Holiday Quilts: 25 Designs for Holidays and Every Day [Paperback] Review

Holiday Quilts: 25 Designs for Holidays and Every Day [Paperback]I just got this book and was inspired by all the clever projects...the book primarily features a blue and white colorway for the holiday themed projects, which I like because it seems more inclusive of winter holidays such as Hanukkah. I'm inspired by theeffective uses of striped fabrics in many of the projects...and while the book includes the basic table runners, place mats and napkins, quilts and pillowcases -it also features a lovely window valance and a rollup shade, and some more unusual projects such as a mantle cover, a wall sconce and a very clever fabricjumping jack! A few people on my holiday list are sure to get one of those! Each project is shown in holiday and everyday variations, and full sized tissue patterns are included in an envelope in the back of the book - which makes it a great deal, considering the price of patterns. And in plenty of time to create a houseful of decorations for the holidays.

Fig Tree Quilts: Houses (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Fig Tree Quilts: Houses [Paperback]I have always LOVED quilts with houses on them --- all kinds of houses --- funky, cottage, or realistic --- they all call to me.FIG TREE QUILTS, Houses is a book that satisfies that calling.

With thirteen quilts and one purse project, I will be able to "build" houses to my hearts content.I could even make a whole city on one quilt by combining the patterns.Come to think of it, that idea would make a cute wall hanging!

The book begins with sixteen pages of basic information from fabric selection right on through to finishing techniques.Continuing in the theme of houses, the tips are shown in colored boxes and called "Schoolhouse" so they are easy to find and identify. Each project begins with an overview of how the pattern came to be and a color photo of the finished item. Next are a material and cutting list and piecing instructions have plenty of graphics to help you visualize the steps.Assembling and finishing information comes next and any templates you need are provided. The skills used to make these quilts are as varied as the quilts themselves.Appliqué, piecing, making strips to cut into blocks and embroidery are all used.

The last two pages of the book are bios of the authors.I always enjoy learning about how the authors became authors! This is a book I will share with our guild as we make quilts for Habitat for Humanity! What a great theme for a new house ---- a quilt with a house on it!

Comfort and Joy: 14 Quilts for Christmas [Paperback]Ms. Hickey has written a quilt book for quilters of all levels. While I consider myself an experienced quilter, I enjoyed her tips on how-to pick fabrics and why to pre-wash them. She takes you through all the steps on how to make q quilt right up o adding the label.

Simple Comforts: 12 Cozy Lap Quilts [Paperback] Review

Simple Comforts: 12 Cozy Lap Quilts [Paperback]Kim Diehl presents us with one more fine book in her "Simple" series.I already own "Simple Seasons", so I snapped up the new "Simple Comforts" as soon as I saw it.

These "Simple" books tend toward traditional patterns done in strong colorations with just the right mix of color and contrast, and not TOO much applique.Ms. Diehl's style also lends itself very well to scrappyness, and "Simple Comforts" is a wonderful resource to inspire you to finally deal with those scraps.

The Table of Contents page provides thumbnail photos of each of the 12 quilt patterns, which is a most helpful editing technique that I wish all publishers would utilize. You instantly see the full range Diehl's colorful interpretation of traditional patterns.

Of course, you can make these quilts using really modern/mod fabrics, and there is one particular quilt - "Checkerberry Bliss" - that is a great exercise in contrast in black and light greens. My favorite is "Twilight Hopscotch", a really lovely star/chain variation in tone-on-tone greens on neutral; I am thinking of making this one first to use as a shower curtain.

Scattered throughout the book are Diehl's "Pin Points", which are helpful insets which offer handy technique tips. Also worth noting: each pattern includes directional arrows for "proper" seam pressing, which I rely on to help me best-match pieced seams.

I look forward to more "Simple" books from Kim Diehl; whether this is your first of her books or not, I think this one will inspire those of us who prefer colorful yet still largely traditional patterns."Simply" a winner!!

Simple Traditions: 14 Quilts to Warm Your Home (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Simple Traditions: 14 Quilts to Warm Your Home [Paperback]Many books of quilt patterns have one particular "mood," and the suitability of the book for your needs depends less on the quality of instruction than on the need of the reader. Kim Diehl's Simple Traditions is a good example. If you like to sew quilts with a lot of applique, in traditional old-fashioned patterns, using primarily scraps -- then you're going to *love* her book. If not... well, this one isn't for you.

I'm in the latter camp, mostly, but the book earns its five stars because it fulfills its promise extremely well.

Let me describe what you get, so that you can make a decision for yourself.

Only three of the fourteen quilts in the book are bed quilts. Most are much smaller: lap quilts and wall quilts. Every one of the quilts uses scraps, often in a multitude of fabrics (which, in my opinion, makes this an unsuitable book for a rank beginner; you simply won't have enough of a stash yet). For instance, one lap quilt uses 2 yards of cranberry, 1 1/8 yards of tan print, then 56 squares, 6.5"x6.5" of assorted homespun plaids and stripes. Oh, and "assorted green plaid scraps for stem and leaf appliques." She doesn't give options for those of us who like the design but would be happy to sew the quilt in, say, cranberry, tan, and *one* homespun plaid.

The quilts are definitely pretty, though! The book cover is an accurate clue to the contents: lots of flowers and baskets in applique, and designs appropriate for small "vintage" prints. Any of them would be suitable for a home decorated in a "country" or traditional style. My home is primarily Mission Style (Arts & Crafts), which may be why few of these make me itch to pull out the rotary cutter. However, I do have my eye on a simple "harvest heart wall quilt" that appears to be a weekend project that'd work for my first stab at applique. (I hope it's the applique being stabbed and not my sewing fingers.)

Diehl's instructions are both easy to understand and encouraging They need to be, because many of these designs are very busy! Beautiful, but busy. She doesn't skimp on teaching how to do applique, either; I think I'll be able to figure it out. Plus, Diehl includes advice about how to quilt the quilt; you aren't left with that vague suggestion, "Quilt as desired."

Overall, Diehl does an excellent job at delivering on the promise of "simple traditions." If you like scrap quilts and applique, you're going to wear out this book.

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps [Paperback]What to do with the scraps from other quilts! That is always a question in a quilter's mind.BITS AND PIECES helps solve that problem. While the book is about making small quilts in the size range of 20" square, there is no reason you couldn't make several of the small quilts, put them together and make a bed sized one!A bit of sashing between each "quilt" and you have a large quilt instead. For example, in One Patch Garden, there are lots of colorful square with a border. So just make more squares from your leftovers and you have the bed quilt

Each pattern, of which there are 17, begins with a bit of information about the quilt. Then the size of the finished project is listed and a materials list is given. Cutting instructions come next followed by how to assemble the top and finishing directions. There are plenty of graphics to help you visualize what the instructions are telling you to do.And lots of tips are found in special boxes through out.

Your quilts will most likely not match the ones in the photos as your scraps are sure to be different than the author's.The quilts are divided into four types, those using squares and rectangles, those using triangles, those using diamonds and those using curves and circles with easy appliqué.This makes the book one in which everyone will find a project to their liking.
