The Art of Manipulating Fabric [Paperback] Review

The Art of Manipulating Fabric [Paperback]In the author's words, "this is a book of ideas about sewing cloth" but what it really is, is an awesome collection of information from a thousand different sources on the techniques sewers have used sincefabric was invented, to change the surface of an initially flat textile.Wolff brings little techniques of fabric manipulation from the backgroundto the spotlight by isolating each technique, cataloging its uniquefeatures, separating the technique from end product associations, andexploring the sculptural possibilities without regard to where applicationwill be. For any home or professional sewers who currently (orhypothetically) maintain folders of "pleating ideas,""interesting darts," or "photos of ruffles" get thisbook, and fast. Save yourself the chore of assimilating all the diagramsand photos and captions because Wolff has done it so thoroughly you willfind yourself engrossed just reading about the humble little fabric tuck.Granted, no technique by itself makes wearable art or couture clothing, butthese are the manipulations that make up the experimental stuff on therunways and in the exclusive boutiques. Learn what they do to a plaintextile and you're primed to exploit fabric, for whatever purposes yourlittle heart desires. Wolff's chapters cover: controlled crushing(gathering, shirring), supplementary fullness (making ruffles, makingflounces, making godets), systematic folding (pleating, smocking, tucking),filled reliefs (cording, quilting, stuffing), structured surfaces (darts),and mixed manipulations (combinations). If you're a collector of books ondyeing or embroidery or exquisite cut, you really owe it to yourself to addthis viewpoint to your library. Until the magical moment when I picked upthis volume at a fabric trade show, I had no idea someone had catalogued sofanatically the world of playing with fabric. Thank goodness she has, or Imight have attempted it. And as if a jam-packed reference guide isn't causeenough for celebration among fabric junkies, she's included a modestglossary, for clarity, a very helpful bibliography of books and articles, and a really thorough index that makes textbooks look carelessly written. This isn't just for garment-makers either; I can easily see applications inquilting, weaving, home decorating, wearable art, and costuming. Sewingmachine recommended for most of these techniques but they could all be doneby hand-sewers. I think it would most benefit the home sewer looking tospice up their wardrobe with more sophistication and interest in the fabrichandling, but could also be very useful to the professional, especially inthe design fields. After each time I pick up this book I find ideasbubbling to the surface on how to make my next fabric creation really pop. It's inspired several experiments and I see no end in sight.

Nature's Beauty in Redwork [Paperback] Review

Nature's Beauty in Redwork [Paperback]I am a Redwork lover (or bluework or greenwork or any other same color work). It is easy in that you don't have to worry about whether the next line to embroider is a different color and it let's me work and watch TV at the same time without worrying about color changes. It is also the first craft I learned as a small child when I stitched my embroidery work to my skirt! And even with this mistake, I still enjoy embroidery today.

Debra Feece found an antique quilt at an outdoor flea market and grabbed it up.She shares 25 of the 72 patterns in this book.Maybe we can talk her into sharing the rest in another couple of books so that way we too can recreate this wonderful antique quilt.

The patterns range from flowers, of course as what antique quilt is complete without a flower or two, to birds and animals.Debra provides a page of general embroidery instructions and there is even a photo of a throw pillow as a suggestion of other ways to use the patterns.

If you are a craft teacher or a lover of embroidery, take a look at NATURE'S BEAUTH IN REDWORK.You won't be disappointed.

The Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook: Patterns, Projects and Inspirations [Paperback] Review

The Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook: Patterns, Projects and Inspirations [Paperback]Please pardon the review title. This book deserves it. It's interesting, clearly organized, and easy to use. You can read through it for enjoyment or ideas, or you can use the clear headings, the big color photos, or (if you're more of a words person than an images person) the very navigable table of contents or index, to find exactly the information you want in no time flat.

That's another nice thing about this book. It's jam-packed with information. It has a good history of sashiko. It has some historical info on different sashiko patterns. It has photos of sashiko through the ages. It has good explanations. It has loads of stitch patterns, all with full-color examples, reasonably idiot-proof directions, and suggestions for use so that you can design your own projects. It has a good variety of sample projects, plus a gorgeous gallery of what stitching experts have done with sashiko. It even has suggestions for what to use to get the right look if traditional Japanese tools and materials aren't available where you live.

If you want to learn sashiko and can only afford one book, this is the book to get. I'm very impressed with it.

Product Description:
Sashiko, the traditional Japanese technique of needlework quilting, uses simple running stitch to create beautifully decorative patterns ideal for patchwork, quilting and embroidery. Sashiko (pronounced shash-ko) means 'stab stitch' and refers to the small running stitch that is worked to build up distinctive decorative patterns, of which there are hundreds. The book begins by exploring the origins of the technique to strengthen clothes and to make them warmer. Getting Started describes everything you need to begin stitching, including selecting suitable fabrics and threads, marking out patterns on the fabric, as well as the stitching technique itself. Ten project chapters show how easy it is to use sashiko patterns to make beautiful items for the home. The sashiko patterns are described in step-by-step detail in the pattern library, showing you exactly how to achieve each individual pattern with ease. Finally a gallery of work by contemporary Japanese textile artists provides extra inspiration.

Quilts from Paradise (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Quilts from Paradise [Paperback]Is appliqué your thing? If so, Quilts from Paradise should keep you happy for a dozen projects.

The dozen quilts and two bags are all done in beautiful colors but VERY appliqué intense. These definitely will not work for our charity quilting group. There are a few that the appliqué could be left off of to make a simple quilt but I wouldn't buy the book if that is the type of patterns you really want.

All the templates are included at full size which is very nice.I always hate to have to run out to the copy shop to enlarge a pattern before I can begin. The instructions need to be read very carefully in order to follow what is being said and keeping track of which appliqué piece goes with which other ones might be difficult unless you put each "unit" together in a plastic baggie.

The materials list is very straight forward but I did find the cutting and assembly instructions for a few difficult to follow. There are just way too many pieces to keep straight. There is a color photo of the finished quilt and the finished block and quilt sizes are provided.

Unless appliqué is something you enjoy doing and are at easy with keeping lots of pieces straight, I wouldn't recommend this book.It is definitely not one for a beginning quilter.
