Quilts for Rosie: Paper Piecing Patterns from the '40s [Paperback] Review

Quilts for Rosie: Paper Piecing Patterns from the '40s [Paperback]Everyone that truly loves to paper piece should have this book!It does what many other books try to do, but don't. These are blocks from the WWII era, and There are two sizes for each of the many patterns, along with a short history. (it tells how to change sizes also).I made the "Army Star" right after i got the book, and got many complements on it before it went in the mail for a block exchange.
It was worth every cent, and it is one of the few in my collection I can say that about.

Product Description:
Help yourself to some beautiful quilts and grab a bit of war-time history, too!

Carolyn McCormick, author of Carolyn's Paper Pieced Garden and Hard Times, Splendid Quilts and inventor of the Add-A-Quarter ruler, creates another stunning paper pieced sampler. Twenty Kansas City Star patterns from the 1940s have been redrafted into 10-inch and 4-inch paper pieced patterns, giving the quilter the choice of a larger quilt or a miniature.

Instructions for projects such as sachets and trinket boxes are also included so the quilter has alternatives for using the blocks. Also included is how quilts were a part of World War II - quilts made by prisoners of war, Service Banners and how the war changed women's roles.

Instant Bargello (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Instant Bargello [Paperback]I have always liked the Bargello pattern when I used it in needlepoint or plastic canvas patterns.I definitely do not like it in a quilt. This book shows picture quilts changed into the Bargello pattern. It makes them hard to look at, in my opinion, and difficult to see what the picture actually is.

The book itself has six pages on basic quilting. The patterns give the finished size and a color photo of the quilt.A materials and cutting list is provided.Assembly instructions follow these lists. There are no graphics to show what the written steps are talking about. There are no quilting suggestions and the only finishing instructions are lay the quilt top on batting and backing, baste and quilt. Not much help for a beginner.

There are six projects and a two photo gallery of other quilts. There is a short bio on the author.

This is not a book I would recommend purchasing unless you are extremely excited about the Bargello look and have enough quilting experience that you don't need finishing suggestions.

A Year of Paper Piecing: 12 Sensational Seasonal Designs [Paperback]Calendar quilt patterns are usually very similar.BUT NOT THE CALENDAR QUILT PATTERNS in this book!!Bev inserts JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE in each of her monthly patterns (eg: instead of just a heart for Feb., she places a bouquet of roses tied with ribbon behind the heart; a delightful teapot and steaming cup for March has additional little cakes with clever embroidery added to the frosting; a lovely June wreath of roses with a bow adorn that block). And to top it off, when you are finished with each of these blocks, they add together to make a QUEEN sized quilt!!Or, if you don't want a big quilt, Bev gives directions to make a great interchangeable wall hanging.Great work, Bev.A GREAT buy for QUILT STORES -- Bev has a disclaimer that allows stores to use her blocks for BOM quilts.Check into that store owners.

Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs [Paperback]The floral designs in Jane Townswick's second Artful Appliqué book are beautiful, natural, and detailed. Never fear, Jane takes you step-by-step through her way of mastering this realism. While advising beginners to consult one of her previous books or another reference book for the basics of appliqué, she introduces many fantastic techniques to throw into your appliqué bag of tricks.

In this volume Jane introduces Scrapliqué, a technique for creating mosaic-like fabric compositions for your motifs without having to stitch tiny pieces together. There's also information on unit appliqué, where you can stitch an entire flower before stitching it to the background. Jane explains several advantages to this strategy.

The book has sections on color blending, free-form stems and branches, and a unique way of stitching sharp points. There's a gorgeous gallery of quilts and 12 floral blocks with step-by-step instructions and photos. You'll find anemone, camellia, iris, lady's slipper, pansies, sweet peas, and more!

A rich resource for the appliqué enthusiast.

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs Volume Four: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback] Review

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs Volume Four: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback]I have been eagerly anticipating the publication of a new quilting book and was very excited to see it finally available. I already own all of the other books in this series (Volumes 1, 2 and 3) and have been waiting for months for the publication of this volume.

Mary Covey''s latest volume in her Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs series is technically not a book, but rather separate sheets packaged in a box. This "book" has just been published by Martingale and Company and it promises to be as wonderful as the previous 3 volumes.

