Ruth B. McDowell's Piecing Workshop: Step-by-Step Visual Guide Indispensable Reference for Quilters Bonus Projects [Paperback] Review

Ruth B. McDowell's Piecing Workshop: Step-by-Step Visual Guide Indispensable Reference for Quilters Bonus Projects [Paperback]Unfortunately I missed out on a live workshop with Ruth and sent my best buddy in my place instead. She LOVED it!!! Even though I tried to practice her techniques in her other books, I never quite 'got it'. I guess I'm just more of a 'show me what you do' kind of person.
This book changed all that and I made her sugar maple quilt quickly and easily and I'm thrilled with the outcome! Also, with her guidance on inset seams, I finished a difficult navajo quilt that had had me stumped because I couldn't get the seams set in just right. But with her latest book, it was like having this amazingly talented and wonderful lady right there with me! She is such inspiration, her quilts are outstanding and absolutely fabulous! Thanks Ruth, -can't wait for the next one!!!

Color Harmony for Quilts: A Quiltmaker's Guide to Exploring Color [Paperback] Review

Color Harmony for Quilts: A Quiltmaker's Guide to Exploring Color [Paperback]Read the book through once, then go back and really read it!
Not only do the authors show us their own quilts, they have showcased some of the best known, and unknown quilters intenationally. Every quilt is broken down as to which colors, values and proportions were chosen by the quilter...even the amount of black used in each quilt is represented on a scale. If youdon't like the colors the quilter chose, they give you at least 3-4 other colorways and designs to choose from for every quilt shown! I only wish I had this information when I began quilting. Now I know I can break out of the box and create quilts that are really mine.
Thank you Weeks and Bill.

Product Description:
The key element in putting a quilt design together is colour, yet many people do not have a good grasp of colour theory - from what colours best complement others to what type of mood each colour evokes. Quilting expert Barbara Albright leads readers through a clear explanation of colour theory and how it relates to quilting, complete with tips on how to combine the right colours to get the look you want. From there, she presents 15 colour adjectives chosen to represent different moods - whether dynamic, romantic or natural - and illustrates each with two actual quilt patterns that best illustrate each colour concept, along with 8 colour variations for each quilt. Covering the historical relevance as well as the patterns and techniques used for each quilt, Wright illustrates how variations in colour, size and placement affect the mood of the finished piece.

Passionate Patchwork: Over 20 Original Quilt Designs [Hardcover] Review

Passionate Patchwork: Over 20 Original Quilt Designs [Hardcover]If you're a color junkie, if the sight of a newly-opened six-row box of Crayolas leaves you breathless, and if you walk through fabric stores just for the color hit, then "Passionate Patchwork" is a book for you. Without a doubt, the projects in this book are made up in the most sophisticated and exciting palettes ever seen in a quilt book. And the quilts--all of which look eminently doable, even by a rank beginner--are photographed in such lush, visually sumptuous settings that you can happily spend hours simply "reading" the photos. The other thing I like about this book is that these quilts are quite possible. We are not talking about quilts with 75 differently shaped chunks of fabric that must be pieced into each block. These quilts are not exercises in perfectionistic anality, but are made of simple geometric shapes that let the fabric do the talking, and leave the quiltmaker with sanity intact. Admittedly, one of the authors does have a signature line of fabric, and many quilts photographed make extensive use of that line. But any quilter's fabric stash already contains many comparable textiles that could be put to more sophisticated use, in exciting new combinations shown in this book. Several of the quilts in this book make use of "orphan" blocks that are showcased by being re-set with imaginative new uses of color and fabric pattern. This seems a respectful use and transformation of handwork from earlier times: the newly-made quilts look fresh and exciting, even when they used segements of old cliche patterns such as wedding ring and grandmother's flower garden. But you don't have to be a quilter to love this book. Although it has simple, easy-to-follow diagrams and directions for each product, the book could just as well appeal to knitters, painters, weavers, decorators or anyone else with a love of and appetite for color used creatively. I have already picked out my next few quilting projects inspired by this book. (The "rice bowl" and "hatbox" quilts are particularly compelling). That I would use quilts in this book as a model is certainly something I could not say for nine out of every ten other quilting books published. But ``Passionate Patchwork" has sophistication and verve, appealing to both the traditional quilter and and the fans of the cutting-edge contemporary. Bottom line? I love this book.

French Braid Obsession: New Ideas for the Imaginative Quilter [Paperback] Review

French Braid Obsession: New Ideas for the Imaginative Quilter [Paperback]I have the first book by this author and have made two quilts from it. They are fun and impressive in their construction. I was hoping for many more new ideas with her second book and was disappointed to find that the first 37 pages repeat methods from the first book. So if you don't own the first book, you really can get away with buying just this second book. And if you already own the first book, just be forewarned that the second one repeats a LOT of the first one!

