There is no one "right answer" to a quilt-making colour dilemma, according to teacher/designer Mary Mashuta. Mashuta seeks to demonstrate that instead there are many right answers. These six quilt projects - based on simple, traditional-style blocks - seek to show readers how to stretch their artistic ability and build their colour confidence. Quilters should discover dozens of "right answers" for constructing original designs, choosing vibrant colours, keeping backgrounds fresh and interesting, and developing an individual style that makes each quilt special.

Liberated Quiltmaking II [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Liberated Quiltmaking II [Paperback]My copy arrived today and I love it. I have been a fan of Gwen Marston for a long time. She is a master quilter with a sense of humor. Whether you are a new or experienced quilter, you will find something here to love. Gwen is an excellent teacher who shows you useful techniques for piecing "by eye," and she answers many practical questions that will enable you to confidently design and make your own unique quilts. If you want to move beyond following patterns, this is the book for you! I have been a quilter since 1966 and I'm loving all the inspiration in this book. It makes me want to start a new quilt right now.

Here are some examples of her advice: "You don't need to choose all the colors before you start sewing." "It's harder to make a mistake than you think." "It's easier to err by playing it too safe: over-coordination can lead to the "color by number" look and a monotonous quilt." Her approach will loosen you up to have more fun making quilts.

The photos are beautiful. There are string quilts, basket quilts, star quilts, housetop/log cabin quilts, medallion quilts, some applique, traditional but liberated flying geese, and more. I particularly like the liberated chair quilt on page 122. This book is fun to read and she makes me laugh. It's the next best thing to attending one of Gwen's retreats. You can dive in at any point in the book.

This book will energize your quilting. I highly recommend it; you won't be disappointed.

A Quilter's Diary: Written in Stitches (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

A Quilter's Diary: Written in Stitches [Paperback]As with all of Mimi Dietrich's books, 'A Quilter's Diary' is an attractive and well presented volume. The central concept of the book is the idea of making a 'quilt diary' about yourself or someone else - choosing quilt blocks whose names or patterns represent important mile stones in your life. There are photos of Mimi's own diary quilt and the quilts of some of her students as well as the patterns for 150 patchwork and applique blocks arranged according to various themes such as childhood, parents, true love, home, career and so on. The only reason I haven't given the book five stars is because 150 blocks don't really provide enough choice for a personal quilt, and readers will have to look further at other quilt block books - to be fair, there is a list of possibilites in the bibliography at the end, but it would have been nice to see more blocks presented as well as they are here.

Drafting and Design Simplified (Quilting Library) [Hardcover] Review

Drafting and Design Simplified [Hardcover]I'm new to quilting, but am already growing restless with just creating quilts with established block patterns. I read about this book in one of the quilting magazines I get (it was mentioned in an article) and while it doesn't seem to be available as a "new" book directly from Amazon, I did find several used book sellars that had copies. I haven't been able to clear my head of all the ideas that I have now! Don't let the title intimadate you! There is no complicated math involved in altering block designs to make them "you". Some graph paper and a ruler and your imagination and you're off and running. You'll be amazed at how different you can make an old block design look with just moving a few lines. Be adventurous! Get this book and have some fun!

Free & Eazy Circles: Magic Ballz & Other Foundation Follies [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Free & Eazy Circles: Magic Ballz & Other Foundation Follies [Paperback]This is a colorful, fun book full of ideas for bright, happy quilts. The technique involves piecing circles (ballz) on foundations such as stablized batting, then appliquing them onto blocks. The result is a raised design that has a nice padded look, which is attractive on its own, but can also be jazzed up with embroidery, beads or rick rack. Jan also shows how to make padded pieces to use around the balls, or as edging around the entire piece. Lots of creative ideas for using the wonderful bright fabrics available to quilters today. She also has some interesting ideas for free motion quilting designs. A very nice resource and addition to your quilting library.

