Instant Bargello (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Instant Bargello [Paperback]I have always liked the Bargello pattern when I used it in needlepoint or plastic canvas patterns.I definitely do not like it in a quilt. This book shows picture quilts changed into the Bargello pattern. It makes them hard to look at, in my opinion, and difficult to see what the picture actually is.

The book itself has six pages on basic quilting. The patterns give the finished size and a color photo of the quilt.A materials and cutting list is provided.Assembly instructions follow these lists. There are no graphics to show what the written steps are talking about. There are no quilting suggestions and the only finishing instructions are lay the quilt top on batting and backing, baste and quilt. Not much help for a beginner.

There are six projects and a two photo gallery of other quilts. There is a short bio on the author.

This is not a book I would recommend purchasing unless you are extremely excited about the Bargello look and have enough quilting experience that you don't need finishing suggestions.

336 Ten-Minute Quilt Blocks: to Foundation-Piece, Quick-Piece, NoSew Applique, Stamp, Stencil, Paint & Embellish [Paperback] Review

336 Ten-Minute Quilt Blocks: to Foundation-Piece, Quick-Piece, NoSew Applique, Stamp, Stencil, Paint & Embellish [Paperback]I purchased this book, sight unseen, because I am a collector of quilt block books. I love reviewing the books and planning my next project, this book, claiming to have '336' quilt blocks seemed to be ideal. Well, I was wrong. Dead Wrong.
The layout of this book is TERRIBLE. It features six eye-poppingly colorful blocks per page which most of which are not pieced, but are merely DRAWN. There are illustrations which claim to be patterns but there are no actual measurements included. Sure, this looks good....But...The reader is left wondering how to put it all together.
I think it is disingenuous NOT to show completed pieced blocks in a quilt block book or measurements. I probably will try to put a couple of the "Tree" blocks together, but I think it will be challenging.
Recommended: No. A good 'idea' book, but not for careful piecers, and certainly NOT easy to complete in 10 minutes!

Stack the Deck!: Crazy Quilts in 4 Easy Steps [Paperback] Review

Stack the Deck: Crazy Quilts in 4 Easy Steps [Paperback]Ms Alexander has created a very innnovative way to tackle a crazy quilt:via piecework. There is no real development of the embellishment stage of her piecework; other books like Michlers or Montano Baker can tackle that. This book is totally for the patchwork, piecework, sewer in you.
It's an interesting approach of cutting material, patches, into various shapes and then 'shuffling them' into a whole.I was quite impressed by the easy variety of this simple method.
Some of the early quilts shown are boring and not really indicative of the method but as the book progresses it gets steam and starts showing how the use of colour in this art form can really breathe life into a quilt.
I think this book is 1) an easy introduction into crazy quilts,
especially for those who have not been smitten by the other methds and 2) a different way for those of us who love crazies but want more colour variety and play in their quilts, many have a hard time with this aspect of the crazy free-form quilting method, getting the colours to interplay correctly, and 3) for those who like the mechanical piecework aspect of patchworks (same blocks sewn together) in a rhythmic pattern. All three groups will not be disappointed.Just remember for the final stage, embellishment, go elsewhere.
So on allot of levels this book satisfies.Happy quilting.

Phenomenal Fat Quarter Quilts: New Projects with Tips to Inspire & Enhance Your Quiltmaking [Paperback] Review

Phenomenal Fat Quarter Quilts: New Projects with Tips to Inspire & Enhance Your Quiltmaking [Paperback]Like every other quilter, I can't resist those packages of fat quarters. Someone else has done the hard work of matching fabrics that work together so well that they sparkle. But when you get home... what the heck can you do with them?

By this point, I've collected quite a few quilting books, and I'm often surprised at the varied quality. Sometimes, the quilts are pretty, but the step-by-step process is unclear. Sometimes, the sample quilts are perfectly nice, but *I* would sure never make them. Not in THOSE fabrics. Or you can't even figure out what the quilt would look like.

M'Liss Rae Hawley avoids all those traps. I'm just finishing the first quilt I've tried from the book, and I'm very impressed. The instructions are very clear, with plenty of sensible tips about color choice, cutting techniques, and so on. I'm going to make a point of looking for more books by this author.

First, all the quilts in this book are attractive. She also gives SEVERAL photos of what each pattern will look like, using different fabrics -- which is particularly appreciated since fat quarter packs can very from a rainbow of batiks to a collection of floral fabrics, and it's hard (at least for me) to estimate the resulting mood of the quilt. There's plenty of eye candy and creative inspiration.

