9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day [Paperback] Review

My private stash is loaded with large-scale fabrics. I just can't seem to resist buying stunning African, Asian, Hawaiian, seasonal, juvenile, and floral fabrics. I loved them when I bought them and abhor the thought of cutting them into small pieces.

With Judy Sisneros' 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day, I can use these beautiful fabrics to make scrumptious quilts for my children and grandchildren. And because the projects are easy (not to mention fun) and fast, those numerous family members won't have to wait in line as long for "their" special quilt.

Every quilt in Sisneros' collection is a combination of solid pieces of fabric and Nine-Patch blocks (with the occasional Rail Fence block). The quilt patterns are beginner friendly but experienced quilters will have fun also. All the quilts consist of a focus fabric and a minimum of three companion fabrics.

If you want to piece a quilt in one day, 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day would be a good book to use as a guide or for actual patterns. The directions are clear, concise and easy-to-follow. The quilts are lovely patterns that everyone would love to have. I'm making Oriental Flight. It's set on point and I'm using some of the beautiful Asian cotton fabric I bought in various Asian countries.

No color, no patterns, no quilt specifics.Just general Amish-info.Mostly talks about present-day quilting for sales to tourists, polester batts and poly-cotton fabrics, as though more traditional quilts are just history.
If you're a quilter, spend a few dollars more to own intriguing and satisfying books --e.g, *****Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: 90 color photos which clearly show every great color combination and quilting pattern + dimension, date, fabric info, etc. Any quilt pictured can go straight to big-bed size w/ application of a little arithmetic.Also gives us a new appreciation of cotton chambrays & simple warm baby quilts.

336 Ten-Minute Quilt Blocks: to Foundation-Piece, Quick-Piece, NoSew Applique, Stamp, Stencil, Paint & Embellish [Paperback] Review

I purchased this book, sight unseen, because I am a collector of quilt block books. I love reviewing the books and planning my next project, this book, claiming to have '336' quilt blocks seemed to be ideal. Well, I was wrong. Dead Wrong.
The layout of this book is TERRIBLE. It features six eye-poppingly colorful blocks per page which most of which are not pieced, but are merely DRAWN. There are illustrations which claim to be patterns but there are no actual measurements included. Sure, this looks good....But...The reader is left wondering how to put it all together.
I think it is disingenuous NOT to show completed pieced blocks in a quilt block book or measurements. I probably will try to put a couple of the "Tree" blocks together, but I think it will be challenging.
Recommended: No. A good 'idea' book, but not for careful piecers, and certainly NOT easy to complete in 10 minutes!

Finish It with Alex Anderson: 6 Quilt Projects Choose the Perfect Border Options for Edges [Paperback] Review

Whenever you begin to learn a new skill -- whether it's cooking, quilting, or computer programming -- the best asset to have is a friend standing next to you, showing you the details. ("No, move it more to the left!" or "The dough should feel like _this_.") Alas, we don't always have someone to call upon, so we turn to books written by experts. Often, they know their skill... but are imperfect at getting the point across.

That's not a problem here. "Finish It With Alex Anderson" is very much like having a friend standing at your side. While it includes 6 full quilt projects (they're nice, but not astonishing), the primary emphasis of this book is on -- as promised -- the steps in finishing a quilt, making good design choices for borders and other "edgy" issues.

I'm a rank beginner at quilting, and I've gotten confused over the stupidest things. For example, I know that it's easy to miter corners on the binding... once you know how. Most books give an arm wave to what's involved, as if you've seen it done and simply need a reminder. Alex Anderson's shows several different ways to bind a quilt, with so many pictures that I can't do it wrong. And, in fact, I didn't; my binding looks great, and I finally understand what I'd missed before.

Great book. This one won't get far from the sewing machine.

