Black Threads: An African American Quilting Sourcebook [Hardcover] Review

Black Threads: An African American Quilting Sourcebook [Hardcover]I can't say enough about the importance of this book.Every one who is interested in acquiring a true perspective on the diverse history of American quiltmaking and the role that African American quilters played in that history must own a copy of this book.Kyra Hicks spent many years tracing information about African American quilters that would otherwise soon be lost to us all. She has been diligent, careful and intensely rigorous as a scholar--and, she took this on as a true labor of love.Althugh she received some support from a national organization, Kyra Hicks used personal funds and many unpaid hours to complete this project.
The book istself is extremely well organized, and provides a wealth of detail and resources.Anyone planning to give a lecture or write an article about the history of quiltmaking will find material here that would be very difficult to access otherwise.
This book is also important becasue too many of the other books and articles only focused on the improvisational string quilt or improvisational patchwork quilt, which is only one genre of African American quilt making.Kyra clearly documents that African American quilters worked and continue to create quilts in all forms and genres.
The book has chapters documenting the influence that quilting has had on other artists and art genres as well. One of the remarkable images is that of a quilt designed by Romare Bearden, an internationally known African American artist who is generally known as one of the premier collagists of the 20th Century.
Kyra also conducted extensive online surveys of quilters, and documented very interesting facts about the enormous buying power of African American quilters in the United States. This material alone is worth the price of the book to companies that sell fabric and patterns to the quilt market.
My only regret is that the book had only a few color images.I wish that the publisher would have Kyra create a companion book in color with more of the images of the unique and unusual quilts and lesser known quilters she found.
Finally, the book is a comprehensive reference to galleries and collections for those who wish to explore the owrld of African American quiltmaking further.Buy and keep this book on your shelf--it will be useful and remarkable reading for years to come.

Product Description:
One million African Americans spend approximately $118 million annually on quilting. Some believe that recent studies of oral histories telling of the role quilting played in the Underground Railroad have inspired African Americans to take up their fabric and needles, but whatever the reason, quilters like Faith Ringgold, Clementine Hunter, Winnie McQueen, and many others are keeping the African American traditions of quilting alive. This is the first comprehensive guide to African American quilt history and contemporary practices. It offers over 1,700 bibliographic references, many of them annotated, covering exhibit catalogs, books, newspapers, magazines, dissertations, films, novels, poetry, speeches, works of art, advertisements, patterns, greeting cards, auction results, ephemeral items, and online resources on African American quilting. The book also includes primary research done by the author on the Internet usage of African American quilters, a listing of over 100 museums with African American made quilts in their permanent collections, a directory of African American quilting groups in 29 states, and a detailed timeline that covers 200 years of African American quilting and needle arts events.

This Old Quilt: A Heartwarming Celebration of Quilts And Quilting Memories [Paperback] Review

This Old Quilt: A Heartwarming Celebration of Quilts And Quilting Memories [Paperback]THIS OLD QUILT is a delightful patchwork of quilts, stories, art illustrations and vintage photographs. I was fascinated from the first moment and didn't want to put the book down.
There are five chapters in THIS OLD QUILT and they offer stories about learning to quilt; the quilting traditions of the Amish, Hopi Indians and African Americans; the warmth and love that comes from homemade quilts; the camaraderie of quilting bees; and many lovely stories and poems concerning the American tradition of quilting.
I was so happy to see many of the paintings of Sandi Wickersham that were used to illustrate this book. Sandi lives close by and much of her work is indicative of my area of Virginia.I own a few of her prints and it was fun to find them featured in THIS OLD QUILT.Several other artists including Diane Phalen's work was also used in the book. Their colorful and detailed quilting scenes add an extra layer of depth and pleasure to the book.
I poured over the vintage photographs that are mostly black and white or color enhanced. The ladies from the past are shown displaying their work or sitting among friends and quilting together. One 1936 Depression Era photograph is so striking! It's of a lady standing on the porch of a wooden cabin and displaying her gorgeous quilt that was made in the Dresden Plate pattern. The viewer senses that inside that unpainted cabin, life was probably pretty difficult, but this lady was able to make a work of art out of scraps, and a picture of her beautiful quilt endures for all of us to admire.
There are many lovely stories to read and enjoy, of both fact and fiction. My favorites are: HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT by Whitney Otto, THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB by Sandra Dallas and HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW by Jacqueline Tobin. THIS OLD QUILT is a treasure trove of quilting, memories and lovely pictures. I'm so happy that I treated myself to this endearing book.

