Members of the Columbia River Piecemakers Quilt Guild, based in Columbia County, Oregon, offer seven patterns for quilters of all experience levels. Complete instructions include cutting directions for a variety of quilt sizes, and sample quilts range from miniature to king. There's a warm sparkle in these modernized beauties and plenty of solid advice about how to make them.Editor Tricia Brown is a member of the Columbia River Piecemakers Quilt Guild, and one of thirty-two women (plus one man!) who participated in designing and creating the beautiful quilts for FRESH AIR IN THE ATTIC. She is the author of several nonfiction books for adults and two children's books, including the award-winning CHILDREN OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN and the recently released picture book GROUCHO'S EYEBROWS.

Simple Comforts: 12 Cozy Lap Quilts [Paperback] Review

Simple Comforts: 12 Cozy Lap Quilts [Paperback]Kim Diehl presents us with one more fine book in her "Simple" series.I already own "Simple Seasons", so I snapped up the new "Simple Comforts" as soon as I saw it.

These "Simple" books tend toward traditional patterns done in strong colorations with just the right mix of color and contrast, and not TOO much applique.Ms. Diehl's style also lends itself very well to scrappyness, and "Simple Comforts" is a wonderful resource to inspire you to finally deal with those scraps.

The Table of Contents page provides thumbnail photos of each of the 12 quilt patterns, which is a most helpful editing technique that I wish all publishers would utilize. You instantly see the full range Diehl's colorful interpretation of traditional patterns.

Of course, you can make these quilts using really modern/mod fabrics, and there is one particular quilt - "Checkerberry Bliss" - that is a great exercise in contrast in black and light greens. My favorite is "Twilight Hopscotch", a really lovely star/chain variation in tone-on-tone greens on neutral; I am thinking of making this one first to use as a shower curtain.

Scattered throughout the book are Diehl's "Pin Points", which are helpful insets which offer handy technique tips. Also worth noting: each pattern includes directional arrows for "proper" seam pressing, which I rely on to help me best-match pieced seams.

I look forward to more "Simple" books from Kim Diehl; whether this is your first of her books or not, I think this one will inspire those of us who prefer colorful yet still largely traditional patterns."Simply" a winner!!

Favorite Traditional Quilts Made Easy [Paperback]Making quilt block easier is the desire of any quilters.Making difficult quilt blocks easier is the challenge of every quilter. The author begins by making sure you are sewing accurately. If not, then nothing will fit no matter what you do.

Beginning the book by showing how to make sure your seams are accurate and your cutting is true is the best way to begin any quilt project.Once that is correct, the rest will fall into place. There are five pages of How-Tos and short cuts.Master these first. Then pick a project and go at it.

Ms. Parrott shows you how to piece the Pineapple block which is difficult as any quilter knows.Using her techniques, it is a breeze.Hate piecing a diamond or a trapezoid?Use Ms. Parrott's technique and you will wonder why you never used these pieces before.A modified 9-patch is the final block she shows us how to do.

The color photo of the quilt, the finished quilt and block size begin the project instructions. Each pattern has a materials and cutting list which is easy to understand and follow. There are plenty of graphics included in the directions for us visual people and the assembly and finishing directions round up the patterns directions.A small section on finishing your quilt and a paragraph about the author finishes out the book.

Now that you have the techniques down, apply them to other patterns and you will be amazed at how much easier it will be to make the quilts.
