Strips & Strings: 16 Sparkling Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Strips & Strings: 16 Sparkling Quilts [Paperback]This book is the best! I can't wait to make at least 3 of the quilts in this book. I like the fact that most of the quilts are in a size that I like to make(large lap size). Great way to use up the scraps or for those who just like the scrappy look. Strips are cut different widths, so you don't have to have any particular size of strip. Even a tiny piece will work! Seams don't line up, so this is great of beginners.
You will not be sorry, if you invest in this book!

Baby Wraps: Quick, Cuddly Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Baby Wraps: Quick, Cuddly Quilts [Paperback]Our guild, One Stitch at a Time, is always looking for quick, cuddly baby quilts as we make them for Love and Hugs (seriously ill children 0 - 18 years of age).BABY WRAPS is just such book.

There are eight quilts patterns, each quick and easy to make. The smallest is 34 x 37 inches (approximately) and the largest 43 x 52 inches. The most difficult thing about making these quilts is the appliqué.Otherwise, they are made with square, strips and triangle blocks. If you are not a quilter that likes/does appliqué, then look for fabric that already has the pattern on it.

Each project has a full color photo of the finished quilt plus its finished size and finished block size.A sentence or two is written about the quilt and then a paragraph is provided about how to choose the fabric.A materials and cutting list are found next and then the directions for making the blocks. All is written in a clear, easy to understand fashion.Assembling the quilt top, adding borders and finishing the quilt directions are also provided. All appliqué templates are included at full size so there is no need to run out to the copier shop before beginning your quilt.

The final page provides a bit of information about the author which I always love to read and find out how the got to be a published author/quilt maker. If you are looking for a quilt for your next child/grandchild, BABY WRAPS is a great book to have.

Super Quick Colorful Quilts [Paperback] Review

Super Quick Colorful Quilts [Paperback]I just picked this book up in a remainder and it was definitely worth the money.I have not yet made anything out of it.But I will.(Only 4 stars because I haven't tried to make anything).I look for quilt patterns that are effective but fast as I have limited time.If you are looking for complexity or a quilting challenge, this probably isn't the book for you.

A similar style to Wilkinson's "Quick and Easy Patchwork and Applique : 14 Lively Designs Using All Kinds of Applied Motifs" - patterns are a similar nature but not repeated (which is nice). When I picked up the book it didn't occur to me that I already own a book by her, but as I adore "Quick and Easy Patchwork and Applique" I can see why this one appealed to me.

Note Wilkinson edits this book (as well as "Quick and Easy Patchwork and Applique").The quilts are designed by a variety of UK quilters, designers, authors and teachers.

This book is split into four sections - Tips and Techniques, "Bright Colours", "Pastel Colours" and "Primary Colours".A bit of a furfy though as, once again, Wilkinson includes 4 alternative colour schemes for each quilt.A brilliant idea as it really gives you an understanding of how colour combinations affect the overall makeup of the quilt.

The tips and techniques appear quite thorough and good enough for a beginner. There are tips also throughout the patterns.

My biggest problem when choosing a book online is the inability to actually flip through the book to see if there really is anything I want to make.So I shall attempt to provide some descriptions of the quilts that particularly appeal to me...
- Candy Bars - "Hot pink fabric frames the colourful bars in this topper for a single bed. Very simple blocks are joined together in rows to make the bars, reminiscent of the most colourful jars in the sweet shop. Simple quilting completes the project, which took just twelve hours to make." - The prime example uses "at least nine" different pink, orange and mauve patterned fabrics that are then combined two to a square, sewn into horizontal bars. These bars are separated by hot pink strips. The quilt is finished with a wave or scalloped machine stitch across the quilt providing a modern feel. The alternative colour schemes include a denim variation "for a teenager".
- Whirligig Quilt - A windmill square using bright, modern colours, tied in the centres.
- Dotty Cot Quilt - A mix of soft pastels - blue, pink, green, yellow - to suit either boy or girl, finished size is 86x70 cm.Fabric is dots and plains arranged into 4 x 5 squares.Every other square is a single fabric with an appliqued circle. In between each is a large square with a small centre square in contrasting colour, tied in the centre.
- Sherbet Twist - "Mouth-watering colours, a broderie anglaise frill and a scattering of mother-of-pearl buttons make this lap quilt the perfect treat for a sweet little girl."Three strips of each contrasting pastel pair (yellow with purple, green and pink, blue and orange) is arranged length wise down the quilt, separated by single strips of white fabric. The colour bands are quilted down the length (like "tubes" with a puffy eiderdown effect) but the white is tied with buttons down the length.A lace border surrounds.Alternative colour schemes include patterns and florals.
- Chenille Hearts - "The chenille technique, also known as "slashing", is a great way to use up all those ugly fabrics from your stash - when they're used for the lower layers, they don't show but add to the felted edges when cut and washed. This technique makes quite a heavy quilt as it's made up of four layers but it is very soft and cozy."Finishe size is 96.5 x 85.5 cm.Basically it is a purple quilt with 12 hearts from three colours (green, yellow, pink) arranged symmetrically across the top. However, it is made from three top layers of fabric (purple and pink) over one background piece (purple). The layers + hearts are then sewn (quilted) in parallel diagonals every .75 cm.The top three layers + hearts are then "slashed" or cut between the stitching (so it is cut on the bias).Once washed, you are left with a soft, felted quilt.

