French Braid Obsession: New Ideas for the Imaginative Quilter [Paperback] Review

French Braid Obsession: New Ideas for the Imaginative Quilter [Paperback]I have the first book by this author and have made two quilts from it. They are fun and impressive in their construction. I was hoping for many more new ideas with her second book and was disappointed to find that the first 37 pages repeat methods from the first book. So if you don't own the first book, you really can get away with buying just this second book. And if you already own the first book, just be forewarned that the second one repeats a LOT of the first one!

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc! [Paperback] Review

Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc [Paperback]This book has hundreds of design possibilities, all shown in grayscale diagrams. There are photographs of some of them made up, but for most of them you'll have to do your own color choices and placement. These blocks could be made up into bed-sized quilts, starting with large squares as building blocks, or into blocks to go into a quilt, or as a single smaller block as a wallhanging or other small quilt project. This is not for someone who needs handholding and precise step-by-step directions. But if you're confident in your own taste and able to make decisions for yourself as you go along, and can look at a block diagram and see how it should be sewn together, this offers you lots of options. All the blocks are made from simple units -- squares, four patches, "rail fence" units (two rectangles), and half-square triangles. The author gives you lots of possible ways to combine those units into quilt blocks of any size you choose, determined only by the size of square you start with. This is a book I'll return to again and again.

Product Description:

The latest trend in fabric is precut squares or rectangles. Layer Cakes from Moda are 10 inch squares. Sweet 16s from Maywood Studios are 9 inch x 11 inch rectangles. Marcus Brothers cuts their Spoonfuls into 8-1/2 inch squares. This book contains ideas for all these large squares. Or you can cut you own large squares. One Fat Quarter can be cut into four 8-1/2 inch squares. Making the designs even more flexible, these patterns will work for ANY SIZE SQUARE! The popular 5 inch charm packs will make a fun baby quilt size or table topper. Or maybe you have cut leftover fabrics from past projects into 4 inch or 6 inch squares (or any other uniform size). These patterns will work perfectly for those squares as well! You could even start with a 16 inch or 17 inch square and use one of these patterns to make a king size quilt. It just takes 36 squares of any size to make any or all of these quilts. This book contains instructions to make 238 quilts! All of the instructions are written for beginners. This book offers beginning quilters several benefits. The quilts are all made up of basic blocks. The fabric in the precut, prepackaged fabric bundles all match. The book describes several methods for organizing scrap quilts. Beginning quilters are introduced to the creative process of quilting. However, these quilts are not just for beginners. Experienced quilters can enjoy making a quick project as a gift or to experiment with new colors. This book takes quilters through four steps of basic quiltmaking. Step 1: Choose Your Pattern. Step 2: Organize Your Fabrics. Step 3: Sew Your Blocks Together. Step 4: Layout and Sew Your Quilt. Going through these steps involves quilters with the entire process of quilt making in a fun, simple way.Big Block Quilts contains patterns for 238 quilts with full color pictures of 21 of these patterns. See how similar patterns look in different colors, and see how the same fabrics look in different patterns. This book contains hundreds of ideas for using charm packs, layer cakes, sweet 16s, spoonfuls, fat quarters, and your personal stash!

Nickel Quilts: Great Designs from 5 Inch Scraps [Paperback] Review

Nickel Quilts: Great Designs from 5 Inch Scraps [Paperback]If you are like me, you have fabric pieces of all sizes, from tiny scraps to major yardage, stashed on shelves and in boxes and drawers all over your house. This book is perfect for people like us. The quilts are beautiful and surprisingly simple to construct, for the most part. The authors devote the first part of the book to a series of techniques for converting 5" squares into checkerboard blocks, half-square triangle blocks, quarter-square triangle blocks, and "picket fences" as efficiently as possible. These directions are very complete and well explained. They also suggest buying a little extra fabric each time you shop, and ctting off a five-inch strip right away. Plus they give great instructions on how to hold a 5-inch square swap, including how to keep track of everybody's contributions.
Then, in the second part, they give directions for a series of quilts from very easy to a little more complicated (though none of them are actually difficult). Even the easiest quilts are surprisingly complex-looking, and all of them are designed to be made in three sizes. The color scheme of most of the quilts shown is medium-to-dark traditional prints on cream, but there is no reason not to choose a completely different scheme. (I am thinking about oversize splashy prints on a black-and-white background for one of the simpler quilts, for example, or bright plaids on batik.) Now all I have to do is start cutting...

Big-Block Quilts by Magic: 30 Projects from Squares & Rectangles Features Easy & Accurate Diamond-Free(r) Technique 14 Bonus Quilting Designs [Paperback] Review

Big-Block Quilts by Magic: 30 Projects from Squares & Rectangles Features Easy & Accurate Diamond-Free(r) Technique 14 Bonus Quilting Designs [Paperback]Big-Block Magic is recently published, 2006, and comes at a great time.Just when my creative thoughts were wondering what to do for lap and king sized quilts, Ms. Johnson-Srebro provides the answer. This book gives seven patterns and each pattern has three sizes provided therein - lap, wall and queen/king sized!

Along with the "how to read" the charts section, each quilt pattern has a "No-Fail" tip with it.The Basics section is a good review for the long-time quilter or a good place to start for the newbie. In this section, there are also "No-fail" tips along with "My Favorite Things".I love this as you never have too many tips and even if you new the tip, it may present a slightly different approach and give you a new idea. And once you have created your lap, wall or queen/king quilt, each pattern has two quilting designs for you to give your quilt the final touch.

Each pattern has easy to follow graphics of each step needed to create the quilt. It is all color-coordinated--the yardage and cutting charts to the actual sewing steps so you know exactly what piece goes where.

There is even a pillowcase pattern in standard, queen and king and an accent pillow pattern with NO ZIPPER NEEDED to provide your quilt a coordinated extra. This is a very simple but elegant accent pillow and one that everyone should try at least one.Who knows? You may want to make several more once you see how easy it is to make accent pillows.

The final pages have a photo gallery and the very last page is a resource listing and information about the stencils. You get all of this for a very reasonable price. This is one book that should be in every quilter's collection.

Stash Buster Quilts: 14 Time-saving Designs to Use Up Fabric Scraps [Paperback] Review

Stash Buster Quilts: 14 Time-saving Designs to Use Up Fabric Scraps [Paperback]My first response when thumbing through this book wasn't very positive.I saw only one quilt I thought I might make. However, over several days, I found myself thumbing through the book over and over again and becoming very excited about making a dent in my fabric stash with several of the patterns.

Her instructions are so very good, I've moved this book from the bookshelf to my sewing table and expect I will be using it until the pages become dog-eared and fall out of the book.

Having been a quilter for almost 40 years, my fabric stash is shamefully large.I'll probably never really bust itbut this book is helping me put quite a dandy dent in it and I'm having a great time doing it.

Her patterns adapt equally well using new bold fabric colors and older vintage fabrics left over from quilts made decades ago.