You may ask why I like these designs so much. Well, there are several reasons. I like the fact that these are continuous line designs. I am a 'hurry up' kind of gal and like to get things done quickly, before I lose interest, so... continuous line quilting designs are my favourite motifs to work with. I don't have to stop, re-position and start quilting again.

Now, sometimes you may want to do blocks separately. If this is the case, Mary has an answer for this too. For each continuous line design in the book, there is also a block design in various sizes. That's great, but what is even better is that she also provides corner triangles to match, so you're covered no matter where you want to quilt. Oh, did I mention that her border designs include turning the corner, so you are able to keep right on going up the side of your quilt without having to turn and match motifs? Yes, Mary has thought of everything.

Sometimes I have trouble determining where to start and how to follow a continuous line motif. Again, Mary comes to my rescue. She includes a 'start' point and has arrows and numbers for you to follow so you don't get confused stitching the patterns.

Another feature that I like in this series is that each design is on its own page. The pages open up and the border motif, with the turning corner and side repeat, are there. This is easier, and more accurate, to use than trying to trace a quilting design from a book.

Best of all is Mary''s choice of designs. I find her motifs easy enough for a beginner, yet interesting enough, and with enough variety, to complement any project.

Foundation Paper Pieced Stained Glass Quilts II [Paperback] Review

Foundation Paper Pieced Stained Glass Quilts II [Paperback]This is a book of patterns for quilts that resemble stained glass patterns to produce distinctive, colorful quilts of both traditional and dramatic new designs. This book contains some 36 squares that are described in great detail. These squares are then to be multiplied, perhaps using different colors and patterns, to cover the surface of the quilt.

Along with the patterns is a brief but fairly complete description of how to make the quile. This includes procedures for cutting out the patterns to the actual sewing.

This book is the second in a series produced by the same authors. The first volume, without the II in the title (ISBN: 1891497022) was so popular that these new patters were created.

Photo Fun: Print Your Own Fabric for Quilts & Crafts [Paperback] Review

Photo Fun: Print Your Own Fabric for Quilts & Crafts [Paperback]I purchased this book, because I was looking for a hobby.Something to use my computer and still be crafty.I experimented briefly with Scrapbooking, but it didn't suit my personality, but this book seemed to.The major problem was the inability to locate the inkjet fixative in my local stores, but after going through the book, it told me how to buy the supplies online, which I did.I did a test project and it worked perfectly.I have not performed any of the projects listed in the book yet, but I've used the book as a guideline and have created my own projects. This is great fun, even though it stresses the HP Printer, it works equally well with my Canon Printer. You can buy inkjet printable fabric sheets in the stores, but I liked this because Iam only limited by the printing size of my printer.I can use any fabric, not just the pre cut sizes.

Show Me How to Paper Piece [Paperback]I purchased Carol's book because I chose a very difficult fan design to use in a challenge quilt and needed to paper piece for accuracy.I had never tried to paper piece before because all the on-line instructions I found were contradictory and confusing. For me, this book was the best resource for learning to paper piece because the techniques are clearly shown in photos and instructions and the pre-printed papers for piecing are included.I normally learn best from a class where I can see techniques demonstrated, but this book is just like taking a class and my challenge quilt turned out perfect!

Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs, Vol. 2: Full-Size Patterns for Blocks and Borders [Paperback]I have had a short-arm home quilting system with a laser and pantograph shelf for only about 6 months now, so am a beginner at machine quilting.I find Mary's designs very easy to follow, and very well planned.Start and center lines are indicated on the papers, as well as lines for aligning the pattern to the border. She also includes numbers for learning the flow of the pattern.Best of all, her design sheets show you how to get around the corner of your quilted border! The designs range from all purpose scrolls and feathers to leaves and garden flowers, as well as more whimsical designs such as dogs and stars/moons.She includes sub-designs for corner squares and quilt blocks as well.I have several machine quilting books but but find myself relying almost exclusively on these designs!I am hoping the author creates another pattern packet soon!

Strips & Strings: 16 Sparkling Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Strips & Strings: 16 Sparkling Quilts [Paperback]This book is the best! I can't wait to make at least 3 of the quilts in this book. I like the fact that most of the quilts are in a size that I like to make(large lap size). Great way to use up the scraps or for those who just like the scrappy look. Strips are cut different widths, so you don't have to have any particular size of strip. Even a tiny piece will work! Seams don't line up, so this is great of beginners.
You will not be sorry, if you invest in this book!