Design and Make Your Own Contemporary Sampler Quilt (Dover Needlework Series) [Paperback] Review

Design and Make Your Own Contemporary Sampler Quilt [Paperback]I make large quilts based on single block themes, something about which this book talks about.I learned alot of pointers, and I have to say if I wrote a "how to" book,I would aspire to write something clear and uncomplicated as this author manages to descibe her techniques and ideas.
Its a smart purchase,if you want direct, yet a different understanding of how to design your own work.Even measurements for fabrics are simple to understand, and very easilly understood for someone who wants to try designing their own work. The Author gives many examples of how certain 4,5,9 patch designs can be elaborated into a lage bed spread.Very nice diagrams too!On the whole,I would say to another quilter,if you have made 4 or 5 quilts, and are looking for a next step up in your techniques, this book might be enough to keep you happy in your work for another couple of years.I wish I wrote it.

Stitch 'n Flip Quilts: 14 Fantastic Projects [Paperback] Review

Stitch 'n Flip Quilts: 14 Fantastic Projects [Paperback]Here are some excerpts from my review of this book. You can see the complete review on the Quilter's Review website.
"Every once in a while I read a book that inspires me to put aside all my works in progress to start something completely new. This is one of those books....
"Stitch 'n Flip combines techniques of paper piecing and log cabin. But it is easier than paper piecing in several ways. Instead of paper, Stitch 'n Flip uses a muslin foundation that becomes a permanent part of the quilt, so you don't have to tear out all the paper after sewing and assembly....
"Like the log cabin block, the center piece determines the next piece to be attached, so the pieces are assembled clockwise or counterclockwise around the center piece. The difference is that the center piece is not always square. Because of this difference, each quilt you make using this technique can look completely different....
"If you want to try something different, try this new, easy method and produce a quilt that looks much harder to make than it is. Check out Valori Wells' Stitch 'n Flip!"

Amish Wall Quilts: 15 Brilliant and Beautiful Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Amish Wall Quilts: 15 Brilliant and Beautiful Quilts [Paperback]Rachel Pellman is a Mennonite dealer in amish quilts and she gives a very dutiful account of the Amish lifestyle as a n introduction. She then goes into the quilts breaking them up into geographic location and laying out the colour, piecework patterns and then quilting motifs for you to make an authentic Amish legacy wall-hanging quillt.
I have another one of Pellman's books and the big difference here is one of course the size, most are 47x47 inches and two the use of colour. Most of Pellman's books are black and white but this one is in full colour which is rather funny because once you see these quilts in colour you realise why the cheaper black and white can be used. But still seeing the colour spectrum as the Amish use it is very helpful and cannot be discounted. It's a good reference there just on the colour motifs and how to build or identify an Authentic Amish quilt (Center diamond should be in what colours and what quilting style for example).
Because everything is in the authentic mode, Pellman does not mention anything about machine piecing or quilting, but then you should have Hargreave's book, the definitive source, so you'll never have to care. The instructions are fine, I used them to make 2 quilts, but in the end it's rather plain being Amish all the time (remember no patterns :-).
Still it seems to be comprehensive and answer all of your questions except that I think it should have had some of the quilts as samples so we could see how the various pieces do fit together and look. It's a workmanlike book, not very inspired.

Visual Coloring: A Foolproof Approach to Color-Rich Quilts [Paperback] Review

Visual Coloring: A Foolproof Approach to Color-Rich Quilts [Paperback]This is well produced book with lots of colour photos illustrating Joen's excellent colour sense. It is rather limited in scope, however.
After the introductory chapters on the usual analyses of good design features (fairly brief), the rest of the book illustrates basically one point. That is, you can analyse all the range of colour and value in a source photo to produce a quilt that resonates with the same colours and balance of contrast. Some of the quilts are stunning, particularly one of a bull, using mainly browns. It was seeing that in the 'excerpt'on amazon, that made me buy the book.

Radiant New York Beauties: 14 Paper-Pieced Quilt Projects [Paperback] Review

Radiant New York Beauties: 14 Paper-Pieced Quilt Projects [Paperback]Valori Wells is a woman of many talents, a photographer as well as a quilter, and with a keen eye for color and line. The designs and colors of her new book featuring the New York Beauty block are absolutely luscious - deep and rich and complex, with a new surprise and delight on every page. This demanding block, like its sister the Mariner's Compass, presents difficulties in construction (matching points and all that nonsense), but Wells has the answer - paper piecing - and the book provides foundations for the quilt projects and gives permission for their reproduction. The book is sprinkled with "mini-lessons" on specific techniques, and with the author's photographs, especially of plants, from which she gets many of her inspirations. All I can say after drinking in the beauty in this book is "Wow!"
