Stack the Deck!: Crazy Quilts in 4 Easy Steps [Paperback] Review

Stack the Deck: Crazy Quilts in 4 Easy Steps [Paperback]Ms Alexander has created a very innnovative way to tackle a crazy quilt:via piecework. There is no real development of the embellishment stage of her piecework; other books like Michlers or Montano Baker can tackle that. This book is totally for the patchwork, piecework, sewer in you.
It's an interesting approach of cutting material, patches, into various shapes and then 'shuffling them' into a whole.I was quite impressed by the easy variety of this simple method.
Some of the early quilts shown are boring and not really indicative of the method but as the book progresses it gets steam and starts showing how the use of colour in this art form can really breathe life into a quilt.
I think this book is 1) an easy introduction into crazy quilts,
especially for those who have not been smitten by the other methds and 2) a different way for those of us who love crazies but want more colour variety and play in their quilts, many have a hard time with this aspect of the crazy free-form quilting method, getting the colours to interplay correctly, and 3) for those who like the mechanical piecework aspect of patchworks (same blocks sewn together) in a rhythmic pattern. All three groups will not be disappointed.Just remember for the final stage, embellishment, go elsewhere.
So on allot of levels this book satisfies.Happy quilting.

Time to Quilt: Fun Quilts and Retreat Ideas for 1 or 101 (That Patchwork Place) [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

Time to Quilt: Fun Quilts and Retreat Ideas for 1 or 101 [Paperback]Time to Quilt not only shows you how to plan a quilt retreat with your quilting friends, but offers resourceful solutions to make more time to quilt at home without feeling guilty. I followed the books advise and scheduled time for my quilting by putting it on the calendar, planning ahead to have the kids and husband busy with their own activities out of the house. Then I indulged on my pleasurable project in good conscience.
Time to Quilt has a wide variety of quilt designs and projects from large to small, with suggestions on what to do with leftover blocks too! My favorite is the playful ice skate table runner as the quilting makes a "figure 8". Can't wait to make the footwarmer soon.
Everything about the book is beautiful: the photography, graphics, friendly writing style. The book has a positive, open feeling to it. Really clear and easy to follow instructions with good illustrations. Terrific tips on basic skills as well as how to put a group quilt together when blocks are not quite the same size.
The book has recipes peppered throughtout. My favorites are the mix-in cookies and Scrapsoup. For the Pollo con Salsa recipe, you don't even need to defrost the chicken. It was so easy, it gave me more time to quilt!