Big Book of Small Quilts (For the Love of Quilting) [Paperback] Review

For some years now, I've been waiting for new books by Berg, Von Holt and Johnson. The three authors wrote two excellent books for quilters:
"Little Quilts" and "Celebrate with little quilts". These were inspiring
books for quilters who want to sew quilts from traditional American block
patterns.
Recently I found what I've been waiting for: the "Big Book of Small Quilts". This book by Mary Hickey continues in the style of the "Little quilt books". The instructions are easy to follow; the patterns are traditional block patterns; and the size of the quilts are small, so the results may be enjoyed in a short while.
I am very happy to recommend this book!

There are eight quilts patterns, each quick and easy to make.The smallest is 34 x 37 inches (approximately) and the largest 43 x 52 inches.The most difficult thing about making these quilts is the appliqué.Otherwise, they are made with square, strips and triangle blocks.If you are not a quilter that likes/does appliqué, then look for fabric that already has the pattern on it.

You make a quilt but at the same time teach the child to count, learn their colors, teach them table manners and learn about textures and shapes.The book begins with a 7 page section on preparation for the projects and contains such things as gathering supplies and selecting fabrics.

The projects themselves have a photo of the finished item and a paragraph about the quilt.Finished block and quilt size are also provided.A materials and cutting list is clearly written as is the instructions for making the blocks and putting it all together.Lots of graphics help make sure you understand the writing directions.

Rolling Along: Easy Quilts from 2 1/2" Strips : Jelly Roll Friendly [Paperback] Review

This book has a number of good designs, but I think it's misleading to call it Jelly Roll friendly.Very few of the designs would make efficient use of the number of strips contained in a Jelly Roll -- you'd either need more strips, or additional fabric (FQs or something) or you'll end up with strips left over.A much better book, with designs which use the Jelly Rolls more efficiently, is Jelly Roll Quilts by the Lintotts, mother and daughter.I can't remember the mother's first name, but the daughter's is Nicky.It's available here on Amazon.

Lots of Scraps: It's Time to Quilt [Paperback] Review

I've never been comfortable quilting with scraps but this book may make me a believer.I had a chance to preview this book at a quilt meeting and loved some of the designs.I'm glad to add the book to my library.There's something for everyone:bed quilts, baby quilts, table runners, wall hangings, tote bags.The pidturs are beautiful and the instructions are clear.The only improvement I can think of would be the addition of quilting ideas for the projects.

The United States Patchwork Pattern Book [Paperback] Review

I purchased this book to assist me in making better quilt blocks. However, I was very disappointed that block measurements were NOT given. Block patterns were supposed to be transferred to fabric, but did not include the measurements of each section. This was frustrating if you are a careful piecer and want to make sure each block is the correct size and don't like to trace. Instead, the piecer is forced to trace every section, which isn't practical for larger-sized quilts.
The lack of block dimensions made this book frustrating for me.I would recommend it only for people who like to trace, and don't mind the extra chore of photocopying the patterns, adding seam allowances etcetera before getting started.

Strip-Easy Quilts [Paperback] Review

STRIP EASY makes cutting patchwork squares as easy as can be.You simply sew strips of fabric together and then cut the patches required for the quilt.Ms. Meunier shows us nine different quilts that can be created with this technique.

A page of general directions is included and a page on how to piece the Drunkard's Path block is also given.For those of us not used to doing anything but straight lines, this page is especially helpful.While I am not a particular fan of the colors used in the quilts as they are show. I can certainly see the wonderful patterns and will be sure to make them using my own color style.

Each pattern has a materials list, cutting instructions and directions.The book doesn't have all the instructions in one place.That is, the layout artist is still thinking in the "above the fold" newspaper mentality of 20 years ago and uses the "continued on" direction instead of putting all the instructions for one quilt continuously. People don't want to have to hunt for the "rest of the story".It was most likely done this way so that each facing page would show a full-size quilt photo and the beginning instructions. Using another colorway would prevent this, as well as using smaller photos and placing the templates with the instructions rather than putting these things on a page farther back in the book.
