Designing Tessellations : The Secrets of Interlocking Patterns [Hardcover] Review

I'm a ceramic tile maker and have been trying to figure out Escher's designs, with only limited success.I have also had some unexpected mishaps with other types of tessellating tiles.So, I am really happy to have this book.It has helped me through the "gotchas" of makingtessellating designs, and has given me many other design ideas.
This bookis beautiful, well laid out, with excellent illustrations and pleny ofideas.The math employed is usually the minimal amount needed to get thejob done, although sometimes she does try to really explain the geometry.(That's where she loses me, but that's OK.I've had LOTS of successwithout understanding at that level). She explains concepts liketranslation, mid-point and corner rotation, glides, and mirroring in a waythat anyone (even the math challenged, like me!) can understand and workwith them.She also covers tessellations made from angles other than 90degrees (for example, from shapes like triangles, hexagons, kite shapes,etc.) for the adventurous spirited.
She includes exercises in case youwant to use the book as a textbook for yourself or a class. It doesn'tmatter whether you are making quilts, tiles or something else.Theconcepts and directions apply no matter what the medium.
Highlyrecommended for anyone who loves tessellations!

Coxcomb Variations [Paperback] Review

This is on my top 10 list for experienced quilters to have.I found it to be informative as well as very inspiring.Having a lot of time to sit and sew at my son's sports and orthodontic appointments, I have come to love applique.That being said, this book is my applique reference.Of course, I love how you can either follow the patterns exactly or change them to suit your style.I would highly recommend this book!

This book is really nice, very informative, laid-out well and its information is very clear and fairly easy to follow.While it's a textbook, and therefore its primary audience is students of design, a skilled sewer will find this book to be very helpful nontheless.It's definitely for the beginner pattern-maker, and that's why it's successful not only as a text book but as a simple instruction book as well.
It outlines a brief (i.e. a few paragraphs) history of pattern making.Then it outlines all the tools (oak tag, pattern paper, french curves, hip curves etc.) of pattern making and how those tools are used.Next the book discusses darts, gathers and other ways to fit and add fullness to garments.After these introductions to pattern-making and fitting, MacDonald addresses the basics of EVERY TYPE of garment you will ever want to make!Seriously.
She addresses bodices, variations on bodices, darting for different figures, and then goes on to sleeves (variations on sleeves include cowl, raglan, kimono, lantern, leg o mutton and more!).She addresses variations and fitting techniques for the following: bodices, sleeves, necklines, pants, shorts, skirts (every skirt you've ever heard of and some you haven't!), tunics and dresses, collars, cuffs and closures!
While some of the techniques are a little outdated fashion-wise, (lantern sleeves and sweet-heart necklines - yuck!) the important thing is that it teaches you how to make EVERYTHING which is great experience nonetheless.And once you're familiar with pattern making for the various pieces - you can use what you've learned to make EXACTLY what you want!
This is, in short, a very thorough and clear book.

This is a book of patterns for quilts that resemble stained glass patterns to produce distinctive, colorful quilts of both traditional and dramatic new designs.This book contains some 36 squares that are described in great detail. These squares are then to be multiplied, perhaps using different colors and patterns, to cover the surface of the quilt.

Along with the patterns is a brief but fairly complete description of how to make the quile. This includes procedures for cutting out the patterns to the actual sewing.

This book is the second in a series produced by the same authors. The first volume, without the II in the title (ISBN: 1891497022) was so popular that these new patters were created.

101 Log Cabin Flowers with full-size pattern for foundation piecing [Paperback] Review

The book contains 101 beautiful flower blocks, and instructions for 3 projects using these blocks.All blocks and projects are shown in full color.
I'm not a beginner paper (foundation) piecer so I didn't pay all that much attention to the directions at the beginning of the book, although at a quick glance, they do look quite detailed and well thought out, and there are lots of "how-to" drawings.
Block size is NOT shown on the individual patterns.The block sizes are listed in the General Directions at the beginning of the book.[I think they should be listed on each block - my memory isn't what it used to be].The color photograph of the block is not on the same page as the pattern, so you need to refer back and forth for color placement.There is a "grey tones" drawing for each pattern, but I don't find that very helpful - it should be in color (either a drawing or a photograph).Multi-piece patterns are NOT separated, and I find the bold lines (separating the pieces) hard to distinguish from the piecing lines.Seam allowances are also not included.Personally, I find it annoying to have to photocopy the pattern, then cut it apart and add (or account for when sewing) the seam allowance. Lots of people don't mind, tho, so I might be in the minority :).The assembly directions for multi-piece patterns are clearly diagrammed.
I like my patterns to be done a certain way, and in this book, they are not.However, I still love the book because the patterns and projects are gorgeous, and shown in full color.The patterns range from fairly simple to extremely detailed, so there is something for most skill ranges. If you like florals and you like paper (foundation) piecing, I think you'll enjoy the projects in this lovely book :)

Magical Four-Patch and Nine-Patch Quilts [Paperback] Review

Though I love her work, I am disappointed in Porcella's new book.Not only do the projects lack her work's usual vibrancy, but the diagrams and directions contain inaccuracies--for example, a drawing showsa strip of seven 2-inch squares as being the same length as a 20-inch strip.
It's too bad--I really looked forward to receiving the book. Oh well, maybe taht will teach me not to buy pre-pub.

