Daddy's Ties [Paperback] Review

Daddy's Ties [Paperback]I found there was not enough information about the pattern.I wanted to make a necktie quilt for my grandson from his late father's ties, displaying the whole tie, not cutting the material up.I found a pictureof an example of a completed quilt like I wanted to make (A Lifetime ofTies), but no information such as the length to cut the ties. I figured itout, but it may be more difficult to someone with less experience.--HelenB. age 92

Sew One And You're Done: Making a Quilt from a Single Block (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Sew One And You're Done: Making a Quilt from a Single Block [Paperback]Quilters know that friends who don't quilt and even those who do love receiving quilts as presents. I love making quilts for presents, but unfortunately, I don't have time to make complicated block by block quilts. This book takes pretty, traditional mostly star blocks and enlarges them so that one block becomes a lap size quilt. Most are approximately 50" x 50" when finished. The center squares are usually about 12", so for the more ambitious, a pretty block that you have made can become the center. I particularly like the Star Within a Star pattern, which is the traditional carpenter's star block, enlarged. I have made this in traditional Amish colors (black background, light and dark purple for the star) for my son for Christmas and another in contrasting floral color for a friend. WHen finished, it is a very striking single star quilt, suitable for a wall hanging. The directions for all of the quiltsare good and easy to follow. The technique used is rotary cutting and piecing -- no templates, no paper piecing. The book is suitable for quilters of all levels.

Sweet and Simple Baby Quilts [Paperback] Review

Sweet and Simple Baby Quilts [Paperback]Ms Hickey has some really interesting ideas of how to showcase novelty fabrics in a baby, or even wall, quilt that are striking
and very pretty. Her directions are good & there are an arrangement of difficult to very easy quilts listed.
The only flaw to the book would be a good source of where or what these novelties are called and could be found. But I guess you could use it just as a starting place and not as an exact duplicate.Really recommended.

Copy Cat Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Copy Cat Quilts [Paperback]I was excited when I found COPY CAT QUILTS.As a cat lover, I couldn't wait to see all the patterns for cat quilts Ms. Navarro put in her book.Alas, I was disappointed. There were really only two patterns.True, there are six different projects but only the two different cat patterns.I don't need a book to tell me that I can take four blocks and make a pillow instead of a quilt or decrease the size of the "cat" to make a smaller quilt.

With that said, I do LOVE the cat pattern that she has designed. It even comes with a stuffed ball at the feet of each cat.I would be "lazy" and stuff a yo-yo rather than go through the trouble of sewing two circles, turning and stuffing. After all, the opening of the yo-yo will be placed faced down and the ball sewn around to attach it to the quilt.

I am glad to see the cat is all pieced, not paper pieced and while there are a lot of pieces to make each cat, he does turn out very cute.Embroidery is used to complete his face so you can make your cats happy, sad or mischievous. The projects all have material and cutting lists and instructions on how to put the blocks together.Ms. Covey has left the quilting pattern to finish the quilt up to you.

The Feline Dolls cat has the template included in the book which is the second pattern I referred to earlier. If you are a quilter that thinks "outside the box", then this book might be a bit disappointing. But if you are the type of quilter that needs detailed instructions to make each and every item you quilt, then this book will give you six wonderful projects to work on.

Quilts from the Heart II (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Quilts from the Heart II [Paperback]18 brightly colored quilts to make by piecing and appliqué and embellish with embroidery is what you will find in QUILTS FROM THE HEART II.

A Baker's Dozen of pages begins the book with the basic quilting information. But it goes one step farther by including wonderful tips like how to determine yardage for Fussy Cutting a fabric in bright red dashed boxes. There is also a photo of a cute label to use to make your quilt one of a kind.

Each project has a full page color photo of the finished quilt.A paragraph about the quilt begins the actual instructions along with the finished block and quilt size. Then comes the materials and cutting list; followed by the assembly instructions.Plenty of graphics are shown so you can make sure the written steps are interpreted correctly.

Specific quilting patterns are not given for finishing the quilt. There are templates provided when needed but some need to be enlarged to use.The pieces to make the quilts are on the small side but you certainly could enlarge the pieces and just not make as many squares or you could make it a scrappy quilt and use up your "leftovers" from other quilts.A half page bio of the author is found at the end of the book.

