Asian Elegance: Quilting With Japanese Fabrics and More (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Asian Elegance: Quilting With Japanese Fabrics and More [Paperback]Kitty Pippen broke new ground with her first book, Quilting with Japanese Fabrics, and I consider it a "must have book" for anyone with more than a passing interest in Japanese fabrics.Ms. Pippen and her daughter, Sylvia, have pushed the boundaries further with this book, Asian Elegance, which incorporates polynesian and Japanese fabrics, design elements and ideas.Well done Pippens!

Since her first book, many of the Japanese fabrics that were so readily available are rare. Many traditional Japanese fabric makers are no longer manufacturing, or have modernized or moved to other countries. The quilts in the new book reflect some of these changes.Fabrics are more contemporary, embrace polynesian elements, and generallyare available at most quilt and fabric stores or from resources listed in the book. All in all, this is a book to inspire, and grow your ideas. The elements of graceful design are timeless. It's worth the investment.

At Piece with Time: A Woman's Journey Stitched in Cloth [Paperback] Review

At Piece with Time: A Woman's Journey Stitched in Cloth [Paperback]If I was asked which book I would recommend as a great Christmas gift for a quilter, I would not hesitate to recommend the book titled At Peace with Time - a Woman's Journey Stitched in Cloth, written by Kristin C. Steiner & Diane C. Frankenberger. This absolutely beautiful book is published by C & T Publishing and is available at any good bookshop. (See link below)

The one thing that shines from the beginning to end in this book is its essential highlighting of the goodness of the human spirit, the wonderful fellowship of fellow stitchers that we enjoy, all tied up with a pinch of wisdom and a sprinkle of words from the gospels, and the awesome watercolors and drawings by Diane C. Frankenberger.

If you never make the quilt, blocks or other goodies displayed in this book, it is such a wonderful manuscript to read, that you will feel like you've been stitching. I was given this book when "doing time" in hospital. It was the most wonderful dose of medicine, every time I picked it up, I felt fully satisfied that I had enjoyed a quilting moment.

Apart from the full instructions for making their lovely quilt of pieced and appliquéd blocks, the book also includes instructions for creating a Travel Journal, A traveling Sewing Kit, a lovely baby quilt titled Ring Around the Rosy, a doll and doll quilt, a gorgeous pillow with a title of Profound Pillow and as a bonus, a number of yummy recipes and lots of sayings, quotes and simply inspiring words.

The Authors Kristin C. Steiner and Diane C. Frankenberger have given a great deal of thought to the layout of the book, keeping its integrity of providing simple pleasure throughout the whole book. The illustrations are extremely clear and concise and easy to understand. The cutting instructions are incredibly simply described, no chance of getting the wrong message here.

As mentioned previously, this is not necessarily a book that only a "doer" will enjoy. All of us go through cycles of getting quilting done, and then not getting quilting done. Sometimes our heart isn't in its right phase, or the family is demanding more of our time.

This book is a perfect solution to the "don't have time to stitch" syndrome that we all suffer from time to time. A few minutes spent pouring over this book; will give you the feeling of having stitched. I try to use the same theory when on a diet. I spend a bit of time looking through a recipe book with the hope that I'll feel like I've eaten!! (I wish!!). Go and have a look at this delightful creation. It's one of my all time favourites.

Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs [Paperback]The floral designs in Jane Townswick's second Artful Appliqué book are beautiful, natural, and detailed. Never fear, Jane takes you step-by-step through her way of mastering this realism. While advising beginners to consult one of her previous books or another reference book for the basics of appliqué, she introduces many fantastic techniques to throw into your appliqué bag of tricks.

In this volume Jane introduces Scrapliqué, a technique for creating mosaic-like fabric compositions for your motifs without having to stitch tiny pieces together. There's also information on unit appliqué, where you can stitch an entire flower before stitching it to the background. Jane explains several advantages to this strategy.

The book has sections on color blending, free-form stems and branches, and a unique way of stitching sharp points. There's a gorgeous gallery of quilts and 12 floral blocks with step-by-step instructions and photos. You'll find anemone, camellia, iris, lady's slipper, pansies, sweet peas, and more!

A rich resource for the appliqué enthusiast.

Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks [Spiral-bound] Review

Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks [Spiral-bound]Better Homes and Garden books have sure improved since I became disenchanted with them in the 80's.And this is an excellent book no matter if you are a beginner or more accomplished at quilting. It is in an easy to use large spiral book form which makes laying it open as you work on one of the quilts or refer to a procedure for making quilting easier much easier.
It is laid out in a decades genre, where 1830-1860, 0n into 1920-1950 and borders are discussed in excellent detail with clear photos and exact size templates you can copy and use. Since I am fond of the Sunbonnet Sue (page 168) quilt my Grandma Katie made for my bed and dolls cradle I wanted to learn how to make one myself.
I make quilts but they are self designed appliqué types and I wanted to discover the old quilt arts. Although the crazy quilts shown (page 104) come close to what I do.
I personally don't know anyone who wouldn't find this excellent book helpful and being well used.Everytime I start to put the book away I realize that I need it out since I am always doing some type of quilt work....

Reproduction Quilts from the Civil War Period, 1850-1865: Patterns for Quilts, Blocks and Wall Pieces from the Civil War Era [Unknown Binding]This book has interesting ideas, but it is not for people who are just beginners. Please note that there is a mistake on page 18 in the pattern for the Civil War Star Wallhanging.Piece "C" is listed as being from the "print" fabric, but some "C" pieces are print, and some "C" pieces are muslin. I learned this the hard way!

More Biblical Quilt Blocks: New Inspirational Designs [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

More Biblical Quilt Blocks: New Inspirational Designs [Paperback]I have the first book this author wrote, and was extremely disappointed to find out that at least half the blocks in her new book are repeated from her first book. I feel that the title is misleading. Several of the authors of multiple volumes on the same subject are in my library. Examples would be Bethany Reynolds, Marsha McCloskey, Sharyn Craig, and Carol Doak. In each and every case, the blocks or techniques do not repeat the items that appeared in their earlier books. Therefore, it's logical to expect that a book entitled "More Biblical Blocks" would haveadditional blocks to the ones you already have.

Have you ever bought a CD of an artist you liked to find out that half or more of the songs were repeats from one you already owned? Well, this is the equivalent. Since the book isn't cheap, it's doubly disappointing.

Whereas I do agree that the directions are guite good, they are no better than those contained in many other books on the market by other authors, so there is nothing remarkable in that arena. If you have this author's "Biblical Blocks" book, I'd recommend skipping this one. If you're considering buying one of her books, buy only this one and skip the first, so it can have value to some. I, however, feel ripped off.

Beautiful Blooms: Quilts and Cushions to Applique (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Beautiful Blooms: Quilts and Cushions to Applique [Paperback]This is definitely the book for me.I DON'T have a green thumb but I do appliqué.I wish I had found this book last fall rather than now going into summer but the book will still be there come fall.Appliqué is something I love to do in front of the fireplace on a cool/cold night.

The first 25 pages are all about appliqué hot-to's and quilting basics along with choosing colors and fabrics. It is a chapter that very thoroughly covers all these points.

Then there are 10 different flowers to "grow" under your needle.Pillows and wall hangings make up the 10 patterns. While no quilts are shown, there is no reason you couldn't turn the patterns into quilts.

Each project begins with a paragraph about the flower and the finished size of the project.A materials and cutting list follow this.Simple construction directions are given with finishing suggestions. All templates are included. The more complex patterns come with color keys as well.

Grab some scrap fabric (this book will give you a way to use up those scraps you just can't part with), some template plastic, your ruler and cutting mat and this book. When you are done, you will have a "green thumb" to show for it!

Better Together: Two-Block Designs for Dynamic Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Better Together: Two-Block Designs for Dynamic Quilts [Paperback]As one would expect from Martingale, Better Together is a wonderfully produced and well-written book that will inspire both beginning and advanced quilters. In the first few pages, the award-winning author provides insight on fabric selection and preparation and quiltmaking basics, including many of her useful "insider" tips for piecing and quilting that will also be useful to advanced quilters. The cover photo is an appropriate representation of the book's contents - the quilts are striking and beautifully photographed in full-page format.

Through the 10 main chapters of the book, the author shows how to make dynamic, visually-intricate quilts by combining only two separate block designs in each quilt. The author's choice of colors and value take advantage of the alternate patterns that emerge as the different blocks are joined.Included are examples of how different color choices can dramatically alter the look of a quilt, as well as patterns that would be suitable for large-patterned themed fabrics.

The blocks are all rotary cut and constructed with squares, rectangles, and half or quarter square triangles.Instructions for each quilt, including fabric requirements, cutting measurements and construction steps, are complete and clearly and concisely written.Full-color illustrations matching the photographed quilt accompany each step, and quilting suggestions are also provided.

The author's personable writing style makes you feel as though you had a good friend sitting with you as you are sewing. This is a lovely book from beginning to end.The author's knowledge, passion for quilting and warm writing style are an inspiration - Quilters and this book are truly "Better Together."We hope to see another book from this author soon!