Sweet and Simple Baby Quilts [Paperback] Review

Sweet and Simple Baby Quilts [Paperback]Ms Hickey has some really interesting ideas of how to showcase novelty fabrics in a baby, or even wall, quilt that are striking
and very pretty. Her directions are good & there are an arrangement of difficult to very easy quilts listed.
The only flaw to the book would be a good source of where or what these novelties are called and could be found. But I guess you could use it just as a starting place and not as an exact duplicate.Really recommended.

Quick Colorful Quilts for Babies And Toddlers [Paperback] Review

Quick Colorful Quilts for Babies And Toddlers [Paperback]This book offers inspiration and instructions for colorful quilts for babies and toddlers. I'm in the process of making the cover quilt. I had a problem at first with the frame pieces. The book shows templates for these pieces but they have to be enlarged. You can imagine the mistake I made. I would recommend the author and editor test the instructions on less experienced quilters.

Warm Welcome: Cozy Quilts for Baby (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Warm Welcome: Cozy Quilts for Baby [Paperback]I need 36 hours in one day to work on all the quilts in this book that I want to make.Oh where do I start? With 17 quilts, it will be hard to pick one to start with.

A 16-page section on the basics of quilting begins the book.Things like what foot to use, how to do appliqué, binding and tags are among the hints and how-to's you will find here. Each project begins with a paragraph about the quilts followed by a material and cutting list.A page is devoted to a photo of the finished quilt and the block and finished quilt size are also given.

Making the blocks is explained next and graphics help to show what is being sewn.Finishing the quilts is pretty much left up to your individual tastes and desires but the area in the basics sections on preparing to quilt gives a fair overview of what to do.

Between the dominoes, tents, airplanes, kittens, shoes and rainbows - to name a few - I will be in 7th Heaven making quilts for the next few months! There is even a basket pattern that is made from strips so no curves to deal with.Plus the rest are made with strips and triangles - no difficult or odd pieces unless you count appliqué figures.

Either way, these quilts are perfect for beginners or a guild making charity quilts.I will be sure to take my copy to my guild.

Baby's First Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Baby's First Quilts [Paperback]Like all good quilting books, this one starts out with a section on choosing fabric and how to personalize your quilt.Tools needed and quilting basics are the next sections and cover such things as rulers, matching seams and chain piecing. In the Finishing Techniques section, there is a very good idea on how to make a light table with things you already have in your home just in case you don't own one.

A baker's dozen of quilt patterns are written in language that is easy to understand and has plenty of graphics of the steps so you can see if you are reading the written words correctly. There is a list of the materials needed and how to cut the fabric. There is also a photo of the finished quilt with the finished quilt size and finished block size being listed.A small paragraph about the quilt is also given.Making the blocks, assembling the quilt and finishing suggestions complete the patterns instructions.

Ms. Martin has chosen fun fabrics for the shown quilts such as blocks with alphabet letters or piggies playing. There are also quilts with retro fabric and even ones that use up all those left over bits and pieces.

The last page has a photo of the author along with two paragraphs about her.

Even More Quilts for Baby: Easy As ABC [Paperback] Review

Even More Quilts for Baby: Easy As ABC [Paperback]10 different quilts each photographed in bold colors and then in soft pastels. This is an awesome detail because you would not believe how different each pattern looks just switching between bold and soft colors!!
The quilts are listed from easiest to "most difficult", but even the most difficult one could still be completed by a first time quilter!!The patterns are beautiful yet so simple to create.
Instructions for each quilt are very clear and easy to follow. The book even suggests which way to iron each and every seam!!
The instructions for each pattern will only make a "baby" size quilt, but because the instructions are so well laid out (especailly the material requirements) it is VERY easy to adapt the instructions to make a larger size quilt. (So it goes far beyond baby quilts!!!)
Oh, and did I mention how easy, Easy, EASY these quilts are to make??? The truly great thing about them though is they look far more sophisticated and complicated than they really are!
You will not be disappointed with this book!

Baby Quilts: 15 Original Designs for Every Nursery Decor [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

Baby Quilts: 15 Original Designs for Every Nursery Decor [Paperback]I have used this book for two quilts. Both of which turned out to be very cute. Hopefully I'll use it for many more. The directions are clear and simple, the pictures are bright, and the layout is perfect. There are quite a few applique patterns for those who like that type of work. I don't, so a lot is wasted on me. However it's still worth purchasing if you're looking for some really cool baby's or kid's quilts. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
