Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Artful Applique II: Introducing Scraplique and 12 New Floral Designs [Paperback]The floral designs in Jane Townswick's second Artful Appliqué book are beautiful, natural, and detailed. Never fear, Jane takes you step-by-step through her way of mastering this realism. While advising beginners to consult one of her previous books or another reference book for the basics of appliqué, she introduces many fantastic techniques to throw into your appliqué bag of tricks.

In this volume Jane introduces Scrapliqué, a technique for creating mosaic-like fabric compositions for your motifs without having to stitch tiny pieces together. There's also information on unit appliqué, where you can stitch an entire flower before stitching it to the background. Jane explains several advantages to this strategy.

The book has sections on color blending, free-form stems and branches, and a unique way of stitching sharp points. There's a gorgeous gallery of quilts and 12 floral blocks with step-by-step instructions and photos. You'll find anemone, camellia, iris, lady's slipper, pansies, sweet peas, and more!

A rich resource for the appliqué enthusiast.

Product Description:
Charming bird designs were everywhere in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They graced linens, china, fabric, jewelry, greeting cards, feed sacks, and more, and inevitably found their way into embroidery kits and quilt patterns, too. From the front parlor, to the bedroom, to the kitchen, bird designs were indicative of the era. Susan McKelvey's much-loved collection of antique bird design items inspired the designs in 'Fancy Feathered Friends for Quilters.' Her aviary of exquisite birds, from the whimsical to the realistic, will enchant quilters of every skill level. Two dozen patterns feature popular bluebirds, purple martins, doves, and swallows, with blocks ranging in style from folk-art to Baltimore Album. Birds swoop in flight, flutter over branches, stand in classic profile, and snuggle together as lovebirds. Susan adds vines, leaves, flowers, branches, vases, and fruits to showcase each bird perfectly. To add to their versatility, patterns can be appliqued, embroidered, or painted. Mix and match elements to create your own unique designs. An extensive gallery of quilts beautifully showcases the designs, providing inspiration and options. Susan shares her expertise on how to use ink pens to create shading and outline details. A section on color shows how to use hue, value, and intensity to advantage. AUTHORBIO: Susan McKelvey caught the quilting bug in 1977 in a quilting class in Greensboro, North Carolina. Although quilting was not a part of her family heritage, it has become a part of her children's lives - they grew up under her design and dewing tables. In 1984, Susan wrote her first quilt book, "Color for Quilters", and many have followed. Through her company, Wallflower Designs, she has produced many patterns and tools for quilters. REVIEW: This wonderful book is crammed full of information, techniques and illustrations.

Treasury of American Quilts: Including Complete Patterns and Instructions for Making Your Own Quilts [Hardcover] Review

Treasury of American Quilts: Including Complete Patterns and Instructions for Making Your Own Quilts [Hardcover]the first half of this book is quilts--wonderful photos of quilts (and also a few embroidered bed rugs) on each page. the quilts range from the late 18th century to the mid-20th, applique, piecework, amish, hawaiian, original and commercial designs. the captions contain the usual information about dates and maker (if known) plus informative and frequently entertaining comments by the authors. the second half of the book has instructions for several of the quilts.

this book is copyrighted 1982, and, comparing this and other quilt books from about the same time to those published more recently, i am struck by the differences--the earlier books, such as this one, seem to offer a far broader range of styles and types of quilts (most remarkably individualistic), as well as more of them--it's as if the attitudes and standards in the quilt world have hardened and narrowed when it comes to which quilts deserve publication. while i have seen a few of the quilts in this book reproduced in other publications, many of the quilts are new to me. two of the most magnificent log cabin quilts i've seen are in this book, as well as a range of applique, from naive to baltimore album quality, that is unsurpassed. why more of these quilts have not seen further publication is a mystery.

aside from the captions, there is no text in the first half of the book. the space is given to the photos of the quilts.

the instructions date from before the time of the rotary cutter. much as i love my rotary cutter and rulers, i deplore the apparently complete dependence on them. these instructions offer templates for the piecing, and shapes that are not broken down into half square triangles or simplified out of character. templates are not frightening--they can be more efficient that ruler cutting. and y-seams are not difficult, they just need a bit more attention. patterns for a few applique quilts and a few patterns for quilting are also included.

this is a book that should be in every quilter's library. there is inspiration on every page. and, since the used prices start so low, there's no excuse not to buy it!

Beautiful Blooms: Quilts and Cushions to Applique (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Beautiful Blooms: Quilts and Cushions to Applique [Paperback]This is definitely the book for me.I DON'T have a green thumb but I do appliqué.I wish I had found this book last fall rather than now going into summer but the book will still be there come fall.Appliqué is something I love to do in front of the fireplace on a cool/cold night.

The first 25 pages are all about appliqué hot-to's and quilting basics along with choosing colors and fabrics. It is a chapter that very thoroughly covers all these points.

Then there are 10 different flowers to "grow" under your needle.Pillows and wall hangings make up the 10 patterns. While no quilts are shown, there is no reason you couldn't turn the patterns into quilts.

Each project begins with a paragraph about the flower and the finished size of the project.A materials and cutting list follow this.Simple construction directions are given with finishing suggestions. All templates are included. The more complex patterns come with color keys as well.

Grab some scrap fabric (this book will give you a way to use up those scraps you just can't part with), some template plastic, your ruler and cutting mat and this book. When you are done, you will have a "green thumb" to show for it!
