Product Description:
You are invited on a journey into making landscape quilts and providing a bridge from traditional quiltmaking to scenic interpretation. The author leads you through a series of simple exercises designed to help you really see what you are looking at, to decide which images you favor, and to interpret them in fabric. Various simple quiltmaking techniques are combined in a building-block manner to make a fabric picture. Traditionally pieced blocks, whether sewn by hand or machine, are used to create large areas of a landscape. Sky, water, and land masses are made of these pieced sections, and the wonderful geometric shapes lend a subtle texture. She then shows how to add appliqu shapes and details to the background. In Your First Project, a very simple composition of trees, she takes you step by step through the process, then shows you how to add the 'Wow Factors,' those components that fool the eye into accepting illusion. 80 pages + large pull-out pattern section. AUTHORBIO: Mary's work hangs in private and public collections around the United States and Japan, and she has received recognition locally and nationally. Her quilts have been exhibited in numerous quilt shows and art shows from coast to coast, and she has pieces in the permanent collections of the White House and the Museum of the American Quilter's Society. Mary writes articles on technique, inspiration, and other professional topics, but her favorite creative activity is making quilted landscapes.

Landscape Quilts [Paperback] Review

Landscape Quilts [Paperback]I have been making landscape quilts for about a year and found this book inspirational in trying a new technique. Because it includes machine quilting, I was inspired to take a class. While I don't feel that I'll ever be the best machine quilter, I know enough to complete the quilting technique in this book. I am anxious to make my first quilt using this book. The idea is on paper and I am ready to implement it.
The pictures in this book are breathtaking and inspirational. Directions are easy to follow and include special "tip" squares on many of the pages. I highly recommend this book.

Impressionist Palette: Quilt Color & Design [Paperback] Review

Impressionist Palette: Quilt Color & Design [Paperback]Of the many books currently available on watercolour quilting, Impressionist Palette is, in my opinion, the best. The pictures are absolutely stunning; the quilts exquisite.Apart from being an art book, the instructions on the technique of watercolour quilting are extremely clear and well-written, making it possible for myself, a fearful watercolourist, to attempt and succeed in making a watercolour quilt.

Free-Style Quilts: A "No Rules" Approach [Paperback] Review

Free-Style Quilts: A 'No Rules' Approach [Paperback]I bought this book after I'd already started a pictorial quilt using techniques I learned about in Focus on Features by Charlotte Warr Andersen (highly recommended, too!). The quilt was coming along nicely and I was glad to see that a couple of techniques I'd worked out for myself are also used by the Author. The coolest thing about this book is its ability to inspire you to loosen up and just try things. I was struggling with the sky portion of my quilt, and following the author's advice, just started free-cutting pieces and layering them. It came together very quickly and I am happy with the results. A fascinating thing about Susan's quilts is this: they LOOK really complicated, but if you examine them very closely, you'll see that they are not. Her choices of fabric and quilting are the key to realistic portrayals and lively artistic qualities. I did find myself wondering how many layers of fabric there were in some areas of her Elements quilt.
This is definitely a book that needs to be on your shelf if you enjoy pictorial quilts! I agree with other reviewers on this, though: techniques are not covered in much depth. That's okay...because in my opinion it encourages people to gravitate toward whatever technique works best for them, whether it's needle turn applique, fusible web applique, complicated piecing, etc. The whole point is to be creative and not get stuck working within the confines of another quilter's approach.

Mosaic Picture Quilts: Turn Favorite Photos into Stunning Quilts [Paperback]The art of tuning your favorite photo into a quilt has become quite popular over the last year or so.MOSAIC PICTURE QUILTS is all about doing this.

Ms. Durbin provides nicely detailed directions on how to get your photo from paper to the quilt.By using a 1" fusible foundation and 1 1/4" fabric squares, you are able to create the graduated colors that a photo shows. But wait, it is easier than you would think because there are no turned under edges.Everything is done in "raw form".The secret is an overlay of tulle fabric!By using this overlay, you can even incorporate 3-D embellishments such as rocks, dried flowers or twigs to add extra punch to the quilt.

Ms. Durbin provides photomaps and transparency forms so you can create these or your own. A four page gallery of quilts she has done show just how detailed these quilts really are.If you have always dreamed of turning your favorite photo into a fabric keepsake, this book will walk you through just how to do it.
