Copy Cat Quilts (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

I was excited when I found COPY CAT QUILTS.As a cat lover, I couldn't wait to see all the patterns for cat quilts Ms. Navarro put in her book.Alas, I was disappointed.There were really only two patterns.True, there are six different projects but only the two different cat patterns.I don't need a book to tell me that I can take four blocks and make a pillow instead of a quilt or decrease the size of the "cat" to make a smaller quilt.

With that said, I do LOVE the cat pattern that she has designed.It even comes with a stuffed ball at the feet of each cat.I would be "lazy" and stuff a yo-yo rather than go through the trouble of sewing two circles, turning and stuffing.After all, the opening of the yo-yo will be placed faced down and the ball sewn around to attach it to the quilt.

I am glad to see the cat is all pieced, not paper pieced and while there are a lot of pieces to make each cat, he does turn out very cute.Embroidery is used to complete his face so you can make your cats happy, sad or mischievous.The projects all have material and cutting lists and instructions on how to put the blocks together.Ms. Covey has left the quilting pattern to finish the quilt up to you.

The Feline Dolls cat has the template included in the book which is the second pattern I referred to earlier.If you are a quilter that thinks "outside the box", then this book might be a bit disappointing. But if you are the type of quilter that needs detailed instructions to make each and every item you quilt, then this book will give you six wonderful projects to work on.

If you want to learn to date fabrics found in quilts and cotton clothing, then this book is a must have.MAKING HISTORY Quilts and Fabrics covers the topics in the same detail and stylistic manner of America's Printed Fabrics, for the years 1890 to 1970. With this book, Barbara Brackman essentially finishes her update of Clues in the Calico, (1989).

If I were to use one word to describe the book's text, it is concise.She gives us a great deal of meaty information by combining period fabrics used for clothing, interiors furnishings, and quilts with interior and architectural design schools and wraps them into a synopses of their influence on patterned fabric's scale, color, weave and print.

Large swatches of original fabrics and reproduction prints are featured in exacting color photographs. Smaller quilt pictures show vintage ones. What is great, especially for someone new to dating fabrics, is that she goes back to the beginning dye history of a color and brings it forward to the focus of the years the chapter covers.

Barbara writes that her personal mission when doing research for this book was the discovery of why the look of quilts changed so much in the early 20th century, compared to the years before it. This book is a very interesting read as it draws from the greater field of textiles and interior design, with a wider focus than reproduction and antique fabrics and quilts.

Time to Quilt not only shows you how to plan a quilt retreat with your quilting friends, but offers resourceful solutions to make more time to quilt at home without feeling guilty. I followed the books advise and scheduled time for my quilting by putting it on the calendar, planning ahead to have the kids and husband busy with their own activities out of the house. Then I indulged on my pleasurable project in good conscience.
Time to Quilt has a wide variety of quilt designs and projects from large to small, with suggestions on what to do with leftover blocks too! My favorite is the playful ice skate table runner as the quilting makes a "figure 8". Can't wait to make the footwarmer soon.
Everything about the book is beautiful: the photography, graphics, friendly writing style. The book has a positive, open feeling to it. Really clear and easy to follow instructions with good illustrations. Terrific tips on basic skills as well as how to put a group quilt together when blocks are not quite the same size.
The book has recipes peppered throughtout. My favorites are the mix-in cookies and Scrapsoup. For the Pollo con Salsa recipe, you don't even need to defrost the chicken. It was so easy, it gave me more time to quilt!

Simple Comforts: 12 Cozy Lap Quilts [Paperback] Review

Kim Diehl presents us with one more fine book in her "Simple" series.I already own "Simple Seasons", so I snapped up the new "Simple Comforts" as soon as I saw it.

These "Simple" books tend toward traditional patterns done in strong colorations with just the right mix of color and contrast, and not TOO much applique.Ms. Diehl's style also lends itself very well to scrappyness, and "Simple Comforts" is a wonderful resource to inspire you to finally deal with those scraps.

The Table of Contents page provides thumbnail photos of each of the 12 quilt patterns, which is a most helpful editing technique that I wish all publishers would utilize.You instantly see the full range Diehl's colorful interpretation of traditional patterns.

Of course, you can make these quilts using really modern/mod fabrics, and there is one particular quilt - "Checkerberry Bliss" - that is a great exercise in contrast in black and light greens.My favorite is "Twilight Hopscotch", a really lovely star/chain variation in tone-on-tone greens on neutral; I am thinking of making this one first to use as a shower curtain.

