Product Description:
Charming bird designs were everywhere in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They graced linens, china, fabric, jewelry, greeting cards, feed sacks, and more, and inevitably found their way into embroidery kits and quilt patterns, too. From the front parlor, to the bedroom, to the kitchen, bird designs were indicative of the era. Susan McKelvey's much-loved collection of antique bird design items inspired the designs in 'Fancy Feathered Friends for Quilters.' Her aviary of exquisite birds, from the whimsical to the realistic, will enchant quilters of every skill level. Two dozen patterns feature popular bluebirds, purple martins, doves, and swallows, with blocks ranging in style from folk-art to Baltimore Album. Birds swoop in flight, flutter over branches, stand in classic profile, and snuggle together as lovebirds. Susan adds vines, leaves, flowers, branches, vases, and fruits to showcase each bird perfectly. To add to their versatility, patterns can be appliqued, embroidered, or painted. Mix and match elements to create your own unique designs. An extensive gallery of quilts beautifully showcases the designs, providing inspiration and options. Susan shares her expertise on how to use ink pens to create shading and outline details. A section on color shows how to use hue, value, and intensity to advantage. AUTHORBIO: Susan McKelvey caught the quilting bug in 1977 in a quilting class in Greensboro, North Carolina. Although quilting was not a part of her family heritage, it has become a part of her children's lives - they grew up under her design and dewing tables. In 1984, Susan wrote her first quilt book, "Color for Quilters", and many have followed. Through her company, Wallflower Designs, she has produced many patterns and tools for quilters. REVIEW: This wonderful book is crammed full of information, techniques and illustrations.

Applique Masterpiece: Little Brown Bird Patterns [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Applique Masterpiece: Little Brown Bird Patterns [Paperback]I found this book to be an absolute delight. The illustrations are exquisite and Margaret Doherty's conversational style is easy to read and understand. I learned a lot of new techniques, for instance, using parts of a large scale fabric to piece a very small bird. In one instance, she used a cobblestone fabric for the birds breast.
I am interested in developing small projects and feel that any one of the 40 squares would make a masterpiece item.
A quote from the author's preface: "I work as a pediatrician and each night after dinner, I do a crossword puzzle and sew for about six hours." sums up the author'sapproach to this form of fabric work. The challenge in looking at fabrics, colors, and techniques in a new way is worth the price of the book.

The Changing Seasons: Quilt Patterns from Japan (Dutton Studio Book) [Paperback] Review

The Changing Seasons: Quilt Patterns from Japan [Paperback]Bountiful inspirations from Japanese themed & stylized quilts.

Detailing only 5 projects, many more quilts are photographed, along with original images of ceramics textiles & artworks (nothing we haven't seen before, but included with a commentary on the design & short histories).

The huge range and variety of quilts displayed is a potential source of endless inspiration for the keen quilter, and even a fair enough coffee table book.

`Quilt', used here, covers more than patchwork. Many of the pieces are lavishly appliquéd and embroidered, and included in the pattern guides are appliqué instructions as well as some sashiko stitching patterns.

The text is somewhat dry and pompous, but ignoring that, there really is a good selection of widely varying quilts displayed and ought to excite much interest. It certainly is good to see a large number of quilts on one theme from different artists, there is no opportunity for the designs to be stagnant and self replicating. ..

I would also recommend Kumiko Sudo's excellent patchwork & quilting books to anyone interested in the Oriental styles.

Baltimore Beauties and Beyond: Studies in Classic Album Quilt Applique, Vol. 1 [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

Baltimore Beauties and Beyond: Studies in Classic Album Quilt Applique, Vol. 1 [Paperback]My love of Hawaiian quilting attracted me to this book and Baltimore album quilting. The instructions and patterns are clear and the designs are awesome. I particularly like the simpler patterns like double hearts, fleur-de-lis, and you are perfect (a pineapple design). I think it may be possible to machine applique as well as hand applique these designs. Of course, there are many intricate designs too--many that require rouched flowers and curved stems and intricate applique that I can only imagine being quilted by the most devoted. The directions on how to cut out thepatterns with paper folding are clear and helpful. You could spend a lifetime making the quilts in this book--and what a beautiful life you'd have!

Product Description:
When Marsha D. Radtke discovered a tattered quilt in her rural Maryland parsonage attic, she found local history as well as an old textile. The red and green Baltimore Album quilt not only had an inked date of 1850, it also had inked signatures of women with well-known area family names. It was the superb workmanship that inspired Marsha to re-create the quilt s 24 hand applique patterns (one of them repeated in different fabrics) and share this historic treasure with others. These patterns sewn with expert skill before the Civil War have been redrafted for today's quilter with precision, clarity, and easy-to-follow instructions. In addition to being a Baltimore Album pattern teaching guide and resource, the book includesMartha s quilt-as-you-go technique and fail-safe binding method. Marsha began quilting in the 1990s and has won numerous ribbons and awards. Applique is her first love, which she enjoys teaching to others. She lives in Crossville, Tennessee, with her husband, Jim.
