Color Harmony for Quilts: A Quiltmaker's Guide to Exploring Color [Paperback] Review

Color Harmony for Quilts: A Quiltmaker's Guide to Exploring Color [Paperback]Read the book through once, then go back and really read it!
Not only do the authors show us their own quilts, they have showcased some of the best known, and unknown quilters intenationally. Every quilt is broken down as to which colors, values and proportions were chosen by the quilter...even the amount of black used in each quilt is represented on a scale. If youdon't like the colors the quilter chose, they give you at least 3-4 other colorways and designs to choose from for every quilt shown! I only wish I had this information when I began quilting. Now I know I can break out of the box and create quilts that are really mine.
Thank you Weeks and Bill.

Product Description:
The key element in putting a quilt design together is colour, yet many people do not have a good grasp of colour theory - from what colours best complement others to what type of mood each colour evokes. Quilting expert Barbara Albright leads readers through a clear explanation of colour theory and how it relates to quilting, complete with tips on how to combine the right colours to get the look you want. From there, she presents 15 colour adjectives chosen to represent different moods - whether dynamic, romantic or natural - and illustrates each with two actual quilt patterns that best illustrate each colour concept, along with 8 colour variations for each quilt. Covering the historical relevance as well as the patterns and techniques used for each quilt, Wright illustrates how variations in colour, size and placement affect the mood of the finished piece.

Learn to Quilt with Leather [Paperback] Review

Learn to Quilt with Leather [Paperback]I had modest expectations for this book but it did not even meet these low standards. If you're an experienced quilter, the book offers only basic and uninteresting layout and patterns. If you're a beginning quilter, you'll be confounded by the author's abbreviated instructions. If you're looking for insights into working with lightweight leather, as I was, about all the help you get is "use a leather needle." Even the suppliers list is awful-the only supplier of leather that the author lists is Tandy. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this one.

Traditional patchwork takes on a new look and feel in suede, and applique is easy because edges do not need to be turned under. Sharp points and curves, as well as reverse applique and foundation piecing are easy to accomplish.

Product Description:

Easy Quilts from Your Closet is a guide to making the most of the fabrics you love. Quilting is a great way to recycle T-shirts, blue jeans, neckties, pj's , and even prom dresses-to give old favorites a quick and cozy makeover.

These fifteen projects teach three of the most basic quilting techniques: patchwork piecing, foundation piecing, and applique. Readers learn how to "deconstruct" their favorite garments and then reconstruct the pieces to form the small individual blocks that are stitched together to form a quilt.

Block by block, they'll learn how to make quilt tops and "sandwiches" and then decoratively stitch their surfaces by machine-with straight lines or freeform shapes. They'll also learn how to assemble blocks to make three full sampler quilts, adding sashing, binding, and designer labels.

Colorful, Casual, and Comfy Quilts: Over 20 Quilts and Projects to Warm Your Home [Paperback] Review

Colorful, Casual, and Comfy Quilts: Over 20 Quilts and Projects to Warm Your Home [Paperback]Colorful, Casual, and Comfy Quilts: Over 20 Quilts and Projects to Warm Your HomeTake care with the instructions on page 92 for completing the Stargazing with Roberta Minature. For the Sawtooth Star Blocks you do, indeed, need 144 B triangles, but they need to be larger than what you end up with if you cut a 1-7/8x 1-7/8 square diagonally in both directions. You need to start out with 72 1-7/8x1-7/8 squares and cut them diagonally once, not both directions. This was my first quilt, so I didn't realize the error until AFTER I cut and wasted my fabric.

The Art of the Handmade Quilt [Hardcover] Review

The Art of the Handmade Quilt [Hardcover]I ordered this book on a whim and really like it (though I haven't made any of the projects yet). It's a blend of historical quilts that the author has figured out patterns for and new quilts. There's also a large range of techniques used, so there's something here for everyone. The book is very inspiring and I would recommend it to anyone interested in hand-stitching or quilting.

Sewing machines are speedier-but, increasingly, quilters are discovering that working by hand provides even more pleasure and superior results. And world-renowned quilt maker, teacher, author, and show judge Nancy Brenan Daniel has created an inspiring guide just for them, with ideas for 18 varied and beautiful hand-sewn quilts. Her detailed instructions cover it all, from making the blocks and stitching them together to adding borders and binding. Many of the designs come straight from Nancy's own antique collection, and they're pieced, appliqued, and even stenciled. Several traditional and much loved patterns-including the Courthouse Log Cabin, Shoo-fly, Prickly Pear, and Windblown Daisy-are accompanied by a contemporary applique quilt and a small hand-embroidered wall hanging.

The Modern Quilt Workshop: Patterns, Techniques, and Designs from the Funquilts Studio [Paperback] Review

The Modern Quilt Workshop: Patterns, Techniques, and Designs from the Funquilts Studio [Paperback]If you think quilting is for fuddy-duddys, get hold of this book and change your mind! This book has by far the best layout and design of any quilt book I've seen (and I own hundreds).

The quilts look complicated but they really aren't - and if you're nervous, start with one of the "easy" ones at the front of the book. Each quilt pattern is given in multiple sizes (Wall through to Queen) with a beautiful photo and clear illustrations and text, as well as clear cutting intructions and a table which makes it easy to see how many pieces to cut.

The authors encourage you to experiment, and show how each quilt could look in other colour choices. There's evenhints on catching any potential design disasters before they happen.

This is my new favourite quilt book and I would recommend it for ANYONE - even advanced quilters will find new and challenging design opportunities sparked by this book.

Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt and Patchwork Projects [Paperback] Review

Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt and Patchwork Projects [Paperback]I am a long-time quilter who loves modern patterns and innovative design; I was so excited to see this book. When it arrived I knew after flipping through it once that I would be returning it--and I never return quilt books. Be aware that hardly any of the patterns are for quilts--most are for household objects. And what's frustrating about those patterns for things like slippers is that they don't seem as though they would produce results that are going to hold up well.Oh well.I'd recommend that non-beginners skip this and get two great Kerr/Ringle books: Color Harmony for Quilters and The Modern Quilt Workshop instead.