Passionate Patchwork: Over 20 Original Quilt Designs [Hardcover] Review

Passionate Patchwork: Over 20 Original Quilt Designs [Hardcover]If you're a color junkie, if the sight of a newly-opened six-row box of Crayolas leaves you breathless, and if you walk through fabric stores just for the color hit, then "Passionate Patchwork" is a book for you. Without a doubt, the projects in this book are made up in the most sophisticated and exciting palettes ever seen in a quilt book. And the quilts--all of which look eminently doable, even by a rank beginner--are photographed in such lush, visually sumptuous settings that you can happily spend hours simply "reading" the photos. The other thing I like about this book is that these quilts are quite possible. We are not talking about quilts with 75 differently shaped chunks of fabric that must be pieced into each block. These quilts are not exercises in perfectionistic anality, but are made of simple geometric shapes that let the fabric do the talking, and leave the quiltmaker with sanity intact. Admittedly, one of the authors does have a signature line of fabric, and many quilts photographed make extensive use of that line. But any quilter's fabric stash already contains many comparable textiles that could be put to more sophisticated use, in exciting new combinations shown in this book. Several of the quilts in this book make use of "orphan" blocks that are showcased by being re-set with imaginative new uses of color and fabric pattern. This seems a respectful use and transformation of handwork from earlier times: the newly-made quilts look fresh and exciting, even when they used segements of old cliche patterns such as wedding ring and grandmother's flower garden. But you don't have to be a quilter to love this book. Although it has simple, easy-to-follow diagrams and directions for each product, the book could just as well appeal to knitters, painters, weavers, decorators or anyone else with a love of and appetite for color used creatively. I have already picked out my next few quilting projects inspired by this book. (The "rice bowl" and "hatbox" quilts are particularly compelling). That I would use quilts in this book as a model is certainly something I could not say for nine out of every ten other quilting books published. But ``Passionate Patchwork" has sophistication and verve, appealing to both the traditional quilter and and the fans of the cutting-edge contemporary. Bottom line? I love this book.

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc! [Paperback] Review

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc [Paperback]This book has hundreds of design possibilities, all shown in grayscale diagrams. There are photographs of some of them made up, but for most of them you'll have to do your own color choices and placement. These blocks could be made up into bed-sized quilts, starting with large squares as building blocks, or into blocks to go into a quilt, or as a single smaller block as a wallhanging or other small quilt project. This is not for someone who needs handholding and precise step-by-step directions. But if you're confident in your own taste and able to make decisions for yourself as you go along, and can look at a block diagram and see how it should be sewn together, this offers you lots of options. All the blocks are made from simple units -- squares, four patches, "rail fence" units (two rectangles), and half-square triangles. The author gives you lots of possible ways to combine those units into quilt blocks of any size you choose, determined only by the size of square you start with. This is a book I'll return to again and again.

The latest trend in fabric is precut squares or rectangles. Layer Cakes from Moda are 10 inch squares. Sweet 16s from Maywood Studios are 9 inch x 11 inch rectangles. One Fat Quarter can be cut into four 8-1/2 inch squares. Making the designs even more flexible, these patterns will work for ANY SIZE SQUARE! The popular 5 inch charm packs will make a fun baby quilt size or table topper. Or maybe you have cut leftover fabrics from past projects into 4 inch or 6 inch squares (or any other uniform size). These patterns will work perfectly for those squares as well! You could even start with a 16 inch or 17 inch square and use one of these patterns to make a king size quilt. It just takes 36 squares of any size to make any or all of these quilts. This book contains instructions to make 238 quilts! All of the instructions are written for beginners. This book offers beginning quilters several benefits. The quilts are all made up of basic blocks. The fabric in the precut, prepackaged fabric bundles all match. The book describes several methods for organizing scrap quilts. Beginning quilters are introduced to the creative process of quilting. However, these quilts are not just for beginners. Experienced quilters can enjoy making a quick project as a gift or to experiment with new colors. This book takes quilters through four steps of basic quiltmaking. Step 1: Choose Your Pattern. Step 2: Organize Your Fabrics. Step 3: Sew Your Blocks Together. Step 4: Layout and Sew Your Quilt. Going through these steps involves quilters with the entire process of quilt making in a fun, simple way.Big Block Quilts contains patterns for 238 quilts with full color pictures of 21 of these patterns. Better Together: Two-Block Designs for Dynamic Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Better Together: Two-Block Designs for Dynamic Quilts [Paperback]As one would expect from Martingale, Better Together is a wonderfully produced and well-written book that will inspire both beginning and advanced quilters. In the first few pages, the award-winning author provides insight on fabric selection and preparation and quiltmaking basics, including many of her useful "insider" tips for piecing and quilting that will also be useful to advanced quilters. The cover photo is an appropriate representation of the book's contents - the quilts are striking and beautifully photographed in full-page format.

Through the 10 main chapters of the book, the author shows how to make dynamic, visually-intricate quilts by combining only two separate block designs in each quilt. The author's choice of colors and value take advantage of the alternate patterns that emerge as the different blocks are joined.Included are examples of how different color choices can dramatically alter the look of a quilt, as well as patterns that would be suitable for large-patterned themed fabrics.

The blocks are all rotary cut and constructed with squares, rectangles, and half or quarter square triangles.Instructions for each quilt, including fabric requirements, cutting measurements and construction steps, are complete and clearly and concisely written.Full-color illustrations matching the photographed quilt accompany each step, and quilting suggestions are also provided.