A Bouquet of Quilts: Garden-Inspired Projects for the Home [Paperback] Review

A Bouquet of Quilts: Garden-Inspired Projects for the Home [Paperback]This is a marvellous book of -- unfortunately -- too few patterns.Japanese quiltmakers combine "new" traditional blocks such as baskets and log cabin with vintage-looking fabrics and somehow create really fresh-looking quilts.Cutting directions are a little clunky and pure applique would seem to be a lot simpler than some of the patchwork piecing that's shown.Nonetheless, some smaller versions of the quilts in the book are going to make it to my short list of projects to try.

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc! [Paperback] Review

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc [Paperback]This book has hundreds of design possibilities, all shown in grayscale diagrams. There are photographs of some of them made up, but for most of them you'll have to do your own color choices and placement. These blocks could be made up into bed-sized quilts, starting with large squares as building blocks, or into blocks to go into a quilt, or as a single smaller block as a wallhanging or other small quilt project. This is not for someone who needs handholding and precise step-by-step directions. But if you're confident in your own taste and able to make decisions for yourself as you go along, and can look at a block diagram and see how it should be sewn together, this offers you lots of options. All the blocks are made from simple units -- squares, four patches, "rail fence" units (two rectangles), and half-square triangles. The author gives you lots of possible ways to combine those units into quilt blocks of any size you choose, determined only by the size of square you start with. This is a book I'll return to again and again.

The latest trend in fabric is precut squares or rectangles. Layer Cakes from Moda are 10 inch squares. Sweet 16s from Maywood Studios are 9 inch x 11 inch rectangles. Marcus Brothers cuts their Spoonfuls into 8-1/2 inch squares. This book contains ideas for all these large squares. Or you can cut you own large squares. One Fat Quarter can be cut into four 8-1/2 inch squares. Making the designs even more flexible, these patterns will work for ANY SIZE SQUARE! The popular 5 inch charm packs will make a fun baby quilt size or table topper. Or maybe you have cut leftover fabrics from past projects into 4 inch or 6 inch squares (or any other uniform size). These patterns will work perfectly for those squares as well! You could even start with a 16 inch or 17 inch square and use one of these patterns to make a king size quilt. It just takes 36 squares of any size to make any or all of these quilts. This book contains instructions to make 238 quilts! All of the instructions are written for beginners. This book offers beginning quilters several benefits. The quilts are all made up of basic blocks. The fabric in the precut, prepackaged fabric bundles all match. The book describes several methods for organizing scrap quilts. Beginning quilters are introduced to the creative process of quilting. However, these quilts are not just for beginners. Experienced quilters can enjoy making a quick project as a gift or to experiment with new colors. This book takes quilters through four steps of basic quiltmaking. Step 1: Choose Your Pattern. Step 2: Organize Your Fabrics. Step 3: Sew Your Blocks Together. Step 4: Layout and Sew Your Quilt. Going through these steps involves quilters with the entire process of quilt making in a fun, simple way.Big Block Quilts contains patterns for 238 quilts with full color pictures of 21 of these patterns. See how similar patterns look in different colors, and see how the same fabrics look in different patterns. Nine by Nine: 9-patch Quilts, 9 Ways (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Nine by Nine: 9-patch Quilts, 9 Ways [Paperback]Three years ago, I started a guild, One Stitch at a Time, to make quilts for Habitat for Humanity and Love and Hugs.I wish I had had a copy of NINE BY NINE at that time. Many of the members were new to quilting and this book shows just how a simple patch can make a wonderful quilts.

Ms. Hershey shows the reader what a nine patch is and how, by using different fabrics, it can become beautiful patterns. The first four pages show nine different ways a nine patch can be made and turned to create different patterns. The next eleven pages covers quilting and finishing basics so you can learn how or brush up on the techniques.

There are fourteen projects which range in size from a table runner to a quilt that is 115 ½" square. Each pattern has a photo of the finished quilts, the finished quilt size and the finished block size that make up the quilt.A paragraph about the quilts begins each set of instructions. There is a materials list provided, along with general materials needed.Next, the blocks that make up the quilts are shown.Cutting directions come next, followed by how to make each block.Assembling the whole quilts, adding borders and finishing instructions are the final directions given.

This is a wonderful book and each quilt/table runner is something that will fit right into our charity work of giving to Habitat for Humanity.I will definitely take this book to our guild and have them use the patterns.