Scattered throughout the book are Diehl's "Pin Points", which are helpful insets which offer handy technique tips.Also worth noting: each pattern includes directional arrows for "proper" seam pressing, which I rely on to help me best-match pieced seams.

I look forward to more "Simple" books from Kim Diehl; whether this is your first of her books or not, I think this one will inspire those of us who prefer colorful yet still largely traditional patterns."Simply" a winner!!

I am a hopelessly hooked quilter and this is a WONDERFUL book. The many different settings are incredible, and although they look complex, like any really good quilting book, the break-down explanation makes you want to say, "why didn't I see that...." These Quilts are indeed beautiful. But a beginner should beware. This is not a quick or easy quilt. Indeed a masterpiece. It is assumed that you have artist and color skills that are quite advanced. If you build as you go, as Ricky suggests a less experienced person might find himself mired in uncertainty. It is excellent for more experienced quilters looking for a challenge, or a very ambitious beginner. I found it facinating to see the steps involved and colors used. Ricky has amazing skills!

Classic Quilts With Precise Foundation Piecing [Paperback] Review

I have enjoyed working with this book. The paper foundations included are much easier to work with than if they were just printed on the book's pages. I did the Double Wedding Ring and the results were teriffic! This is paper piecing for people who are committed to doing traditional work with new methods, and it makes sense to combine the techniques. I have recommended it to my advanced students. Not for beginners! I only wish I hadn't forgotten who I loaned this book to, as now I have to buy another copy!

Let me tell you everything this book is about, in just one sentence:Instead of sewing art quilts with a needle and thread, you can use fast2fuse or WonderUnder to hot fuse dyed fabric cut-outs onto your base cloth.There, that's it.That is really all this book has to say!

It is very product specific (she uses brand names only, not general temrs) and it's also very short at 63 pages.The author also invents her own cutesey terms like "shape shifting" and "random acts of fusing" when a more explanatory, technical term would have made her instructions much more clear.Since the one and only technique in this book (as I stated in the paragraph above) is quite short and uncomplicated, the rest of the book is full of the author's own fused art quilts and the stories behind them.She also tells you, step by step, how she made them.To me, this is unnessecary because it's obvious how she made them.She cut some shapes out of cloth and fused them onto her base fabric with fusible web...and that's it!That's the only technique explained in this book, and in my opinion you really don't need a book to tell you how to do that.

There isn't even any good info on composition or colors in this book.I'm afraid it was quite disappointing to me.

Beautiful Foundation-Pieced Quilt Blocks [Paperback] Review

Hiney's book has absolutely beautiful samples of foundation-pieced blocks that I have not found anywhere else. The quilt and wall-hanging examples that are in the book are beautifully done, and most could easily be done bysomeone who has had some experience foundation piecing. However, for thosepeople who like to pick a quilt out of a book and make it exactly, this mayor may not be the book for you. About a third to half of the blocks areonly shown in singles (not in an actual quilt), so you may have toexperiment a bit with them in order to find how they will look whenassembled. If you are a quilter who likes to make up her own designs, butneeds a little help designing the basic blocks, this book is a must have!

Amish Patterns for Machine Quilting (Dover Needlework Series) [Paperback] Review

A useful tool for the machine quilting library. There are about 50 templates including very basic, simple designs, plus flowers (lots and lots of them), baskets, stars, leaves, hearts, and combinations. Each templateis shown on one page along with a diagram showing arrows of how to sew thedesign with only one starting point. Some designs do require multiplestarting points but many are single-line (although much turning) designs.Some corner designs are shown and some attention is given to patterns thatturn a corner. About half the patterns are the kind that might be used in aquilt block (not continuous border-type designs), such as tulips, stars, orbaskets. I was looking more for new continuous-line, border-type patternsand did not see much new in that area. One page provides a detailed diagramshowing how to quilt feathers. Being more of a beginner-level, self-taughtquilter, the feathers always looked too difficult to me. But now I seeclearly how to proceed and might actually try this design!

I bought this book because I saw it online and reviewed some of the pages beforehand.One particular quilt in the book caught my eye...I had the "perfect" fabrics in mind for it.The title of the quilt I made was "Star Bright" on page 24.A traditional looking "cockeyed" star.I used Bali/batik fabrics with a dark background fabric.I think mine looks better than the one in the book!This was an inspirational book--sparked my creativity and gave me the chance to use fabrics I wouldn't normally use.Directions were well written (unlike some quilt books!)The quilt I made was only my second one ever!If you have never made an "ART" quilt and would like to make something really cool, fresh, and hip...Get this book.