The author's personable writing style makes you feel as though you had a good friend sitting with you as you are sewing. This is a lovely book from beginning to end.The author's knowledge, passion for quilting and warm writing style are an inspiration - Quilters and this book are truly "Better Together."We hope to see another book from this author soon!

A Passion for Piecing: Breathtaking Quilts from Easy Paper-Pieced Units; 16 Projects + Award-Winning Quilts [Paperback] Review

A Passion for Piecing: Breathtaking Quilts from Easy Paper-Pieced Units; 16 Projects + Award-Winning Quilts [Paperback]This book by Claudia Clark Myers is the best quilt and design book to come down the pike in a very long time.I have far too many books in my quilt library, and had sworn to downsize.I realized that many of the new books on the market are repeats of what I already have.I have always admired Ms. Myers work, and was excited to see that she had written a book.

I was definitely NOT disappointed. This book is fresh, exciting, and packed with beautiful pictures and galleries, and the instructions and tips are superb.Claudia comes from a background of costume designing, and it shows in her work and instruction. Her method is paper piecing, enabling the quilter to obtain perfect results. Even though it has 16 projects, it isn't merely a pattern book.It encourages the quilter to explore her/his own style and design sensibility. It is loaded with ideas and inspiration.I can say that it truly is a cut above most of the new quilt books I am seeing on the market today.

Do you want to move your quilting up to a new level?Do you love traditional, but want to breathe new life into it?Do you want to move into art quilting?Do you want to find your own style and signature? If so, this book is for you.It is suitable for all levels of adventurous quilting. This talented quilter has mastered not only her craft/art/talent, but also mastered the ability to show and encourage us how to do it.

At a time when I decided to be very mindful of the money I spend on quilting books, I can say that this book gives me more than my money's worth.

Thanks, Claudia.

City Quilts: 12 Dramatic Projects Inspired By Urban Views [Paperback] Review

City Quilts: 12 Dramatic Projects Inspired By Urban Views [Paperback]In City Quilts, one of my favorite quilt designers, Cherri House, demonstrates how basic geometric shapes and the use of boldly-colored fabrics can create the breathtakingly beautiful quilts. The patterns and textures of cityscapes, both architectural and the layout of a city itself, inspired these quilt patterns. The simple lines and shapes in these quilts coupled with the bold use of color provide a "wow" factor that is sure to delight quilters from novice to expert.

I especially loved Cherri's discussion on color, and her reference to "a quilter's palette".She gives a brief, but thoroughly informative discourse on color schemes, which serves as a springboard in one's own palette discovery or a challenge to an quilt dog to try some new color tricks.

In City Quilts, Cherri shows us how we can train our eyes to see more than what's in front of us, and to see a quilt in everything.Bravo!

Pretty Little Mini Quilts (Pretty Little Series) [Hardcover] Review

Pretty Little Mini Quilts [Hardcover]"Pretty Little Mini Quilts" is the latest Lark Book from the "Pretty Little..." line. These books are always little treasures that contain an eclectic assortment of whatever the "Little Book" is covering. The book itself is a comfortable to hold size of 8.24 inches X 8.25 inches (20.955cm X 20.955cm). The book's description "...more than two dozen talented designers create 31 mini quilts that look to the past as they rush forward to a fresh future...". An apt description since the books contains the best of traditional, what I like to call 'traditional with a twist, and whimsical art quilts. There really is something for everyone in this lovely little book!None of these small art works is larger than 36 inches (91.4 cm) in length or height.

Whip Up Mini Quilts: Patterns and How-to for 26 Contemporary Small Quilts [Hardcover] Review

Whip Up Mini Quilts: Patterns and How-to for 26 Contemporary Small Quilts [Hardcover]Making quilts has kept me entertained for more than 30 years, and this book full of fresh, fun and improvisational quilts is a welcome addition to my library. It has a wonderful and extensive introduction - basic tools and techniques are covered as well as more advanced topics such as embellishing and even fabric dyeing. There is a great glossary of quilting terms, a resource listing for books and for supply sources and a designer bio section. The format is very useful: the wire binding allows the book to lie flat and there is a handy pocket inside the front cover for the pattern sheets.
And the quilts! These little pieces really inspire me to try something new - not just to copy someone else's design and fabric choices, but to actually create my own work. The small size of these joyful works is just right to send me to my fabric stash to try a out a new idea. There are a wealth of creative techniques, including some - take a look at the Concentric Circles, for instance - that I haven't seen before and can't wait to use. There are works by some of my favorite quilt artists (thanks Victoria and Kellie!) as well as by people I'm not familiar with but will be following in the future.
Whether you are new to quilting or have been enjoying it for years, I'm pretty sure you'll find something here that will have your fingers itching to stitch up a new project - and isn't that what we all really want, no matter how many works we already have in progress? Happy quilting!