Vintage Quilts: Identifying, Collecting, Dating, Preserving & Valuing [Hardcover] Review

Vintage Quilts: Identifying, Collecting, Dating, Preserving & Valuing [Hardcover]First the pros: lots of quality photos, covering a wide variety of patterns and eras.
Cons: basically, this book needs to be titled just "Vintage Quilts".The "Collecting, Dating, and Preserving" material is limited to just 4 pages at the beg. of the book. The rest of the volume is a "Value Guide", with a short description under each quilt photo, a notation as to "excellent condition", "fair condition" etc, and a dollar value estimate. The problem here is that nowhere in the book do they state their definition of what they consider to be good, excellent, etc. There's no excuse for this--both Aug and Newman are listed as judges in the book bios--defining their terms should have been covered in the opening pages.Without that, it makes their appraisals pretty much useless to the reader.(The photos are not large enough to show the quilt's condition.)
The other thing I thought was odd is that they don't compare individual quilts.I.e. show us two twin-size Bowtie quilts and explain [what they're worth.]In other words, show us how to appraise and value individual quilts.Which IS the whole point of the book, according to the title anyway. (Dang it, now I'm annoyed all over again!)
Needless to say, I'm returning my copy.

North Carolina Quilts [Paperback] Review

North Carolina Quilts [Paperback]I checked this book out of the Cashiers, North Carolina Library and spenta week browsing it. It has many fascinating color plates of NorthCarolina's historical quilts. There is an early embroidered farm scenequilt that is particularly spectacular and worthy of reproduction. Thereare also many black and white vintage photos of North Carolina's quiltersin period dress. I spent almost as much time looking at the vintageclothing photographs and the names of the women as I did the photos of thequilts. This is not a "how to quilt" book, but I think the photos and historical information in this volume would be beneficial to anyoneinterested in primary source research in vintage clothing and quilts ofsouthern origin.

Product Description:
This magnificent volume features color photographs of more than 100 quilts crafted in North Carolina between the early nineteenth century and 1976.Included are chintz applique quilts, intricately pieced and appliqued quilts, crazy quilts, and examples of ingenious thrift in quilting with found and salvaged materials.
The quilts were chosen from more than 10,000 that owners brought to be recorded by the North Carolina Quilt Project during a series of statewide Quilt Documentation Days in 1985-86.Because the quilts are privately owned, many have never been seen publicly. The text presents the lives and times of the quiltmakers, accompanied by many vintage photographs from family collections.Whether these women made quilts to pass the time, warm their families, beautify their lives, or serve as symbols of love and togetherness, they used their fabric with uncommon artistry and craftsmanship.

Treasury of American Quilts: Including Complete Patterns and Instructions for Making Your Own Quilts [Hardcover] Review

Treasury of American Quilts: Including Complete Patterns and Instructions for Making Your Own Quilts [Hardcover]the first half of this book is quilts--wonderful photos of quilts (and also a few embroidered bed rugs) on each page. the quilts range from the late 18th century to the mid-20th, applique, piecework, amish, hawaiian, original and commercial designs. the captions contain the usual information about dates and maker (if known) plus informative and frequently entertaining comments by the authors. the second half of the book has instructions for several of the quilts.