Whether you choose to make a quilt "on point" or one that is "square", you will find lots of ideas in QUILTS FROM THE HEART II.

Warm Welcome: Cozy Quilts for Baby (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Warm Welcome: Cozy Quilts for Baby [Paperback]I need 36 hours in one day to work on all the quilts in this book that I want to make.Oh where do I start? With 17 quilts, it will be hard to pick one to start with.

A 16-page section on the basics of quilting begins the book.Things like what foot to use, how to do appliqué, binding and tags are among the hints and how-to's you will find here. Each project begins with a paragraph about the quilts followed by a material and cutting list.A page is devoted to a photo of the finished quilt and the block and finished quilt size are also given.

Making the blocks is explained next and graphics help to show what is being sewn.Finishing the quilts is pretty much left up to your individual tastes and desires but the area in the basics sections on preparing to quilt gives a fair overview of what to do.

Between the dominoes, tents, airplanes, kittens, shoes and rainbows - to name a few - I will be in 7th Heaven making quilts for the next few months! There is even a basket pattern that is made from strips so no curves to deal with.Plus the rest are made with strips and triangles - no difficult or odd pieces unless you count appliqué figures.

Either way, these quilts are perfect for beginners or a guild making charity quilts.I will be sure to take my copy to my guild.

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps [Paperback]What to do with the scraps from other quilts! That is always a question in a quilter's mind.BITS AND PIECES helps solve that problem. While the book is about making small quilts in the size range of 20" square, there is no reason you couldn't make several of the small quilts, put them together and make a bed sized one!A bit of sashing between each "quilt" and you have a large quilt instead. For example, in One Patch Garden, there are lots of colorful square with a border. So just make more squares from your leftovers and you have the bed quilt

Each pattern, of which there are 17, begins with a bit of information about the quilt. Then the size of the finished project is listed and a materials list is given. Cutting instructions come next followed by how to assemble the top and finishing directions. There are plenty of graphics to help you visualize what the instructions are telling you to do.And lots of tips are found in special boxes through out.

Your quilts will most likely not match the ones in the photos as your scraps are sure to be different than the author's.The quilts are divided into four types, those using squares and rectangles, those using triangles, those using diamonds and those using curves and circles with easy appliqué.This makes the book one in which everyone will find a project to their liking.

Even More Quilts for Baby: Easy As ABC [Paperback] Review

Even More Quilts for Baby: Easy As ABC [Paperback]10 different quilts each photographed in bold colors and then in soft pastels. This is an awesome detail because you would not believe how different each pattern looks just switching between bold and soft colors!!
The quilts are listed from easiest to "most difficult", but even the most difficult one could still be completed by a first time quilter!!The patterns are beautiful yet so simple to create.
Instructions for each quilt are very clear and easy to follow. The book even suggests which way to iron each and every seam!!
The instructions for each pattern will only make a "baby" size quilt, but because the instructions are so well laid out (especailly the material requirements) it is VERY easy to adapt the instructions to make a larger size quilt. (So it goes far beyond baby quilts!!!)
Oh, and did I mention how easy, Easy, EASY these quilts are to make??? The truly great thing about them though is they look far more sophisticated and complicated than they really are!

Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt and Patchwork Projects [Paperback] Review

Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt and Patchwork Projects [Paperback]I am a long-time quilter who loves modern patterns and innovative design; I was so excited to see this book. When it arrived I knew after flipping through it once that I would be returning it--and I never return quilt books. Be aware that hardly any of the patterns are for quilts--most are for household objects. And what's frustrating about those patterns for things like slippers is that they don't seem as though they would produce results that are going to hold up well.Oh well.I'd recommend that non-beginners skip this and get two great Kerr/Ringle books: Color Harmony for Quilters and The Modern Quilt Workshop instead.

Baby Quilts: 15 Original Designs for Every Nursery Decor [Paperback]I have used this book for two quilts. Both of which turned out to be very cute. Hopefully I'll use it for many more. I don't, so a lot is wasted on me. However it's still worth purchasing if you're looking for some really cool baby's or kid's quilts. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
