9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day [Paperback] Review

My private stash is loaded with large-scale fabrics. I just can't seem to resist buying stunning African, Asian, Hawaiian, seasonal, juvenile, and floral fabrics. I loved them when I bought them and abhor the thought of cutting them into small pieces.

With Judy Sisneros' 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day, I can use these beautiful fabrics to make scrumptious quilts for my children and grandchildren. And because the projects are easy (not to mention fun) and fast, those numerous family members won't have to wait in line as long for "their" special quilt.

Every quilt in Sisneros' collection is a combination of solid pieces of fabric and Nine-Patch blocks (with the occasional Rail Fence block). The quilt patterns are beginner friendly but experienced quilters will have fun also. All the quilts consist of a focus fabric and a minimum of three companion fabrics.

If you want to piece a quilt in one day, 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day would be a good book to use as a guide or for actual patterns. The directions are clear, concise and easy-to-follow. The quilts are lovely patterns that everyone would love to have. I'm making Oriental Flight. It's set on point and I'm using some of the beautiful Asian cotton fabric I bought in various Asian countries.

Picture Play Quilts [Paperback] Review

If you're looking for a simple quilt to give as a gift, this is the book for you. The best part is picking out all the fabrics to make all the "I Spy" squares. Once you cut them into the squares, you just need to arrange them. My daughter (age 8) and I have put together two quilts. She really loves doing the arranging while I do the sewing and ironing.
The book has full color photos so you can get ideas about how to finish the quilt. The instructions are well written.

Bella Bella Quilts: Stunning Designs from Italian Mosaics [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

Firstly, this book is probably not for the novice quilter--there are some easier designs, and suggestions for simplifying patterns, but the directions do assume a general knowledge of the craft.

However, there's a lot that any quilter can learn from this book; it's filled with beautiful quilts with interesting designs taken from Italian mosaics.In fact, it's also loaded with pictures of the original mosaics that inspired the quiltds, and a short history lesson on the origin of the mosaic patterns.

Aside from the inspiration of just paging through looking at pretty pictures, I found a lot to admire in the thought Norah McMeeking obviously put into this book.Each section begins with a nice photo of the quilt and then some helpful design suggestions--ways to vary the pattern and make it your own.There's also several line drawings of possible design/color variations to help you visualize your options.Then comes a list of fabric requirements and directions, including illustrations of any special/new techniques and lastly, suggestions for quilting methods that would look good.All the templates and foundations are presented in a pullout section at the end of the book, which is so much handier than trying to trace them off of book pages.

All in all, this a well conceived and well executed quilt book.In all likelihood I won't attempt to recreate one of these quilts, but I do see myself using bits and pieces in my own quilts.It's a good book to add to my reference library.

One-Block Wonders: One Fabric, One Shape, One-of-a-Kind Quilts [Paperback] Review

The author has done a fantastic job of showing what you can do with one fabric and make it different from you basic "stack and slash" variety of quilts.Lots of examples and clear directions should allow both the novice and experience quilter to have a wonderful time making these quilts.I especially like the examples that show the original fabric!It's amazing how much her colorwash technique of the blocks makes the basic fabric evolve into something else completely!

One of the few quilting books I've read from cover to cover!Can't wait to try different fabrics to create quilts from subtle and mushy to bold and dramatic!Already looking at the fabric in the quilt shops with a whole new mind set!

Fun with One Block Quilts: 12 Projects in Multiple Sizes from 1 Simple Block [Paperback] Review

I bought this book in January of 2008 and took a class from Cheryl.I had no previous quilting experience at all. Very easy to follow directions ....
I completed my first quilt in a month, working in the evenings after work and on the weekends when I wasn't traveling to basketball games.In February my daughter who was at college came home for a visit...she wanted a quilt.I gave her the basic one block and told her to design her quilt and I would make it for her, (thinking it would be a simple design) she went back to college and the next day I received an e-mail with her design using the one block, wow what a design it was.I went from a beginner to an advanced design immediately.Still the basics applied and the quilt was quickly completed.If you are thinking of starting a quilt this is a great block to learn.

Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

with lots of applications.

there are a lot of examples of kay nichols' one fabric quilts that show the possiblities of her technique, but, of course, the idea can be used in quilts with more than one fabric.

she shows how clever piecing can expand the use of all those gorqeous border stripe fabrics. the results are surprising and beautiful. some very precise quilters might not be completely satisfied with the way patterns can meet at the miters without more planning than the author suggests, but this technique can result in a very lovely, reasonably easy quilt.

the quilts in the book range from the romantic to the funky. the photographs and digrams are very clear. the instructions are clear and detailed, though i wouldn't suggest this for a beginner. some experience with piecing is necessary. only general suggestions for quilting and binding the finished top are given, which is fine with me, as this is a book on piecing technique. more information on finishing a quilt is available in many other books.

this book definitely belongs in a quilter's library--not just for the one fabric quilts presented, but as an inspiration to try the technique on other types of prints and include it in multi-fabric quilts.
