More Fat Quarter Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

More Fat Quarter Quilts [Paperback]I loved M'Liss Hawley's first fat quarter book and looked forward to this one.All the quilts in it look wonderful, particularly the Bargello which I'm dying to try.
However, there is a big error in at least one of the sets of instructions!"Triple Rail on Point" is the first quilt I'm trying from this book, and I've discovered that the diagram illustrating the number of blocks in each row is wrong. The diagram shows a single block in each corner of the main body of the quilt. This seemed a bit funny as all the example quilt photos showed 2 blocks in two of the opposite corners, 1 in the other two.As I began sewing my rows together as per the diagram, I finally realized there _is_ supposed to be 1 more block added onto the end of 6 or 7 of the rows.I have to go back and somehow fit them in to my already-sewn-together rows.If I don't, there will be either holes in my quilt top when I trim the setting triangles, or my block points will be cut off.NOT GOOD!
I hope this is the only error - I still want to make the other quilts but I'm going to be extremely cautious in comparing the diagrams to the photos from now on.I've pulled a lot of my hair out over this one!

Quilts On The Double: Dozens of Easy Strip-Pieced Designs [Paperback] Review

Quilts On The Double: Dozens of Easy Strip-Pieced Designs [Paperback]By the time I had gotten to the second page of this book, I was HOOKED.I thought "Finally, someone who makes quilt blocks easy AND they can be put together in so many ways".This will be a book that our guild can use over and over as we make our charity quilts for Habitat for Humanity and Love and Hugs.

The book shows 15 quilts but I'm going to bet that those 15 are just the tip of the iceberg with what can be done with these easy to make blocks.Showing how the basic block is made takes only one page to explain while in depth directions follow.Six pages show various ways to put the blocks together to make different designs. The authors include a section on choosing fabrics and explaining about fat quarters and their equivalents. They show fabric values and how one color can be many shades.

While you can make many, many designs with the basic block, the authors add another color triangle to the basic block which really gives you lots of possible designs.By cutting the triangles for each quilt, you will have pieces left over to make another one, thus the name, QUILTS ON THE DOUBLE.There are directions for making only one but if you are spending the time to cut for one, why not have pieces cut for a second without having to spend extra time to do it?

Each quilt is shown finished and its size is given. The materials list shows what is needed for making one or both.Cutting and finishing instructions are clear and graphics show what the directions are talking about.Finishing is left up to the maker.Quilting basics are covered for a new quilter or to refresh your memory if needed. And the final page gives a bit about each author.

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Bits and Pieces: 18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps [Paperback]What to do with the scraps from other quilts! That is always a question in a quilter's mind.BITS AND PIECES helps solve that problem. While the book is about making small quilts in the size range of 20" square, there is no reason you couldn't make several of the small quilts, put them together and make a bed sized one!A bit of sashing between each "quilt" and you have a large quilt instead. For example, in One Patch Garden, there are lots of colorful square with a border. So just make more squares from your leftovers and you have the bed quilt

Each pattern, of which there are 17, begins with a bit of information about the quilt. Then the size of the finished project is listed and a materials list is given. Cutting instructions come next followed by how to assemble the top and finishing directions. There are plenty of graphics to help you visualize what the instructions are telling you to do.And lots of tips are found in special boxes through out.

Your quilts will most likely not match the ones in the photos as your scraps are sure to be different than the author's.The quilts are divided into four types, those using squares and rectangles, those using triangles, those using diamonds and those using curves and circles with easy appliqué.This makes the book one in which everyone will find a project to their liking.

Simple Strategies for Scrap Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

Simple Strategies for Scrap Quilts [Paperback]I've been a quilter for a long time, and I have the fabric collection to prove it. This book offers hope that I will be able to transform my stash into beautiful quilts, not random ones that don't really work. I liked the fact that there is just enough color theory to get me started, but not so much that I feel I need an art degree to understand it.The quilts shown are true examples and are tied to the lessons. Incidental tips, such as basting with binder clips and sewing a striped border, are worth the price of the book. My favorite line - "Everyone knows that stash quilts are free."

A Baker's Dozen: 13 Quilts from Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, and More (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

A Baker's Dozen: 13 Quilts from Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, and More [Paperback]Another well-written book from That Patchwork Place!I admit to succumbing to the temptation to purchase a couple of those Jelly rolls -- but haven't quite figured out what I wanted to do with them.Until Now!!! I now have a whole selection of wonderful patterns! I love that the authors have also included a "stash option" that provides cutting requirements from yardage -- that was a really thoughtful feature that allows the patterns to be used in ways other than if you have those pretty little "rolls" or "cakes". The directions are well written with well-thought out graphics to support the text. The book is cohesive and clear -- which is important when there are so many quilt designers represented!!!I also like the fact that there's a small bio and photos of each of the designers!!It's fun to pick out a favorite pattern (Scrappy Hunter's Star in my case) and then go look up the bio and see what Regina Girard really looks like!It makes it so much more personal.Thank you for a fabulous new book!!
