Everyday Folk Art: Hooked Rugs And Quilts To Make [Paperback] Review

Everyday Folk Art: Hooked Rugs And Quilts To Make [Paperback]I LOVE books that have a dual purpose and EVERYDAY FOLK ART does just that!If you are a quilter, buy this book and make the quilt, then hook a rug to go along with it.And, remember the reverse, if you are a hooker, buy this book, hook a rug and then make the quilt to go along with it.Either way, you will learn a new technique.AND, if you already do both crafts, the book will keep you busy for many days and nights to come.

There are eight patterns that range from stars to animals to patriotic themes to game themes to a Log Cabin and finally an Irish Chain. The quilts are made by piecing alone or with piecing and appliqué.There is even a easy technique for making a Log Cabin (not the pattern but the actual Log Cabin) that uses "ragged" fabric. The rugs are hooked to match the themes of the quilts. You could even use up all those scraps you hate to throw away as a quilter and make a "scatter" rug --- one that is just a maze of colors.

Each quilt pattern has a materials list, cutting instructions and then instructions for putting the quilt together, along with graphics to help explain what you are suppose to do.If special templates are needed, they are also included.A full color photo of the finish quilt is provided. For each rug, the same things are provided as for the quilts.

There are tips in special colored boxes throughout the book and each author gives a brief overview about the pattern. The chapters at the end of the book include ten pages of basic quilting how-to's, 16 pages of basic rug hooking how-to's and a page of resources in case you cannot locate any of the supplies you might need to create these wonderful folk art pieces. This sister duo sure has a knack for fabric arts.

The Quilts of Gee's Bend: Masterpieces from a Lost Place [Hardcover] Review

The Quilts of Gee's Bend: Masterpieces from a Lost Place [Hardcover]Congratulations!!!! A few of these women are my aunts and they have been working so hard at this all their lives, I am so happy that they are finally getting the recognition that they deserve. They used to make so many quilts when we were younger and just give them away to family members as Xmas gifts, now they are being hung in museums around the US and I have proudly displayed my childhood quilts so everyone will know just how proud I am of them!!! Now I know the Pettway woman will always be remembered for the proud and strong women they are.

Christmas Quilts From Hopscotch: Warm and Cozy, Merry and Bright [Paperback] Review

Christmas Quilts From Hopscotch: Warm and Cozy, Merry and Bright [Paperback]I will be telling my age with this review but if you remember "flip-books", then you will know how this book is printed. For those of you who are not old enough, a flip-book is one where you "flip" the book in order to read all of it.Half of the book is printed reading one direction and the other half you need to "flip" the book over to read the rest.

One half of this book is MERRY AND BRIGHT and the other is WARM AND COZY.Each has the same patterns but each side is done in different color schemes.Like the title says, one is done in bright colors and the other is done in earthy tones.

Beginning with the WARM AND COZY side, you find the information on appliquéing the pieces for each project.A discussion between using wool or cotton is given farther back in the book. The patterns are of Christmas stockings, Cloth balls, a tree skirt, two wall hangings, an Advent calendar and a lap quilt. Each side has complete instructions for doing the projects --- one in bright colors and one in earthy tones.

Color photos of the project are shown at the start of each set of instructions.Finished size and skill levels are given next with a materials list following that.Cutting and piecing instructions are next with very good graphics to help you follow along. The wording of the instructions is well written so you don't have any trouble figuring out what the next step is.Assembling and binding are the final steps in the list of directions.

If you have never understood what the choice of fabric can do to make the same project look different, this is a book that will help you grasp that concept.Besides, how many times have you made a project for one friend and wished to make the same for another friend whose home decorations are the exact opposite of what you just made but weren't sure what color choices would be best?I know I have and this book shows you both sides of the color spectrum. It is a great "twofer" for one price.