this book is copyrighted 1982, and, comparing this and other quilt books from about the same time to those published more recently, i am struck by the differences--the earlier books, such as this one, seem to offer a far broader range of styles and types of quilts (most remarkably individualistic), as well as more of them--it's as if the attitudes and standards in the quilt world have hardened and narrowed when it comes to which quilts deserve publication. while i have seen a few of the quilts in this book reproduced in other publications, many of the quilts are new to me. two of the most magnificent log cabin quilts i've seen are in this book, as well as a range of applique, from naive to baltimore album quality, that is unsurpassed. why more of these quilts have not seen further publication is a mystery.

aside from the captions, there is no text in the first half of the book. the space is given to the photos of the quilts.

the instructions date from before the time of the rotary cutter. much as i love my rotary cutter and rulers, i deplore the apparently complete dependence on them. these instructions offer templates for the piecing, and shapes that are not broken down into half square triangles or simplified out of character. templates are not frightening--they can be more efficient that ruler cutting. and y-seams are not difficult, they just need a bit more attention. patterns for a few applique quilts and a few patterns for quilting are also included.

this is a book that should be in every quilter's library. there is inspiration on every page. and, since the used prices start so low, there's no excuse not to buy it!

Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad [Paperback] Review

Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad [Paperback]I agree with most of the reviews of this book that the material is indeed fascinating. It just doesn't happen to be true.Sadly, the "quilt code" myth has been invented by a couple of vendors who sell quilts, and now also sell books, speaking engagements, memorabilia, etc.
This isn't the place for a "debunking", however. If you're interested in seriously evaluating the facts of the issue, and comparing this book's unfounded (indeed unique) claims against real scholarship on the Underground Railroad and the history of quilting, a good place to start is the research of Leigh Fellner, which appears in the March 2003 issue of Traditional Quiltworks magazine as well as the Hart Cottage Quilts website.

America's Printed Fabrics 1770-1890: 8 Reproduction Quilt Projects: Historic Notes and Photographs; Dating Your Quilts [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

America's Printed Fabrics 1770-1890: 8 Reproduction Quilt Projects: Historic Notes and Photographs; Dating Your Quilts [Paperback]Barbara describes her book as soft on fabric science and high on the how-to of making choices, choosing fabrics and quilt styles appropriate to a time period. The antique and reproduction swatches are large and clear. Barbara brings her considered opinions, research, and years of experience to each subject she discusses.

This book is probably a better choice than her classic "Clues in the Calico" (and it's updated some of the information too) for the individual just starting to learn about textile history because it is less dense in terms of text and details, but it is by no means shallow for those entrenched in textile history.

Throughout the book, there are what I call, Barbara's signature vignettes. These are those wonderful still life pictures of colorful combinations of antique fabrics, daguerreotypes, ephemera, sewing tools, bonnets and clothing and everyday household décor found in 19th century homes. In fact, she has included many photographs depicting dresses and textiles. Brief personal quotes from old diaries, letters, and other historical writings are scattered throughout the book, as are reproduction quilts made by outside contributors to the book. I really appreciate her putting dates, specific when possible, a narrow range when not, with the photos, quotes, quilts and fabrics.

More Biblical Quilt Blocks: New Inspirational Designs [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

More Biblical Quilt Blocks: New Inspirational Designs [Paperback]I have the first book this author wrote, and was extremely disappointed to find out that at least half the blocks in her new book are repeated from her first book. I feel that the title is misleading. Several of the authors of multiple volumes on the same subject are in my library. Examples would be Bethany Reynolds, Marsha McCloskey, Sharyn Craig, and Carol Doak. In each and every case, the blocks or techniques do not repeat the items that appeared in their earlier books. Therefore, it's logical to expect that a book entitled "More Biblical Blocks" would haveadditional blocks to the ones you already have.

Have you ever bought a CD of an artist you liked to find out that half or more of the songs were repeats from one you already owned? Well, this is the equivalent. Since the book isn't cheap, it's doubly disappointing.

Whereas I do agree that the directions are guite good, they are no better than those contained in many other books on the market by other authors, so there is nothing remarkable in that arena. If you have this author's "Biblical Blocks" book, I'd recommend skipping this one. If you're considering buying one of her books, buy only this one and skip the first, so it can have value to some. I, however, feel ripped off.