As you'd imagine, these quilts all feature fat quarters -- anywhere from 6 to 12 of them. Don't expect to grab that package and get right to work, though, as every quilt needs at least one additional fabric; often, it's a focus fabric, sometimes a background. Also, while the quilts are bed-size, they're pretty much for smaller beds -- usually twin, maybe full.

Great book, though. Recommended.

Quilting personality M'Liss shares her fast and easy tricks for planning, cutting, and piecing quilts using fat quarters. The projects feature M'Liss' original designs and old favorite patterns with a new twist. Quilters are encouraged to pick a theme, decide on their "color story," and then select a pattern that will easily be turned into fast, fabulous projects. Also included are tips for machine embroidery, embellishment, and more.
M'Liss Rae Hawley has won numerous awards for her work, including honors from Bernina and Better Homes & Gardens. Her work has been featured in several national publications, such as McCall's Quilting and QUILT magazine. Nine by Nine: 9-patch Quilts, 9 Ways (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Nine by Nine: 9-patch Quilts, 9 Ways [Paperback]Three years ago, I started a guild, One Stitch at a Time, to make quilts for Habitat for Humanity and Love and Hugs.I wish I had had a copy of NINE BY NINE at that time. Many of the members were new to quilting and this book shows just how a simple patch can make a wonderful quilts.

Ms. Hershey shows the reader what a nine patch is and how, by using different fabrics, it can become beautiful patterns. The first four pages show nine different ways a nine patch can be made and turned to create different patterns. The next eleven pages covers quilting and finishing basics so you can learn how or brush up on the techniques.

There are fourteen projects which range in size from a table runner to a quilt that is 115 ½" square. Each pattern has a photo of the finished quilts, the finished quilt size and the finished block size that make up the quilt.A paragraph about the quilts begins each set of instructions. There is a materials list provided, along with general materials needed.Next, the blocks that make up the quilts are shown.Cutting directions come next, followed by how to make each block.Assembling the whole quilts, adding borders and finishing instructions are the final directions given.

This is a wonderful book and each quilt/table runner is something that will fit right into our charity work of giving to Habitat for Humanity.I will definitely take this book to our guild and have them use the patterns.

Sew One And You're Done: Making a Quilt from a Single Block (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Sew One And You're Done: Making a Quilt from a Single Block [Paperback]Quilters know that friends who don't quilt and even those who do love receiving quilts as presents. I love making quilts for presents, but unfortunately, I don't have time to make complicated block by block quilts. This book takes pretty, traditional mostly star blocks and enlarges them so that one block becomes a lap size quilt. Most are approximately 50" x 50" when finished. The center squares are usually about 12", so for the more ambitious, a pretty block that you have made can become the center. I particularly like the Star Within a Star pattern, which is the traditional carpenter's star block, enlarged. I have made this in traditional Amish colors (black background, light and dark purple for the star) for my son for Christmas and another in contrasting floral color for a friend. WHen finished, it is a very striking single star quilt, suitable for a wall hanging. The directions for all of the quiltsare good and easy to follow. The technique used is rotary cutting and piecing -- no templates, no paper piecing. The book is suitable for quilters of all levels.

More Fat Quarter Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

More Fat Quarter Quilts [Paperback]I loved M'Liss Hawley's first fat quarter book and looked forward to this one.All the quilts in it look wonderful, particularly the Bargello which I'm dying to try.
However, there is a big error in at least one of the sets of instructions!"Triple Rail on Point" is the first quilt I'm trying from this book, and I've discovered that the diagram illustrating the number of blocks in each row is wrong. The diagram shows a single block in each corner of the main body of the quilt. This seemed a bit funny as all the example quilt photos showed 2 blocks in two of the opposite corners, 1 in the other two.As I began sewing my rows together as per the diagram, I finally realized there _is_ supposed to be 1 more block added onto the end of 6 or 7 of the rows.I have to go back and somehow fit them in to my already-sewn-together rows.If I don't, there will be either holes in my quilt top when I trim the setting triangles, or my block points will be cut off.NOT GOOD!
I hope this is the only error - I still want to make the other quilts but I'm going to be extremely cautious in comparing the diagrams to the photos from now on.I've pulled a lot of my hair out over this one!