Bella Bella Quilts: Stunning Designs from Italian Mosaics [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

Firstly, this book is probably not for the novice quilter--there are some easier designs, and suggestions for simplifying patterns, but the directions do assume a general knowledge of the craft.

However, there's a lot that any quilter can learn from this book; it's filled with beautiful quilts with interesting designs taken from Italian mosaics.In fact, it's also loaded with pictures of the original mosaics that inspired the quiltds, and a short history lesson on the origin of the mosaic patterns.

Aside from the inspiration of just paging through looking at pretty pictures, I found a lot to admire in the thought Norah McMeeking obviously put into this book.Each section begins with a nice photo of the quilt and then some helpful design suggestions--ways to vary the pattern and make it your own.There's also several line drawings of possible design/color variations to help you visualize your options.Then comes a list of fabric requirements and directions, including illustrations of any special/new techniques and lastly, suggestions for quilting methods that would look good.All the templates and foundations are presented in a pullout section at the end of the book, which is so much handier than trying to trace them off of book pages.

All in all, this a well conceived and well executed quilt book.In all likelihood I won't attempt to recreate one of these quilts, but I do see myself using bits and pieces in my own quilts.It's a good book to add to my reference library.

This book by Claudia Clark Myers is the best quilt and design book to come down the pike in a very long time.I have far too many books in my quilt library, and had sworn to downsize.I realized that many of the new books on the market are repeats of what I already have.I have always admired Ms. Myers work, and was excited to see that she had written a book.

I was definitely NOT disappointed. This book is fresh, exciting, and packed with beautiful pictures and galleries, and the instructions and tips are superb.Claudia comes from a background of costume designing, and it shows in her work and instruction. Her method is paper piecing, enabling the quilter to obtain perfect results. Even though it has 16 projects, it isn't merely a pattern book.It encourages the quilter to explore her/his own style and design sensibility.It is loaded with ideas and inspiration.I can say that it truly is a cut above most of the new quilt books I am seeing on the market today.

Ms. Goldsmith and Ms. Jenkins have done it again!If you've enjoyed their previous books about quilting and applique, you'll enjoy this one too!There are a variety of designs; just looking at them gives me ideas for many different types of quilts everything from the usual bright, sparkly, fun Piece O' Cake color ways to romantic, folk, traditional and contemporary.

Most of the designs in this book have curved piecing, which the authors give clear and concise directions to help you.Many of the patterns in the book also have paper piecing sections.Though, previous knowledge of either Piece O' Cake designs or previous knowledge of paper piecing/curves may be helpful they are not a prerequisite.An adventurous beginner could easily dive right into any of the patterns without difficulty.The authors have excellent directions for all of the various techniques involved in all of the quilts in the book.

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves Piece O' Cake designs, anyone interested in curved piecing, applique, paper piecing, or anyone with a sense of adventure. A+

Simple Seasons: Stunning Quilts and Savory Recipes (That Patchwork Place) [Paperback] Review

I wrote a review recently about SIMPLE SEASON RECIPE BOX by Ms. Diehl.Now I have the book that goes with that box.(I still like my idea of using the box to cross-reference my quilt patterns as I don't like cooking as much as I LOVE quilting!).My point is that the book has recipes to put in the box as well as wonderful quilt patterns.

The book starts with a sixteen page section on quilting basics and fabric selection.Ms. Diehl gives lots of tips for making your quilt easier.There are graphics to help visualize what is explained.The book is divided into the Seasons with three or four quilts per Season and then recipes to go with each Season as well.

The quilts run from lap to table runners to bed to doll and of course, wall hangings so there are a wide variety of project sizes.The techniques include piecing, yo-yo's and appliqué.Each project begins with a paragraph about the project.Then a materials list is provided with a cutting list following that.Next are the assembly instructions.This includes lots of graphics to demonstrate the sewing instructions.Finally, adding the borders and suggestions on finishing --- how to quilt --- are given.Templates are included.

The recipes are the kind that make me think of grandma and home cooking.Quick Cherry Crisp-- yummmmmmy - homemade rolls, split pea soup just to name a few.All good eating and they go perfectly with quilts.

The final page holds three paragraphs about Ms. Diehl.I always like to learn about the designers and how they got where they are today.All in all, this is a great book for all year round.Food and quilts --- what could be a better combination?
