Quilts for Rosie: Paper Piecing Patterns from the '40s [Paperback] Review

Quilts for Rosie: Paper Piecing Patterns from the '40s [Paperback]Everyone that truly loves to paper piece should have this book!It does what many other books try to do, but don't. These are blocks from the WWII era, and There are two sizes for each of the many patterns, along with a short history. (it tells how to change sizes also).I made the "Army Star" right after i got the book, and got many complements on it before it went in the mail for a block exchange.
It was worth every cent, and it is one of the few in my collection I can say that about.

A Year of Paper Piecing: 12 Sensational Seasonal Designs [Paperback]Calendar quilt patterns are usually very similar.BUT NOT THE CALENDAR QUILT PATTERNS in this book!!Bev inserts JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE in each of her monthly patterns (eg: instead of just a heart for Feb., she places a bouquet of roses tied with ribbon behind the heart; a delightful teapot and steaming cup for March has additional little cakes with clever embroidery added to the frosting; a lovely June wreath of roses with a bow adorn that block). And to top it off, when you are finished with each of these blocks, they add together to make a QUEEN sized quilt!!Or, if you don't want a big quilt, Bev gives directions to make a great interchangeable wall hanging.Great work, Bev.A GREAT buy for QUILT STORES -- Bev has a disclaimer that allows stores to use her blocks for BOM quilts.Check into that store owners.

Foundation Paper Pieced Stained Glass Quilts II [Paperback] Review

Foundation Paper Pieced Stained Glass Quilts II [Paperback]This is a book of patterns for quilts that resemble stained glass patterns to produce distinctive, colorful quilts of both traditional and dramatic new designs. This book contains some 36 squares that are described in great detail. These squares are then to be multiplied, perhaps using different colors and patterns, to cover the surface of the quilt.

Along with the patterns is a brief but fairly complete description of how to make the quile. This includes procedures for cutting out the patterns to the actual sewing.

This book is the second in a series produced by the same authors. The first volume, without the II in the title (ISBN: 1891497022) was so popular that these new patters were created.

It's Raining Cats & Dogs: Paper-Pieced Quilts for Pet Lovers [Paperback] Review

It's Raining Cats & Dogs: Paper-Pieced Quilts for Pet Lovers [Paperback]This book has detailed colored pictures of all projects, and patterns that INCLUDE the seam allowance (my 2 most important factors in buying a paper piecing book).
Each project lists all the pertinent information you might require (i.e. quilt size, block size, fabric requirements, fabric cutting sizes). There are lots of tips and how-to's throughout the book, and "personalization" ideas are included for a number of the projects. The projects themselves are absolutely adorable.
Only one project in the book looked like it might be on the difficult side (Hanging BasKats) - the rest looked like they would be doable by most people with a little bit of sewing experience.

The color project pictures are all at the front, separate from the pattern/instruction pages, so it's sometimes necessary to go to the front of the book when working. Each project does clearly state where the colored photo is, but it would have been nice to have the color project photo WITH the project.
I certainly look forward to buying more books from this author and fellow cat lover :).

Paper-Pieced Mini Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Paper-Pieced Mini Quilts [Paperback]Paper piecing ---the minute I hear that, I quake in fear.BUT Ms. Vosters has written a book that just might change all that.Instead of trying to learn this technique onfull sized quilts, why not start small?I mean that's how we learned to walk --- taking baby steps!

This book provides 17 small projects all done by paper piecing. There is even a "picture-scape"!And the templates are full sized in the book so all you need to do is copy them and you have your templates ready to go.

Six pages of basic instructions tell you about the fabric, batting, how to paper piece and finishing techniques.Interspersed in this section are lots of tips so make sure to take the time to read this section before starting. Then pick out your projects and start sewing. Each project has a skill level at the very start giving you an idea of just how involved the project will be.There is a material and cutting list, along with assembling and finishing instructions. There is a color photo and a paragraph about the particular project.

If paper piecing is something you have always wanted to learn or, as in my case, have been afraid to try, this is a book to guild you step-by-step to achieving the skills to do it.Remember, we all started out walking by baby steps and making mini quilts will be the baby steps you need to learn paper piecing.

Mariner's Compass Stars: 24 Stellar Paper-Pieced Blocks & 9 Easy Quilt Projects [Paperback] Review

Mariner's Compass Stars: 24 Stellar Paper-Pieced Blocks & 9 Easy Quilt Projects [Paperback]with carol doak--i will never be able to make all the quilts her books inspire.

this newest offering is wonderful. her stars appear complex, but are easy to make with paper piecing. there are 24 blocks (too few! too few!), each named after a country, and nine quilt designs ranging from 25" square to 63" square.

the book includes thorough instructions for paper piecing, so even the quilter who hasn't tried this technique will have no trouble. there are excellent photos of the process. the author includes a short explanation of her design process, which will help the quilters who want to create their own designs.

there is also a section on designing settings which could apply to any type quilting. the instructions for the finished quilts include detailed instuctions, diagrams, and cutting charts, and a feature i haven't seen before--circles with the pertinent fabric next to the yardage requirements. now, no more guessing which is the 'light green' and which 'the medium green' the pattern calls for. there is also what seems to be the compulsory very short, useless section on making a quilt, covering (more or less) in three pages topics entire books have been written about.

the blocks are shown straight and on point, very useful. the finished quilts have charts showing alternate color ways, also very useful.

an added feature is the wonderful machine quilting by Kathryn Blais, that shows very clearly in the photos. lots of inspiration for the 'quilt as desired' part of the process.

a cd of 'the foundation factory' is included. i have made only one quilt using print outs from the 'foundation factory' included in a previous book, and there was a serious discrepancy in length between two sections that were to fit together. i had not had this problem when i photocopied the patterns for yet another project, using the same photocopier. i haven't printed out any other patterns, so i can't say if this is an peculiar occurance or a basic problem.

the cd aside, this is definitely another winner from doak.
