author creates another pattern packet soon!

Strips & Strings: 16 Sparkling Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Strips & Strings: 16 Sparkling Quilts [Paperback]This book is the best! I can't wait to make at least 3 of the quilts in this book. I like the fact that most of the quilts are in a size that I like to make(large lap size). Great way to use up the scraps or for those who just like the scrappy look. Strips are cut different widths, so you don't have to have any particular size of strip. Even a tiny piece will work! Seams don't line up, so this is great of beginners.
You will not be sorry, if you invest in this book!

A Bouquet of Quilts: Garden-Inspired Projects for the Home [Paperback] Review

A Bouquet of Quilts: Garden-Inspired Projects for the Home [Paperback]This is a marvellous book of -- unfortunately -- too few patterns.Japanese quiltmakers combine "new" traditional blocks such as baskets and log cabin with vintage-looking fabrics and somehow create really fresh-looking quilts.Cutting directions are a little clunky and pure applique would seem to be a lot simpler than some of the patchwork piecing that's shown.Nonetheless, some smaller versions of the quilts in the book are going to make it to my short list of projects to try.

Nine by Nine: 9-patch Quilts, 9 Ways (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Nine by Nine: 9-patch Quilts, 9 Ways [Paperback]Three years ago, I started a guild, One Stitch at a Time, to make quilts for Habitat for Humanity and Love and Hugs.I wish I had had a copy of NINE BY NINE at that time. Many of the members were new to quilting and this book shows just how a simple patch can make a wonderful quilts.

Ms. Hershey shows the reader what a nine patch is and how, by using different fabrics, it can become beautiful patterns. The first four pages show nine different ways a nine patch can be made and turned to create different patterns. The next eleven pages covers quilting and finishing basics so you can learn how or brush up on the techniques.

There are fourteen projects which range in size from a table runner to a quilt that is 115 ½" square. Each pattern has a photo of the finished quilts, the finished quilt size and the finished block size that make up the quilt.A paragraph about the quilts begins each set of instructions. There is a materials list provided, along with general materials needed.Next, the blocks that make up the quilts are shown.Cutting directions come next, followed by how to make each block.Assembling the whole quilts, adding borders and finishing instructions are the final directions given.

This is a wonderful book and each quilt/table runner is something that will fit right into our charity work of giving to Habitat for Humanity.I will definitely take this book to our guild and have them use the patterns.

Sew One And You're Done: Making a Quilt from a Single Block (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Sew One And You're Done: Making a Quilt from a Single Block [Paperback]Quilters know that friends who don't quilt and even those who do love receiving quilts as presents. I love making quilts for presents, but unfortunately, I don't have time to make complicated block by block quilts. This book takes pretty, traditional mostly star blocks and enlarges them so that one block becomes a lap size quilt. Most are approximately 50" x 50" when finished. The center squares are usually about 12", so for the more ambitious, a pretty block that you have made can become the center. I particularly like the Star Within a Star pattern, which is the traditional carpenter's star block, enlarged. I have made this in traditional Amish colors (black background, light and dark purple for the star) for my son for Christmas and another in contrasting floral color for a friend. WHen finished, it is a very striking single star quilt, suitable for a wall hanging. The directions for all of the quiltsare good and easy to follow. The technique used is rotary cutting and piecing -- no templates, no paper piecing. The book is suitable for quilters of all levels.