More Nickel Quilts: 20 New Designs from 5-Inch Squares [Paperback] Review

This is a wonderful book, every bit as great as the first! The techniques are easy to follow, but are also enjoyable for more advanced quilters. It is an excellent way to use up scraps and More Nickel Quilts has more of a variety of color themes- brights, 30's, and more. It also has the math for each quilt in several sizes, so you can make a wall quilt or a queen size, which is nice. All the quilts are beautiful, it was hard to choose which one to start with! I'm making "Butterfly Waltz" right now and it is gorgeous; I can't wait to make the rest. You don't have to start with the first book, although it is a must have too!

Cat Quilts and Crafts [Paperback] Review

If you want templates for realistic cats, this is the book for you.The word "quilts" in the title is a misnomer!There are only a few pages in the entire book about quilts. The majority of the book is filled with page after page of templates.There are only about 22 pages in the beginning of the book dedicated to crafts.If you are a novice in sewing or crafts, this isn't the book for you.There are very few illustrations and those are not great quality - hard to figure out exactly what is what. The instructions are extremely short and very limited. Only an experienced crafter who LOVES realistic images of cats will find this book useful.

Copy Cat Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

I was excited when I found COPY CAT QUILTS.As a cat lover, I couldn't wait to see all the patterns for cat quilts Ms. Navarro put in her book.Alas, I was disappointed.There were really only two patterns.True, there are six different projects but only the two different cat patterns.I don't need a book to tell me that I can take four blocks and make a pillow instead of a quilt or decrease the size of the "cat" to make a smaller quilt.

With that said, I do LOVE the cat pattern that she has designed.It even comes with a stuffed ball at the feet of each cat.I would be "lazy" and stuff a yo-yo rather than go through the trouble of sewing two circles, turning and stuffing.After all, the opening of the yo-yo will be placed faced down and the ball sewn around to attach it to the quilt.

I am glad to see the cat is all pieced, not paper pieced and while there are a lot of pieces to make each cat, he does turn out very cute.Embroidery is used to complete his face so you can make your cats happy, sad or mischievous.The projects all have material and cutting lists and instructions on how to put the blocks together.Ms. Covey has left the quilting pattern to finish the quilt up to you.

The Feline Dolls cat has the template included in the book which is the second pattern I referred to earlier.If you are a quilter that thinks "outside the box", then this book might be a bit disappointing. But if you are the type of quilter that needs detailed instructions to make each and every item you quilt, then this book will give you six wonderful projects to work on.

with carol doak--i will never be able to make all the quilts her books inspire.

this newest offering is wonderful. her stars appear complex, but are easy to make with paper piecing. there are 24 blocks (too few! too few!), each named after a country, and nine quilt designs ranging from 25" square to 63" square.

the book includes thorough instructions for paper piecing, so even the quilter who hasn't tried this technique will have no trouble. there are excellent photos of the process. the author includes a short explanation of her design process, which will help the quilters who want to create their own designs.

there is also a section on designing settings which could apply to any type quilting. the instructions for the finished quilts include detailed instuctions, diagrams, and cutting charts, and a feature i haven't seen before--circles with the pertinent fabric next to the yardage requirements. now, no more guessing which is the 'light green' and which 'the medium green' the pattern calls for. there is also what seems to be the compulsory very short, useless section on making a quilt, covering (more or less) in three pages topics entire books have been written about.

the blocks are shown straight and on point, very useful. the finished quilts have charts showing alternate color ways, also very useful.

an added feature is the wonderful machine quilting by Kathryn Blais, that shows very clearly in the photos. lots of inspiration for the 'quilt as desired' part of the process.

a cd of 'the foundation factory' is included. i have made only one quilt using print outs from the 'foundation factory' included in a previous book, and there was a serious discrepancy in length between two sections that were to fit together. i had not had this problem when i photocopied the patterns for yet another project, using the same photocopier. i haven't printed out any other patterns, so i can't say if this is an peculiar occurance or a basic problem.

the cd aside, this is definitely another winner from doak.
