Paper piecing is not my favorite type of quilting mostly due to my dislike of the fabric waste.However, this book has excellent patterns / projects for birds that I think those who don't like to applique or want a faster way to achieve these designs will truly enjoy.Directions are easily understood and implemented.TIPS:(1) If you are new to paper piecing, try using BATIK fabrics that have no right or wrong side.This helps you to avoid using "Mr. Ripper" when you place your fabric the wrong way against the paper piecing pattern. (2) Use a two-ply thread like Aurifil Mako 50 wt (Aurifil 50 wt Taupe is my color preference for all piecing) and a thinner needle 75/11 or 70/10 sharps.These help eliminate bulk especially with the very small pieces.

Sizzle 'n Pop: Six Strip-Pieced Quilt Patterns Using Bali Pops [Paperback] Review

I have been construction the quilt on the cover, Clerestory Window.I have run into several problems.First, I have had to buy a LOT more fabric than she lists.Second, there are problems with the lists of cuts of fabric to use for each section: her color names ("medium brown" versus "brown") are not consistent.And with there being 3-4 shades of each color being used, this is VERY important.Her instructions on how to piece the quilt together are very lacking.I've made it through sections A and C easily enough by working with the picture of the actual quilt, but I do not look forward to Section D (the upper right side of the quilt).Unless you are an expert quilter who needs little instruction, I do not recommend this book.

I absolutely love this book. The patterns are beautiful and very unique. I am a beginner and I never thought that I could make quilts like these as my first projects! Jodie describes everything you need to know to make a quilt, in her delightful easygoing way, with words and drawings. This makes it very easy to follow the instructions. There are over 36 patterns of flowers, butterflies, birds and more.The patterns are very beautiful and the colors are fantastic. I love the pictures ofthe patterns and the quilts they really motivated me!I am sure that both beginners and advanced Quilters will enjoy this book as much as I have and have fun making the quilts. Ruth B. McDowell's Piecing Workshop: Step-by-Step Visual Guide Indispensable Reference for Quilters Bonus Projects [Paperback] Review

Unfortunately I missed out on a live workshop with Ruth and sent my best buddy in my place instead. She LOVED it!!! Even though I tried to practice her techniques in her other books, I never quite 'got it'. I guess I'm just more of a 'show me what you do' kind of person.
This book changed all that and I made her sugar maple quilt quickly and easily and I'm thrilled with the outcome! Also, with her guidance on inset seams, I finished a difficult navajo quilt that had had me stumped because I couldn't get the seams set in just right. But with her latest book, it was like having this amazingly talented and wonderful lady right there with me! She is such inspiration, her quilts are outstanding and absolutely fabulous! Liberated Quiltmaking II [Illustrated] [Paperback] Review

My copy arrived today and I love it. I have been a fan of Gwen Marston for a long time. She is a master quilter with a sense of humor. Whether you are a new or experienced quilter, you will find something here to love. Gwen is an excellent teacher who shows you useful techniques for piecing "by eye," and she answers many practical questions that will enable you to confidently design and make your own unique quilts. If you want to move beyond following patterns, this is the book for you! I have been a quilter since 1966 and I'm loving all the inspiration in this book. It makes me want to start a new quilt right now.

Here are some examples of her advice: "You don't need to choose all the colors before you start sewing." "It's harder to make a mistake than you think." "It's easier to err by playing it too safe: over-coordination can lead to the "color by number" look and a monotonous quilt." Her approach will loosen you up to have more fun making quilts.

The photos are beautiful. There are string quilts, basket quilts, star quilts, housetop/log cabin quilts, medallion quilts, some applique, traditional but liberated flying geese, and more. I particularly like the liberated chair quilt on page 122. This book is fun to read and she makes me laugh. It's the next best thing to attending one of Gwen's retreats. You can dive in at any point in the book.

This book will energize your quilting. I highly recommend it; you won't be disappointed.

No color, no patterns, no quilt specifics.Just general Amish-info.Mostly talks about present-day quilting for sales to tourists, polester batts and poly-cotton fabrics, as though more traditional quilts are just history.
If you're a quilter, spend a few dollars more to own intriguing and satisfying books --e.g, *****Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: 90 color photos which clearly show every great color combination and quilting pattern + dimension, date, fabric info, etc. Any quilt pictured can go straight to big-bed size w/ application of a little arithmetic.Also gives us a new appreciation of cotton chambrays & simple warm baby quilts.

Journey of an Art Quilter: Creative Strategies and Techniques [Paperback] Review

Was literally a personal journey, very inspirational and passionate, sharing her own inspirations and techniques, beautiful color photos and details, absolutely amazing from the heart and soul, especially since I am not a quilter myself but a painter always looking for creative design, color, pattern, composition, etc. in other medias. Thought I would pass on to my sister who is a quilter but a keeper for my art library and ordered another copy for my sister who loved as said dreams of taking her seminars! Passionate Patchwork: Over 20 Original Quilt Designs [Hardcover] Review

If you're a color junkie, if the sight of a newly-opened six-row box of Crayolas leaves you breathless, and if you walk through fabric stores just for the color hit, then "Passionate Patchwork" is a book for you. Without a doubt, the projects in this book are made up in the most sophisticated and exciting palettes ever seen in a quilt book. And the quilts--all of which look eminently doable, even by a rank beginner--are photographed in such lush, visually sumptuous settings that you can happily spend hours simply "reading" the photos. The other thing I like about this book is that these quilts are quite possible. We are not talking about quilts with 75 differently shaped chunks of fabric that must be pieced into each block. These quilts are not exercises in perfectionistic anality, but are made of simple geometric shapes that let the fabric do the talking, and leave the quiltmaker with sanity intact. Admittedly, one of the authors does have a signature line of fabric, and many quilts photographed make extensive use of that line. But any quilter's fabric stash already contains many comparable textiles that could be put to more sophisticated use, in exciting new combinations shown in this book. Several of the quilts in this book make use of "orphan" blocks that are showcased by being re-set with imaginative new uses of color and fabric pattern. This seems a respectful use and transformation of handwork from earlier times: the newly-made quilts look fresh and exciting, even when they used segements of old cliche patterns such as wedding ring and grandmother's flower garden. But you don't have to be a quilter to love this book. Although it has simple, easy-to-follow diagrams and directions for each product, the book could just as well appeal to knitters, painters, weavers, decorators or anyone else with a love of and appetite for color used creatively. I have already picked out my next few quilting projects inspired by this book. (The "rice bowl" and "hatbox" quilts are particularly compelling). That I would use quilts in this book as a model is certainly something I could not say for nine out of every ten other quilting books published.
